Chapter 54: How Can Someone as Wealthy as President Chen Live in Such an Old Apartment?

“Hurry up, help me support his right side.”

A taxi pulled over to the curb.

Shen Rou struggled to help Chen Mo out of the car, but he leaned his entire weight against her, making it difficult for her to support him. She quickly called out to Zhang Lan for help.

“I’m here. Which way are we going?”

Zhang Lan hurried over and took hold of Chen Mo’s other side.

    “This way.”

Shen Rou glanced at the location pin Yang Dahai had sent her and pointed in a direction.

“I mean, seriously, why did you have to drink so much?”

“How was I supposed to know his alcohol tolerance was this bad? It was just two bottles of fruit beer! This is the first time I’ve seen someone get drunk off just two bottles of fruit beer.”

    Zhang Lan looked innocent.

She did want to get Chen Mo drunk, but not like this.

If she had known, she would have just stuck to soft drinks.

What a waste—those meat rolls in the hotpot had barely been touched before Chen Mo got drunk.

    “Assistant Shen, what happened?”

Yang Dahai saw Shen Rou and another young woman struggling to support Chen Mo as they walked over and immediately went to meet them.

He had received a call from Shen Rou earlier, asking about Chen Mo’s residence, but he hadn’t thought much of it, assuming it was just work-related.

So, he had simply sent over Chen Mo’s location and building number.

But when he was about to head out to buy groceries, he arrived at the staircase only to see Chen Mo being half-carried in.

“Brother Yang, Chen Mo drank too much,” Shen Rou said sheepishly.

“I’ll take over. It’s tough getting up the stairs like this.”

Yang Dahai sighed in relief when he realized it was just drunkenness. He quickly stepped forward and took Chen Mo from their hands.

When they reached the third floor, he knocked hard on a door.

    “Old lady, open up.”

“What are you knocking for? Didn’t I tell you to go buy groceries? Why are you back so soon?”

The door remained closed, but a voice came from inside.

“Chen Mo got drunk. Make some sobering soup for him.”

When the door finally opened, Yang Dahai gestured at the unconscious Chen Mo slumped over his shoulder.

“Why is Little Chen drunk again? Didn’t I tell him not to drink because he can’t handle it?”

“Take him back to his place first. I’ll bring the sobering soup over once it’s ready.”

Seeing Chen Mo completely passed out, Dong Hong quickly rushed back inside. From the clattering sounds, it was clear she had already started chopping ingredients and preparing the soup.

Hearing her words, Shen Rou lowered her head even more in guilt.

It was all her fault that Chen Mo had gotten this drunk.

“Assistant Shen, check Chen Mo’s pockets for his apartment key,” Yang Dahai said as he struggled to support Chen Mo up to the fourth floor.

Both his hands were occupied holding Chen Mo up, so he had no way of looking for the key himself.

    “Ah, okay.”

Shen Rou quickly responded and started searching Chen Mo’s pockets.

Once she found the key, she unlocked the door.

Yang Dahai expertly guided Chen Mo to the bed, then turned to Shen Rou and Zhang Lan.

“Alright, you two keep an eye on him. I’ll go check on the sobering soup.”

“Okay, Uncle Yang,” Shen Rou said quickly.

As soon as Yang Dahai left, Zhang Lan asked curiously, “You know him?”

“Uncle Yang is Chen Mo’s driver, and Aunt Dong is the company cafeteria’s chef,” Shen Rou explained.

“What’s Chen Mo’s relationship with them? They seem really close, and they even live in the same building.”

    “I don’t think they’re related.”

Shen Rou shook her head. She remembered Yang Dahai’s interview—it hadn’t seemed like they knew each other beforehand.

As for why they lived in the same building, that was probably just a coincidence.

    “Oh.”

Zhang Lan nodded, then started wandering around the apartment.

“Hey! Don’t just walk around! This isn’t our house.”

    Shen Rou quickly stopped her.

“I’m just curious to see how a big boss like him lives.”

“But from the looks of it, this place is pretty ordinary.”

Zhang Lan scanned the old-fashioned decor and the worn-out furniture that looked like it had been used for years.

    That didn’t make sense.

According to Shen Rou, Chen Mo was rich—so why was he living in such a shabby place?

“Could he be like you, unwilling to spend money on himself?” Zhang Lan suddenly asked, eyes lighting up.

    “Huh? No way.”

“Chen Mo is always generous when it comes to spending on employees.”

Shen Rou instinctively denied it. She worked closely with Chen Mo and knew firsthand how much money he spent on his employees every day.

    “I mean on himself.”

“Just like you—earning money only to spend it all on the orphanage while being reluctant to use it on yourself.”

“Otherwise, how do you explain why someone as wealthy as Chen Mo is living in such a plain apartment?”

Zhang Lan stroked her chin as if she was seriously analyzing the situation.

    “President Chen is like me?”

Shen Rou exclaimed in surprise, glancing around at the simple apartment decor. Zhang Lan’s analysis didn’t seem unreasonable.

So, President Chen was that noble—living in a modest place while ensuring that employee dormitories had the best furnishings?

Shen Rou’s gaze toward Chen Mo, lying on the bed, was filled with admiration.

“Why are you back down here?”

Dong Hong looked surprised when she saw Yang Dahai return.

“I asked Assistant Shen to watch over him. I came to check if the sobering soup was ready.”

Yang Dahai casually stepped into the kitchen.

“You! You have no foresight at all.”

Dong Hong shot him a look of disappointment.

    “What did I do now?”

Yang Dahai scratched his head, confused.

“Think about it. Assistant Shen already works closely with Chen Mo, which gives her an advantage.”

“And now you’re letting her take care of him? If they start developing feelings for each other, what then?”

Dong Hong grumbled as she stirred the soup.

“Wouldn’t that be a good thing? I think Assistant Shen and Chen Mo make a great pair.”

Yang Dahai looked even more puzzled.

    “You! You’re driving me crazy.”

“I was planning to introduce Yao Yao to Chen Mo.”

Dong Hong pointed her ladle at him, then sighed and set it down before shoving him aside.

“Move over, you’re in the way.”

“Are you mad? I’d love to introduce our daughter to him too, but she’s been away and hasn’t come back no matter how many times we call her.”

“You can’t stop others from getting close to him either—that wouldn’t be fair to Chen Mo.”

“Young people should naturally interact and see where things go. Whether they end up together or not is their business, not ours.”

Yang Dahai chuckled as he tried to placate her.

Dong Hong shot him a glare.

“And you talk about fairness? Back when you were chasing me, you secretly got your buddies to beat up all my other suitors. Was that fair?”
