by MarineTLChapter 85: Are You Blaming Me?
At 11:30 AM, a black Mercedes-Benz pulled up beneath the residential building where the Han family lived.
Han Xinyan stepped out of the car first, holding Shen Jiayue. Shen Fei followed closely behind.
“Hey, look! Isn’t that old Han’s daughter? And behind her, isn’t that gambling-addict husband of hers? Tsk, they’ve made it—driving a luxury car now!”
“I recognize that car. It’s quite popular! My son said he’d have to save several years’ salary to afford one.”
“Exactly! If they really had that much money, wouldn’t he have gambled it all away already? Buying a car? Dream on! If that gambler could afford a car, wouldn’t the Han family be flaunting it by now?”
“Did you hear? Zhang Xiulian told me the other day that once her daughter divorces, she’s going to marry her off to some government official!”
“Tsk, tsk. That poor girl.”
Amidst the chatter, the family of three arrived at the Han family’s door.
The moment they entered, Han Lixin hurried over.
“Sis, you’re finally here!” Han Lixin grinned at Han Xinyan and Shen Jiayue. “Yueyue, come here, Uncle has candy for you!”
As soon as he picked up Shen Jiayue, his smile froze. He had seen Shen Fei following behind.
“Why the hell are you here?” Han Lixin barked, his expression darkening.
“Lixin, I…” Han Xinyan tried to interject, but Han Lixin cut her off.
“Sis, I didn’t invite this bastard!”
His voice was full of anger and resentment. Shen Fei’s very presence enraged him. Back when Han Xinyan insisted on marrying Shen Fei, Han Lixin had even stolen the family’s household registration book for her.
If he hadn’t helped back then, his sister wouldn’t have ended up in such a miserable state.
“Lixin, this time Shen Fei has really changed!” Han Xinyan defended him.
“Uncle, don’t be mean to Daddy. If you’re mean, I won’t like you anymore!” Little Jiayue’s face scrunched up in protest.
“Sis, do you even believe what you’re saying? You know better than I do what kind of person Shen Fei is. Changed? Has he changed into a bigger coward or an even worse monster?” Han Lixin’s voice trembled with frustration.
“I should never have helped this bastard back then! Otherwise, you wouldn’t have suffered abuse. You’d be living a good life now, not enduring all this!”
Han Lixin’s eyes reddened with anger as he spoke. He hated seeing his sister suffer.
“Lixin, just trust me one more time. If Shen Fei treats me badly again, I’ll divorce him immediately!” Han Xinyan promised.
“Sis! How many chances have you given him? I can’t even count them on both hands!” Han Lixin exclaimed, his tone filled with exasperation.
Han Xinyan smiled bitterly. “Just give Shen Fei one more chance.”
Han Lixin turned his glare to Shen Fei, his anger now focused entirely on him.
“Shen Fei, I don’t care about your excuses. Everything my sister has suffered is because of you! If you’re really a man, prove it with your actions!”
He then added harshly, “If you dare hurt my sister again, I’ll kill you, even if it means going to jail!”
Shen Fei simply nodded, unable to argue. He knew this was his own doing.
At that moment, Zhang Xiulian rushed out of the kitchen.
“Lixin, has Lili arrived? Why don’t you call her and ask when—”
She stopped mid-sentence as her eyes fell on Han Xinyan and Shen Fei. She had initially intended to yell at the trio but then remembered the 500,000 Shen Fei had given her.
Suppressing her anger, she glared at them coldly and mocked, “Oh, it’s our favorite freeloaders. Great timing! You didn’t come earlier or later, but right when the food’s ready. Are we your servants now?”
Han Xinyan ignored her mother’s sarcasm, sitting silently on the sofa with Jiayue and Shen Fei.
She had become indifferent to her mother’s ridicule. After witnessing her parents’ greed in the village and how quickly they changed after getting money, she had lost all hope in them.
“Mom, what are you saying? I invited my sister here, and I told her to come at this time. You’ve been fussing about for hours, but Lili isn’t even here yet. Why don’t you blame her instead?” Han Lixin retorted.
“You brat! Call Lili now!” Zhang Xiulian snapped, eager to change the subject.
“I already did. She’s on her way,” Han Lixin replied irritably.
Hearing this, Zhang Xiulian smiled and bustled back into the kitchen. “I’ll bring out the food.”
At that moment, the door opened.
Before the person even entered, an overwhelming wave of cheap perfume filled the room.
A woman walked in, her face caked with heavy makeup and her outfit a knock-off designer brand. Her expression carried a haughty arrogance. As she passed Shen Fei’s family, she let out a disdainful snort.
“Lili! Come, the food’s just ready!” Zhang Xiulian greeted her enthusiastically, her face lighting up with joy.
Zhang Xiulian adored Lili. She thought Lili was beautiful, had a good job, and marrying her into the family would bring great pride.
“Lili, where are your parents?” Han Jian asked, noticing they hadn’t come.
“Oh, they’re busy today and couldn’t make it,” Lili replied indifferently.
“What? Why didn’t you say so earlier? My parents wouldn’t have had to go through all this trouble!” Han Lixin said, his voice tense.
“Are you blaming me? I didn’t ask your parents to do this!” Lili snapped sharply.
Han Lixin immediately fell silent, his earlier bravado gone.
Seeing this, Zhang Xiulian quickly stepped in to smooth things over. “Oh, it’s fine! Next time we can gather again. Lili, come and eat!”
As they chatted and laughed, Zhang Xiulian and Han Jian completely ignored Shen Fei’s family.
Still, Shen Fei casually sat at the table, dragging Han Xinyan and Jiayue along with him. Ignoring the angry stares from Zhang Xiulian and Han Jian, he calmly began eating and even served food to Han Xinyan and Jiayue.
This scene seemed to irk Lili greatly.
If she hadn’t been there, Zhang Xiulian and Han Jian likely would have thrown Shen Fei out immediately.
“Lili, you and Lixin have been together for so long. When do you plan to settle down?” Zhang Xiulian asked, her tone overly eager.
Lili put down her chopsticks and replied directly, “Let’s be straightforward. After discussing with my parents, we’ve decided: 200,000 yuan for the betrothal gift, a 110-square-meter apartment with a down payment in the city where I work, and a car—an Audi worth around 300,000 will do.”
