Chapter 19: The Sister with Plenty of Balance

Yan Yu and Li Xuemei whispered a few words to each other. Yan Yu then said, “I do have clothes, but they’re in ancient styles. I don’t know if you’ll be comfortable wearing them. As for medicine… even if I trade it to you, you probably won’t be able to prepare it, since they’re all raw herbs. But food isn’t an issue—I still have some leftover bone broth at home. It won’t take long to heat up.”

“You have bone broth? That’s great! I haven’t had hot soup in ages.

Water is also very precious. Even though it’s been raining outside constantly, that water isn’t drinkable…

We can only drink bottled or barreled water. If it weren’t for being able to buy water and food on the platform, I wouldn’t have lasted this long…”

Li Xuemei sorted through her clothes. Winter coats weren’t needed for now, so she could trade them.

After thinking for a moment, she said to Yan Yu, “Xiao Yu, ask her what she has in her marketplace.”

Yan Yu did as she was told, and the woman on the other side answered honestly:

“Umbrellas, raincoats, rain boots, swim rings.

Bottled water, milk, eight-treasure porridge, sausages, canned fish, luncheon meat.

    Hand warmers, plastic bags.”

Yan Yu couldn’t help but salivate.

It was completely different from her side.

So, in disaster scenarios with modern settings, instant foods were stocked instead of raw ingredients…

But what was up with the plastic bags?

“Why do you have plastic bags?” Yan Yu asked curiously.

“They’re all large black plastic bags. They can hold a lot, are moisture-proof, and keep others from seeing what’s inside. Very practical.” The woman chuckled and added, “The platform also buys back various items. The system sells them for 0.2 each but buys them back for 0.01. You might laugh, but plastic bags are what I sell the most.”

    Yan Yu: …

Respect. Even in such dire circumstances, this sister was still contributing to environmental protection!

“I saw an outdoor charcoal water boiler among your supplies. What’s it like?”

The woman turned around to rummage through her things and pulled out a double-handled charcoal burner from a black plastic bag, along with a ceramic kettle.

“This is it. See if it’s useful to you?”

    Yan Yu’s eyes lit up.

She had expected just the charcoal burner, but there was even a ceramic kettle.

    That was really convenient.

The woman thought for a moment, then turned around again, digging out a clay pot.

“I traded for this before. Back then, the situation wasn’t as bad, and we could still find things to burn, like charcoal and alcohol blocks. The small pot is for boiling water, the large pot for making porridge or noodles, and it could even dry out wet clothes and blankets. But now… I can’t use it anymore.”

Summoning her courage, she said, “If possible, I’d like to trade for your light cotton coat and that blanket on the ground.”

She had set her sights on that blanket the moment she saw it. But in an ancient setting, a cotton quilt was incredibly valuable. Without something of equal worth, she felt bad even bringing it up.

Still, she wanted it so badly!

Her own blanket had been stolen. In such a damp environment, just two nights without proper cover had already left her feeling unwell. If this continued, she would get sick.

“If I trade it to you, won’t you need it later? What if the platform starts selling charcoal?” Yan Yu asked while discussing with Li Xuemei.

“I still have a stainless steel one,” the woman replied. “And these items are still fairly easy to trade for now.”

Li Xuemei felt it was a bit of a loss. Forget feeling sorry for the woman on the other side—they themselves were struggling too.

Yan Yu agreed with her mother’s reasoning and continued scrolling through the supply list. She stopped at a certain point and said,

“Sis, you want bone broth, a cotton coat, and a blanket. But that’s not enough for a trade. The last guy told me we have to follow the platform’s exchange rules, or the transaction won’t go through.

I see you have a bucket of corn oil and a can of milk powder. If you add those in, I’ll ask my dad to make dough drops to go with the bone broth, and even add an egg. How about that?”

Dough drop soup? With an egg?!

    Slurp!

The woman hesitated only for a moment before pulling out a 4-liter container of corn oil and a can of infant stage-3 formula, agreeing to the trade.

Yaner’s second brother snuck in like a thief, hauling in two large iron wheels. Before he even had time to catch his breath, he was handed an egg—purchased with 0.5 of Yan Yu’s hard-earned balance—and sent off to make dough drop soup.

The moment he heard it was in exchange for milk powder, he wiped his face and bolted to the kitchen.

If it weren’t for the milk powder, Yan Yu wouldn’t have paid such a high price or taken such a big risk.

Warming up bone broth in the middle of the night could be explained as preventing it from spoiling.

But dough drop soup? That would have to be blamed on her innocent, hungry little siblings…

“Sis, aside from plastic bags, what else have you sold on the platform?” Yan Yu wanted to understand more about it—not just her own, but others’ as well.

Since everyone’s platform was different, she needed to consider not just what she could obtain from the other world but also what would be newly stocked in their store.

“The platform buys almost everything, as long as it’s clean. It doesn’t matter if it’s new or used—just as long as it’s clean,” the woman explained. “For example, clothes can be wet, worn, or stained, but if they’re contaminated with bacteria, the platform won’t accept them.”

She had taken a long time to figure out this pattern.

And it was why she chose to stay away from people and live alone.

Too many people were sick. In the same environment, it was hard not to get infected.

“It also buys tools of all kinds, as long as they aren’t water-damaged or completely ruined.”

Yan Yu thought it over, her eyes widening. “Then don’t you have a ton of balance?”

The woman gave a sheepish smile and nodded slightly. “I’ve sold quite a lot, but I later realized the platform only ensures survival. It’s in the free market where I can trade for things I actually want. So now, I hold onto anything I can, just in case someone wants to trade.”

“The things on the store shelves—can they be traded too?” Yan Yu asked.

The woman blinked in surprise. “Oh! You’re right!”

Seizing the moment, Yan Yu pitched, “Sis, look at this pork jelly my dad made—it’s delicious! The last guy wanted it, but I couldn’t bear to trade it to him. Imagine eating pork jelly while sipping dough drop soup—doesn’t that sound amazing?!

All it takes is one can of luncheon meat, and the pork jelly is yours.”

The woman chuckled and nodded. “Alright, let’s trade.”

Yan Yu’s screen instantly switched to the platform interface.

The woman must have exited the chat to purchase luncheon meat.

Holding her basin of pork jelly, Yan Yu happily waited.

Then, she saw a notification flash in the free market.

She clicked in and saw the woman holding a can of luncheon meat.

Unlike what she and the old man had gotten, this luncheon meat still had its original packaging.

    Both confirmed the trade.

Yan Yu’s basin of pork jelly vanished, replaced by a neatly packaged can of luncheon meat.

The woman, clearly experienced, had prepared a stainless steel basin in advance, just the right size for the pork jelly.

She shook the now-empty packaging and said, “The platform buys these back too, for 0.5 each.”

Yan Yu: That’s worth more than an egg.

Disasters were harsh, but since their backgrounds were similar, the platform’s regulations weren’t too strict—like not bothering to package things.

As long as it opened every two weeks, and they secured enough food and water, they really could avoid going hungry.
