Chapter 9: As My Employees, How Could You Be Without Social Insurance and Housing Fund?

“Mr. Chen, you were looking for me.”

Li Shen knocked on the door and entered the office.

    “Mm, have a seat.”

Chen Mo gestured toward the chair in front of him.

Seeing Li Shen sit down, he spoke lightly.

“I wanted to ask you about something.”

    “Please go ahead, Mr. Chen.”

Li Shen placed his hands on his lap, speaking somewhat nervously.

“Don’t be nervous. I just want to know if there’s anything in the workshop that needs improvement or if the employees have any suggestions. Feel free to speak your mind.”

Li Shen thought for a moment.

“The workshop is already in great shape. There’s nothing that needs improvement.”

Now that air conditioning had been installed, what more could they ask for?

“Think carefully—any areas that require spending money or any expectations the employees have, just say it. I won’t hold it against you.”

Chen Mo wasn’t giving up and pressed further.

This time, Li Shen thought for a long while before finally speaking.

    “There is one expectation.”

“I’ve heard some of the senior employees mentioning that it would be great if the company provided social insurance and a housing fund.”

Li Shen said seriously, though he didn’t hold much hope for it. In small private enterprises like this, he had never seen one that actually provided insurance for employees.

Upon hearing this, Chen Mo instantly perked up—wasn’t this another opportunity to spend money?

“That’s a great suggestion. As a responsible business, providing social insurance and a housing fund is the bare minimum. Starting next month, the company will fully cover these costs for all employees.”

    “Really, Mr. Chen?”

Li Shen looked at Chen Mo in surprise. He hadn’t expected that just casually mentioning it would get immediate approval from the boss.

“Of course, it’s true. You can go back and inform the other employees so they can prepare their documents. We might need them in a few days.”

    “Understood, Mr. Chen.”

Chen Mo looked at Li Shen with satisfaction. This guy was pretty good—he knew how to help him spend money. Much better than Wei Yan.

After chatting for a while longer and seeing that Li Shen couldn’t think of any more ways to spend money, Chen Mo dismissed him.

Social insurance and a housing fund, huh?

Chen Mo murmured to himself. He wasn’t very familiar with the procedures for handling insurance, so it seemed like he needed to hire an assistant soon. With an assistant taking care of things, he’d have a much easier time.

Since the system was footing the bill, there was no reason not to hire one.

He checked his phone and found out that there was a job fair at the city government building tomorrow. Looked like a good opportunity to try his luck.

    In the Workshop

Li Shen clapped his hands, gathering all the employees together.

“Li Zi, does the boss have any new instructions?”

An older employee asked with a smile.

Ever since the air conditioning was installed yesterday, everyone was still buzzing with excitement.

Now, seeing Li Shen return from the office and call them together, it was likely that the boss had something planned.

“There are no new tasks, but the boss asked me to inform everyone that starting next month, the company will be covering social insurance and the housing fund for all employees. Over the next few days, everyone should prepare the necessary documents, as they may be needed soon.”

After speaking, Li Shen watched their expressions closely. Sure enough, after he finished, everyone looked utterly shocked.

“Li Zi, you’re not joking, are you? The boss is really going to provide social insurance and a housing fund for us?”

    One employee asked in disbelief.

“You think I’d joke about something like this?”

Li Shen retorted. Even if he had eight times the guts, he wouldn’t dare joke about this.

“Social insurance and a housing fund! I was just talking about this the other day, and now it’s actually happening.”

“This is amazing! I never thought a small private company like this would provide social insurance and a housing fund.”

“Mr. Chen really is a conscientious boss!”

“Haha, if those former employees who left heard about this, they’d probably regret it to death.”

The entire workshop erupted into excited discussions.

After a while, one employee suddenly asked,

“Li Zi, what documents do we need to apply for social insurance and the housing fund?”

    Li Shen was momentarily stunned.

    That’s right!

What documents were needed? The boss hadn’t mentioned it.

Should he go back and ask?

    No, that wouldn’t do.

The boss was incredibly busy—how could he bother him with such a trivial matter?

    Thinking it over, he said,

“Just check on your phones, and you’ll find out.”

Time passed quickly, and soon it was the afternoon.

Wei Yan knocked on the office door and entered.

“Mr. Chen, I’ve found workers to renovate the walls. They can start work tomorrow.”

“I’m also planning to travel out of town tomorrow to meet a big client, so I may not be able to clock in. I’d like your approval.”

Chen Mo’s heart skipped a beat. A big client? No way—if the deal went through, that would mean even more revenue!

No, he had to stop this!

“Wei Yan, put the big client on hold for now. I just realized that our office furniture is already worn out. I need you to order a whole new set.”

    “Mr. Chen, this…”

“I know you’re eager to bring in business for the company, but right now, we’re in the middle of internal restructuring. Soon, we’ll be hiring more staff, including salespeople. So for now, focus on handling internal matters before worrying about sales orders.”

“This may affect your earnings, but don’t worry—next month, your salary will be calculated based on your highest previous commission earnings.”

Chen Mo looked at Wei Yan with a deep, meaningful gaze.

He had discovered a loophole in the system. While it didn’t allow him to deliberately incur losses, as long as he provided a reasonable explanation before making an expense, it was within the system’s permissible range.

Wei Yan opened his mouth, but seeing that the boss had made up his mind, he had no choice but to drop the argument.

    Late Evening—At a BBQ Stand

Wei Yan and Li Shen sat at a small table, eating skewers and drinking beer.

“What’s wrong, Yan? You look troubled.”

Li Shen took a bite of lamb skewer and asked casually.

    “It’s nothing serious.”

Wei Yan took a sip of beer, frowning.

“What is it? Did your wife run off with someone? If that’s the case, there’s nothing I can do to help.”

“You brat, you looking for a beating?”

Wei Yan glared at Li Shen, then continued.

“It’s about work. Mr. Chen assigned me several random tasks today, just to keep me from doing sales.”

“That’s it? Just do whatever the boss tells you. It’s not like he’s short on money.”

Li Shen responded indifferently and took another swig of beer.

“I know that. But from the way he looked at me, I feel like there’s something more to it.”

    “Oh?”

Li Shen rubbed his chin in thought. After a moment, he suddenly looked up.

“The boss said something about handling internal matters first, right?”

    “Yes!”

    Wei Yan nodded.

    Li Shen grinned.

“I think I know the reason.”

    “Tell me!”

    Wei Yan leaned in eagerly.

—Social insurance is a government program that provides financial support for unemployment, disability, illness, retirement, and work-related injuries. It is funded by payroll taxes or contributions from employees, employers, and the government to ensure economic security.
