Chapter 39: So It Was This Old Trickster

    Once Supervisor Qibu left,

Wang Yang absentmindedly stared at the computer screen.

Chen Jun sighed at the sight of Wang Yang. He knew that saying anything more would be pointless. The best way for Wang Yang to learn was to run into walls—once he hit them hard enough, he’d eventually figure things out.

    Buzz, buzz…

The phone on the desk suddenly vibrated.

Wang Yang snapped out of his thoughts and glanced at the caller ID—it was Assistant Shen.

Could there be an issue with the renovations?

With that thought, he quickly picked up the call.

No matter what, this was his first order, and he couldn’t afford to be careless.

“Hello, Assistant Shen. Is there a problem with the renovation?”

“Oh! No, the renovation is fine!”

“I understand. I’ll go there tomorrow.”

    “Alright!”

    Hanging up,

Wang Yang slowly lifted his head to look at Chen Jun, who hadn’t left yet. He spoke softly.

“The clothing factory called. They have a staff dormitory and an office that need renovations. They want me to go over tomorrow to take measurements.”

“They called you directly? They didn’t go through the renovation website?”

Chen Jun raised a key point. If the client contacted Wang Yang directly, then this order was exclusively his. As long as his design and budget met expectations, the deal was as good as done.

He had encountered similar cases before—usually, it happened when a former client trusted him enough to recommend him to a friend.

But such cases were rare. He might not even come across one in a whole year.

Could it be that Wang Yang lucked out on his very first order?

Chen Jun looked at Wang Yang with a tinge of envy. He had to admit—this guy had great luck.

    “I don’t know.”

Wang Yang shook his head. He hadn’t even considered that possibility, so he never thought to ask.

“You’ll find out tomorrow. The fact that they called you directly means it’s very likely your job alone. Make sure you seize this opportunity—it could very well be your second order.”

Chen Jun patted Wang Yang’s shoulder, his tone carrying a hint of jealousy.

After saying that, he didn’t wait for a response and simply turned to leave.

    Nightfall, Jiangcheng University, Girls’ Dormitory

“Rou Rou, is this all you do all day?”

Zhang Lan sat cross-legged on her bed, removing her makeup while speaking in surprise.

She had assumed that with Shen Rou’s salary recently jumping to 8,000 yuan, her workload must be heavy. But as it turned out, all she did was follow her boss around, sign some contracts, and that was it.

“That’s all there is to it. Even if I wanted to find something else to do, there’s nothing to do.”

Shen Rou lay on her desk, looking troubled.

She had studied a lot of materials on being an assistant and learned many things. But in the end, she found that none of it was needed at the company.

At first, she was responsible for bank transactions, insurance, and taxes.

But after hiring finance, accounting, and HR staff, those tasks were taken off her hands.

Yet, despite that, Boss Chen still gave her a raise.

No matter how she thought about it, something felt off.

“Well, it’s a small clothing factory—there probably isn’t much to do anyway.”

“Now I’m jealous of your job. You don’t have to do anything but still get paid so much. Maybe I should just stick with you.”

Zhang Lan put away her mirror, looking envious.

“What? You’re giving up on your dream of becoming a singer?”

Shen Rou rolled her eyes. Zhang Lan had always dreamed of being a singer. Anytime there was a music talent show, she would enthusiastically participate.

She didn’t believe her roommate would give up so easily.

“Of course not! I’m going to be a superstar one day!”

Zhang Lan lifted her chin confidently.

Then, as if remembering something, she turned to Shen Rou.

“I remember seeing a drama once where the assistant managed everything for the boss—including picking out his clothes and matching his ties.”

“And in the end, the assistant ended up with the boss.”

“Why don’t you try that too? Didn’t you say your boss is young and handsome? If it works out, you’ll be a rich lady and won’t have to work hard ever again!”

The more Zhang Lan spoke, the more excited she became. She finally gave Shen Rou a gossip-loving grin.

“You want a beating, don’t you?”

Blushing with anger, Shen Rou grabbed a small object from the desk and threw it at Zhang Lan. But soon, she calmed down.

She remembered that when she had looked up assistant-related information a few days ago, she had indeed come across something similar.

After thinking for a moment, she looked at Zhang Lan.

    “What was that drama called?”

    The Company Cafeteria

    “Good evening, Boss Chen!”

    In the cafeteria,

Chef Wang Maonian, who was overseeing the renovations, quickly greeted Chen Mo when he saw him enter.

“Mm, carry on. I’m just here to check things out.”

    Chen Mo nodded in response.

He had come to the company that morning, and since there wasn’t much to do, he decided to check on the renovation progress.

Besides, the person scheduled to take measurements should be arriving soon. The newly rented workshop was located just behind the cafeteria—it wasn’t far.

“Alright, Boss Chen, take a look around. Let me know if you need anything.”

    Wang Maonian replied respectfully.

    “Mm.”

Chen Mo nodded and was about to head upstairs when his gaze lingered on Wang Maonian’s face for a moment.

“Boss Chen, is there something wrong?”

Noticing Chen Mo’s stare, Wang Maonian grew a little nervous.

“You attended the company team-building event a while back, right?”

    Chen Mo asked abruptly.

Hearing this, Wang Maonian immediately relaxed. Smiling, he said,

“Yes, Boss Chen! I even toasted you that night!”

    “So it was you.”

Chen Mo gave him a meaningful look. He had felt that this guy looked familiar—turns out, he was the one who had offered him the final drink when he was already tipsy.

At the time, Chen Mo didn’t want to drink anymore.

But this guy had flattered him, saying things like: “Boss Chen, you’re so generous! It’s incredible that you’d spend so much on a company dinner!”

Unable to refuse, Chen Mo had taken another drink.

And that last glass had knocked him out, forcing his employees to carry him home.

Finally, he had found the culprit.

“Boss Chen, you still remember me?”

Wang Maonian was flattered—he hadn’t expected the boss to remember him.

    “Of course I do.”

Chen Mo emphasized each word, already contemplating how to get revenge.

    Firing him wouldn’t do.

Docking his pay? That’d be punishing himself.

    This was tricky…

“Boss Chen, is something the matter?”

Wang Maonian hesitated when he saw his boss looking troubled.

    “No, nothing.”

Chen Mo shook his head. Like I’d tell you that I’m plotting my revenge.

“Master Wang, I got the stuff. Even though the store isn’t far, running there still wore me out.”

Just then, another middle-aged man walked in, carrying a bag and panting heavily.

“It’s because you never exercise. Same here—I get exhausted from just a little running. Thanks for your help.”

Wang Maonian took the bag and expressed his gratitude.

Chen Mo listened to their conversation from the side.

    His eyes slowly brightened.

Looks like he had just figured out a way to get his revenge.
