Chapter 5: Pregnant with a Little One

In the book, Yan Huai’an not only racked up gambling debts and nearly squandered the family’s entire fortune, but even after the family split, he refused to change his ways—instead, he became even worse.

The little bit of silver Old Yan gave him as part of the division was all gambled away. Worse yet, when Da Ya, Old Yan’s daughter, was assaulted, he had a chance to stop it. But because he resented his older brother, he chose to ignore it, leading to the later tragedy.

After what happened, as the only female elder in the immediate family, Madam Li should have gone to console Da Ya. Perhaps Da Ya wouldn’t have ended up hanging herself. But Yan Huai’an wouldn’t allow it. In a drunken rage, he even hit Madam Li—causing her to lose her child.

    Yes, she had a miscarriage!

Yan Yu shuddered violently. She couldn’t afford to think about anything else and sprinted straight to her room.

At this moment, Li Xuemei was standing on a cabinet, holding a bamboo pole, swiping at the rafters.

“Stop moving!” Yan Yu broke into a cold sweat. Seeing Li Xuemei turn to look at her in surprise, she softened her voice and coaxed, “Mother, come down first.”

Li Xuemei stubbornly swiped the bamboo pole twice more. Seeing that there was indeed nothing up there, she propped herself on the pole, sat down, and shifted her position to jump down.

The cabinet wasn’t high. Whether climbing up or jumping down, it was easy.

But Yan Yu didn’t dare let her jump down. If she really was pregnant, what if something happened? Better safe than sorry!

“Mother, sit down properly and listen to me,” Yan Yu ran over. Her small arms could only reach her mother’s calves.

Li Xuemei was exhausted. She simply sat back down. Suddenly, her eyes lit up, and she asked excitedly, “My good girl, did you find something?”

Without hesitation, Yan Yu hugged her mother’s legs, looked up, and grinned. Her eyes curved into crescents, twinkling like stars.

“We have a system now! Hahaha!”

    “What?”

    “Huh?”

Li Xuemei and Yan Huai’an, who had just pushed the door open, asked at the same time.

Yan Yu quickly explained how the support trading platform of the Xia Kingdom had suddenly appeared, along with the fact that they were now living inside a book.

Seeing the two of them still confused, she even used the bamboo pole to draw the shape of the glowing screen on the ground.

After a long moment, the couple exchanged looks.

Li Xuemei was the first to react. She immediately covered her stomach.

Her voice trembled as she asked, “So I’m really… pregnant?”

She didn’t feel anything at all. Was this real?

Had they really transmigrated into a book? Was she really pregnant? Was the platform real?

Or was this just an illusion created by her daughter’s so-called system?

Yan Huai’an was beyond excited. “Oh my dear, slow down. Here, let me help you down. Move little by little, yes, just like that.”

Carefully, he helped his wife down and made sure she was seated comfortably.

Then, he ran through what his daughter had just told them again in his head.

He asked, “And then? What happens next?”

Da Bao had read this book before. It was truly amazing! So the sickly eldest brother was actually so powerful—he even ended up replacing the emperor. Respect!

Yan Yu sighed, “I didn’t keep reading after that. Second Yan was too much, and his name was so similar to yours that I couldn’t stand it…”

So, she only read the beginning.

This book was written a long time ago. Even now, she could only remember bits and pieces from the short opening.

“That’s already great. Better than knowing nothing at all,” Li Xuemei comforted her.

“Exactly! At least we know that your uncle’s illness isn’t a big deal. He’ll recover and even become a high-ranking official. But he’ll lose both his son and daughter…” Yan Huai’an frowned and couldn’t continue.

In terms of career, Old Yan was successful. But in every other aspect, his life was tragic.

“We know now, so of course, we’ll make sure those tragedies never happen,” Yan Yu said matter-of-factly. “That man’s son didn’t target Big Sister out of nowhere. He wanted to force her into marriage so he could take our family’s ten mu of land.”

“What? Explain in detail,” Li Xuemei said, serious now.

“I just remembered something else. Our land is at the village entrance. Besides us, all the surrounding land was bought by outsiders. They want to consolidate it into one piece and build a small farmstead for easier management.”

    That was all.

A powerful figure had taken an interest in the Yan family’s land. Or maybe it wasn’t the figure themselves but their underlings, who wanted convenience and mentioned it to the village head. The village head then came up with this malicious scheme.

Because normally, the Yan brothers would never sell their ten mu of land.

Yan Huaiwen already had the rank of a scholar and was both teaching and preparing for the imperial exams. His eldest son had inherited his talent for studying and was performing well at the academy. This year, he was set to take the Tongsheng exam.

If he passed, the family would have two scholars.

This was a prosperous omen for the family. Land was always in demand, never too much.

“Oh, right! Father, your twenty taels of gambling debt—it was a setup!”

Readers had a god’s-eye view. The author had already dropped plenty of hints.

    “Twenty taels? Gambling debt?”

Li Xuemei stared at the father and daughter duo. Her mind flashed back to how, earlier that day, Second Yan had been called away from the fields by some men.

She hadn’t thought much of it at the time. But now, looking back, those men’s clothing and demeanor did resemble old-time debt collectors.

Second Yan gave an awkward smile.

    “Xuemei, let me explain—”

Li Xuemei shot him a glare. “What’s there to explain? The plot laid everything out clearly. Our eldest brother split the family because of this.”

Second Yan slapped his thigh. “Exactly! Those people are too evil! How could they do something so despicable? Oh, right, Da Bao, do you think that national system of ours could lend us twenty taels?”

“Father, it’s a platform, not a system,” Yan Yu corrected him.

From the words alone, the two were entirely different things.

A platform was just that—a place for transactions.

It operated on the principle of equivalent exchange.

They needed to have something valuable enough to trade in order to get what they wanted.

“Haha, whatever it is, our country is amazing!” To think their homeland even went to the trouble of supporting unfortunate folks like them—truly heartwarming. The word “support” was particularly fitting. They were exactly the kind of people who needed aid. No doubt about it.

“It’s just a pity that the trading times on the platform aren’t fixed. The next opening is on the 20th of the fifth lunar month, which, converted to the Gregorian calendar, is…”

Yan Yu had been too excited earlier to notice the small characters below the lunar date. Now she focused and read them.

    “June 18th?”

Li Xuemei raised an eyebrow in surprise. Yan Yu’s eyes also lit up. Mother and daughter exchanged glances, instantly understanding each other.

Second Yan kept a straight face, but inwardly, he saw through his wife and daughter’s restless excitement.

As a man who paid the bills, he was intimately familiar with all the special dates. In recent years, these dates had cost him dearly—etched into his memory.

He closed his eyes slightly, tears welling up.

They had transmigrated into a book, yet they still couldn’t escape these dreaded days.

Fine! He might as well go check on Old Yan!
