    Chapter 18: Disaster Route

“Why did it stare for two extra seconds when my dad acknowledged ownership?” Yan Yu asked.

“Wasn’t this ox assigned by that guy earlier? The Bull Demon King has Level 1 authority, Princess Iron Fan and Red Boy have secondary authority. When commands conflict, it follows the highest authority.”

The middle-aged man was so excited he nearly went straight to butcher the ox, but in the end, rationality prevailed. Every time the platform opened, the time was precious and couldn’t be wasted.

“Then what’s your codename?” Yan Yu asked out of pure curiosity.

    “Hongjun!”

    Alright, you win!

“If I want to increase my authority, what should I do?”

“You can assign secondary authority. Just tell it, ‘That’s the Bull Demon King’s mother, that’s Princess Iron Fan’s brother, that’s Red Boy’s younger sibling,’ and so on.

But honestly, it’s best to keep this ox for your own use. Just tell others it’s not used to strangers, so they can’t command it. It’s safer that way,” he kindly advised.

Yan Yu nodded seriously. That was definitely something to be mindful of.

“Uncle, do you have any toilet paper to trade?” Yan Yu asked without a shred of embarrassment. Why be shy about life’s necessities?

“Ahem! Well, little sis, I use smart toilets here—very high-tech—so I don’t need that stuff. It’s not like there’s none for sale, but definitely not in my Sector 87. I live in the lowest-class area, basically a slum.

Wait for the next two unlucky ones. Maybe you can trade with them.

Oh, by the way, do you want to trade for some nutrient solution? Essential for home and travel! One bottle has all the nutrition you need, perfect for disaster survival. What do you think? Little sis, I see you still have some pork skin jelly, hehe!”

“No rush on that. Uncle, you seem to know a lot—can you tell me how to get the best deals on the platform?”

“I can give you some advice, but you’ll have to trade me that pork skin jelly.”

“Uncle, if I give it to you, what will I do later? I won’t have anything left! How about you give me some pointers first? If I learn how this works, I can get even more good food for you in the future.”

He thought about it and found the reasoning sound. His store inventory wasn’t even comparable to hers.

“Just test each item. If a number appears, it means you can sell it.

As for whether it’s a good deal, I don’t know your local prices. Over here, things are pretty cheap.

Generally speaking, official marketplace items rarely result in losses, but they come in small portions. What’s displayed is exactly what you get—no extra packaging.

So when you buy, make sure to have something ready to store it in.”

“I put an egg on the platform, and it shows ‘1.’”

“Just assume it’s 1 unit of currency. If you only sell and don’t buy, your balance will keep accumulating.”

    “But I saw…”

Eggs on the marketplace were priced at only 0.5. What was going on?

Before Yan Yu could finish speaking, the screen switched back.

Instead of rushing to the blinking ‘Free Market’ option, she tapped on the cheapest egg.

    【Would you like to purchase?】

    【Yes】 【No】

    Yes!

A pristine white egg appeared on the ground.

    【Current Balance: 0.5】

“I thought 0.5 was the price for a whole basket of eggs. Turns out it’s just one,” Yan Yu lamented.

If it were a whole basket, she would’ve struck gold—unlimited eggs!

“You should’ve said something first. Good thing it’s just an egg—no harm done. But if it were rice or flour, spilling it would be such a waste,” Li Xuemei said, bringing over the sun-dried blanket and laying it on the floor.

“This will have to do for now. Better than putting things directly on the ground.”

Yan Yu picked up the egg and put it back into the storage grid.

    Li Xuemei: …

    【Current Balance: 1】

“Why, though? They’re both eggs. Why are marketplace eggs cheaper?” Yan Yu grumbled, still unwilling to give up on exploiting the official marketplace loopholes.

Yan Lao’er, her father, shared her mindset and sighed, “Not a single crack to take advantage of!”

Li Xuemei chuckled helplessly. “You two, enough already. The marketplace has already helped us so much.”

“Aha!” Yan Lao’er smacked his thigh. “Ours are real free-range eggs! That one must be from a factory farm, which is why it’s cheaper.”

Yan Yu thought about it. No flaws in that logic.

She looked at her father with admiration. “Dad, you really know your stuff!”

“Haha, of course! I go to the market and supermarket all the time,” Yan Lao’er said smugly. This was what it meant to run a household—handling everything inside and out.

“Dad, when you brought stuff back earlier, did Uncle see?”

“Nope. Your uncle and big brother were too busy organizing their books.”

“Then, Dad, sneak back a handful of brown rice and a few chunks of coarse salt.”

“Got it!” Yan Lao’er agreed and was about to head out.

But his wife stopped him. “Bring those two big iron wheels inside too. I don’t feel safe leaving them outside.”

Yan Yu opened the ‘Free Market.’

    Time for her second session.

Not gonna lie, it was just like opening a blind box—kinda exciting!

The screen flickered, revealing a drenched woman.

“Huh? A new little sister,” the woman said, leaning closer. “Ancient era setting?”

Yan Yu mimicked the punk uncle’s summary method—it seemed to help the other party understand her situation faster.

“Hello, sis. I’m a transmigrator in a fictional ancient dynasty. We’re in the middle of a drought, and my family is poor.

Our food and supplies are similar to ancient times here. This is my first time using the platform, and I still don’t fully understand how it works. Right now, I really need toilet paper.”

“Hehe, you’re learning fast, little sis. I’m also a newcomer—this is my second time accessing the platform.

You should see my category—I’m a transmigrator too, disaster route.”

“Last session, I didn’t connect with anyone. Good thing I met you this time.”

“I do have toilet paper… but…” She turned and rummaged through her belongings before pulling out a soggy lump. Embarrassed, she said, “This is what I’ve got.”

    Yan Yu: …

If you hadn’t told me, I wouldn’t have recognized it at all.

“Sis, how long has it been raining there?”

“A few months now. Feels like the sky has a hole in it.

I’m in a coastal city, so the flooding is even worse.

What I need most is a boat—an inflatable raft or something. I want to get inland, where conditions might be better.”

    Months of rain…

Yan Yu: Disaster route is terrifying!

“Then why didn’t you match with anyone last time?”

“Maybe the other person’s surroundings weren’t safe? Or they didn’t have anything to trade?” the woman speculated.

Yan Yu figured it was probably the former. Even if someone had nothing to trade, they’d at least be curious enough to check out the other side.

“Besides a boat, I need warm clothing, medicine, and hot food.” The woman explained further, “Our power and communication networks are completely down. Most people are staying in high-rise buildings. There used to be relief efforts, but they’ve almost disappeared.

The rain never stops, and fire-starting tools are running out. Many people can’t take it anymore and are getting sick…”
