Chapter 32: “Don’t Hit My Brother!”

As soon as word spread that the village head Guo had come to trouble the scholar, the entire threshing field erupted into action.

Almost all the able-bodied men in the village were working at the field. With livestock helping with the heavy labor, the men only needed to handle light tasks like flipping and drying the grains. The women had gone home to take care of household chores and were preparing to bring lunch at noon.

The moment Yan Xiangheng ran over with the news, not only did the village’s young men rush forward, but even the elderly men leaning on crutches hobbled along in anger.

What the hell is going on?!

That’s our scholar! A kindhearted, respectable man! If your kid got beaten up and you don’t know by whom, how can you just pin it on the scholar? And now you’re even saying Yan Lao’er ordered the ox to kick him? What nonsense!

    This is pure bullying!

A huge crowd surged toward the Yan household.

Of course, children always flocked to wherever the excitement was. In an instant, the commotion at the Yan house surpassed that of the threshing field. They ran wildly, shouting as they went:

“Dad, Second Uncle, hurry up! If you’re too slow, you’ll miss the fight!”

“Er Ya, we’re here to save you!”

“Charge! Let’s beat up the bad guys!”

Village head Guo hadn’t lost his mind completely—Yan Lao’er didn’t matter much; even if they beat him up, so what? The real target was Yan Da’ya.

As long as they got hold of Yan Da’ya, they had control over the scholar Yan and, by extension, his entire family.

“Search the house! Find Yan Da’ya and drag her out!” Guo commanded loudly.

Yan Lao’er panicked. He grabbed a sickle from the doorway and held it across his chest.

“I dare you!” His eyes burned with menace as he glared fiercely at everyone.

“My brother is a scholar, a man of academic merit! He’s not like you mud-legged peasants who have to bow and scrape before officials! His name is registered at the county office! Wherever he goes, people show him respect and call him ‘Scholar Master!’

If you dare step into my house today, our Yan family will fight you to the death!”

Yan Lao’er would never let them in. Da’ya’s personality—if she were really dragged away, could she even survive?!

Yan Huaiwen thought he had always been calm and composed, but at this moment, rage made him tremble all over.

“My second brother’s words are my words!

Whoever steps forward today is an enemy of the Yan family!

This is a fight to the death! Blood for blood!”

Guo’s men hesitated. They had just come to help with some mischief, maybe snatch a girl—why was this turning into something so serious?

Yan Lao’er had a blade! And they were all empty-handed!

Inside the house, Yan Yu had long since pulled her mother and Da’ya into hiding. Seeing the situation turning worse, she quickly motioned for Da’ya to help push a cabinet against the door.

As they worked, she reassured her mother, “Mom, just sit tight. It’s fine. Big Brother went to the threshing field for help.”

Sweat beaded on Li Xuemei’s forehead. How could she possibly stay calm? But in front of Da’ya, she had to put on a brave face.

“If they dare force their way into our home, the village folks won’t allow it. I’m not worried about anything else—I’m just afraid your father won’t hold back and end up seriously hurting someone.”

Yan Yu thought: Mom, you sure dare to say that.

Her dad had always been all talk, no action.

If she peeked out the window now, she’d see him waving that sickle like he was about to draw blood—but look closely, and his legs were trembling like crazy.

“Who dares come forward?! Who dares!” Yan Lao’er waved the sickle around wildly, shouting, “I’ll fight you all to the death!”

Yan Lao’er was waiting. Waiting anxiously!

    Why weren’t reinforcements here yet?!

He had clearly seen his nephew run off to call for help!

Wuuu wuuu wuuu! If he made it through this, he was definitely going to train that kid to run faster. You’re too slow! If they don’t come soon, your Second Uncle won’t be able to hold on!!!

Yan Huaiwen was deeply moved by his younger brother’s resolve.

At a crucial moment, blood ties matter most!

Lao’er was really giving it his all!

Feeling a surge of determination, he stood firmly beside his brother and declared loudly:

“Fathers and sons fight together in battle! Brothers stand side by side in war!

    Tianyou, I stand with you!”

Yan Lao’er glanced at his brother, nearly bursting into tears.

Brother! Can we at least grab some weapons before we start a fight?

You’re standing here empty-handed—this puts me in a really tough spot!

When the beating starts, do you realize they’ll definitely hit you first…

Just as Yan Lao’er was internally struggling, his long-awaited reinforcements finally arrived!

    “Scholar Master! What’s happening?!”

“Village Head Guo, you can’t bully our scholar!”

“If it’s a fight, take it up with us!”

Yan Lao’er instantly relaxed—and immediately collapsed to the ground.

    Old Yan: ……

    Guo and his gang: ……

Yan Lao’er himself was dumbfounded. Did I just mess up at the worst moment?

He was so embarrassed his forehead felt like it was on fire. Deciding to double down, he raised his voice and shouted:

“Don’t touch my brother! Come at me! Even if ten of you gang up on me, I won’t back down! I’ll take you all down with me!”

    That shout was a mistake.

The village men thought the thugs had already started attacking the scholar. How could they let that happen?!

They had all just received the scholar’s kindness—these honest folks were not going to stand by. Their eyes turned red with fury, and they charged like madmen, swinging fists at whoever they caught.

More villagers arrived, confused about what was happening, but seeing their own people fighting outsiders, they didn’t hesitate.

Their numbers gave them the upper hand, but some were still unsure if they should get involved—until Yan Lao’er suddenly howled:

“Don’t hit my brother! Brother, run!”

That pushed everyone over the edge.

They let out battle cries and surged forward, kicking and punching.

In a real brawl, someone like Guo, a well-known village bully, was bound to be targeted the most.

He couldn’t even tell who was hitting him anymore. He took punch after punch, was kicked to the ground, and barely managed to scramble onto his ox cart. Ignoring his men, he fled in a panic.

His followers had already surrendered, calling the villagers “grandpa” and “ancestor,” begging for mercy.

“Chase them out of the village! If they dare come back, break their legs!”

Finally, Village Chief Luo arrived, panting. He declared the one-sided fight over.

Luo’s younger brother led a group to escort Guo’s men out of the village. They even stood guard at the village entrance for a while before returning.

Yan Huaiwen looked at the villagers who had come to his aid, his heart warming.

“Thank you all for standing by us today. I am deeply grateful.” He bowed sincerely.

“Scholar Master, no need to thank us! This is only right!”

“Did he think our village was easy to bully? Bringing people to snatch a girl? He deserved that beating!”

“How could we just watch someone bully our scholar? That’d be like letting someone crap on our heads—”

Everyone chimed in, sharing the same sentiment: helping the scholar in a fight was only natural.

Yan Lao’er: “We beat up Guo today—he might seek revenge. How’s everyone’s wheat grinding going?”

Well… he had only intended to stir things up a little. Who knew the village would be so fierce?

They really beat those guys to a pulp!

Village Chief Luo was a bit uneasy too—Guo wasn’t an easy opponent. Today, he lost because he was outnumbered.

“We’re almost done. Just a few families left to grind their wheat. It’ll be finished by noon.”

“Brother, then shall we…” Yan Lao’er looked at his brother eagerly.

“We set off at You Hour (5-7 PM) today.”
