by MarineTLChapter 338: J Clutching the Bible in Repentance, K Not Far from Becoming the Little King
The sight of dozens of body bags instantly made Walker curse under his breath, “Fuck shit.”
He had already been mentally prepared on the drive over, assuming that once the real mastermind realized Little Morgan’s body had been discovered, they would likely silence all witnesses to avoid exposure.
But seeing it in person—row upon row of body bags—still filled Walker with a deep, unspeakable rage. More than that, he was worried that all the witnesses had truly been eliminated.
If that were the case, how was he supposed to find the killer? How could he report back to Old Morgan?
…
Suppressing the emotions churning inside him, Walker pointed to the body bags and spoke to Captain Paul.
“I need to inspect the victims.”
“I suspect they’re connected to a homicide case, so I need to examine them.”
Captain Paul immediately stepped aside, shrugging indifferently.
“Go ahead, Chief Walker.”
“We’re firefighters. Our job is to put out fires. Whether this is a murder case or not, that’s for you to determine.”
“But I should give you a heads-up.”
“Chief Walker, when my team pulled the bodies out, they noticed none of them showed signs of struggle before death.”
“So it’s likely… they were killed before the explosion and fire. As for the fire itself, it was probably set to destroy evidence.”
Chief Walker nodded in acknowledgment. He waved to the officers behind him, signaling them to move up, then stepped toward the body bags himself.
One.
Two.
Three.
…
After a quick count, Chief Walker confirmed there were eleven body bags in total.
That number matched exactly the number of perpetrators and accomplices he had identified from the video Old Morgan had provided earlier. A thought crept into his mind.
Could it be… that the punk man leading the group in the video had also died in this explosion?
If so, all he needed to do was confirm the identities of the dead, and he could report back to Old Morgan for now.
As for the so-called mastermind behind it all, it wasn’t even certain they existed yet.
Even if further investigation was needed, he could ask Old Morgan for more time. This wasn’t something that could be solved in just three days.
While entertaining this convenient line of thinking, he crouched down and unzipped the body bag on the far left.
But the moment he saw the condition of the corpse inside, even the seasoned Chief Walker couldn’t help but frown.
The body was horribly burned, almost unrecognizable. The clothes had melted into the flesh, leaving ulcer-like bloody holes all over the skin.
The face was completely disfigured by the flames, making it impossible to identify the person visually.
At this point, DNA testing was likely the only way to confirm their identity.
Walker’s expression turned grim as he looked to the officers beside him and gave a firm order.
“Open them all.”
“Check if there are any female victims, and see if any of the bodies are intact enough for a preliminary ID.”
The reason for checking for female victims was to cross-reference the bodies with the people seen in the video.
In the footage Old Morgan had provided, the group that took Little Morgan to New York Harbor consisted entirely of men. There were no women involved.
The officers quickly began unzipping the body bags and conducting a rough inspection. One after another, they reported back.
“No female victims. Can’t determine facial features.”
“Same here.”
“Same.”
“Same… same here… ugh…”
…
A rookie officer who had only recently joined the NYPD stepped forward to open a body bag, only to recoil in horror at the gruesome sight.
The thick stench of charred flesh hit him hard, triggering a wave of nausea. This was not something they’d prepared him for in training. Acid surged up his throat, and he began vomiting uncontrollably.
Walker cast a glance at him, clearly unimpressed, then slowly stood and waved his hand again, giving his next order.
“Load the bodies into the police vans.”
“We need to run DNA tests and cross-check them with the intel Black dug up. That’s the only way to confirm their identities.”
“But unless something unexpected comes up, I’d say the people from the video were all silenced in advance and are lying here now.”
“No point wasting time here. Let’s head back to the station and regroup.”
…
Meanwhile.
In a luxury villa on the outskirts of New York.
J sat cross-legged on the floor in front of the fireplace, his once-arrogant punk hairstyle now replaced with a plain buzz cut. He held a Bible in both hands, eyes closed in solemn concentration as he recited passages.
He seemed to be repenting for his sins—or perhaps praying for the souls of his fallen comrades.
A closer look would reveal that J’s appearance had changed dramatically from before.
Or rather, he was now wearing a human-skin mask crafted by Q.
In the villa’s kitchen, a man in a tailored suit—Professor—was elegantly slicing into a premium steak with knife and fork. A glass of fine red wine sat beside his plate.
Across from him sat K, also cutting into a steak with a glass of wine at hand.
On either side of K were two more plates of steak, untouched, their intended recipients yet to arrive.
After placing a bite of steak into his mouth and chewing slowly, Professor picked up a napkin and dabbed at the corner of his lips. His voice was calm and unruffled.
“Why isn’t J coming to eat?”
K didn’t answer right away. He finished chewing his steak, swallowed, then dabbed his mouth with a napkin before responding in the same calm, indifferent tone.
“He’s repenting.”
“Repenting for sacrificing those loyal subordinates just to save himself.”
Hearing this, Professor didn’t seem surprised. He picked up the glass of red wine beside him and took a slow sip.
“J is still the same as ever.”
“I remember, after his first kill, he held the Bible just like this, repenting devoutly, over and over.”
“But every time his repentance ended, he came back stronger, and more satisfying to me.”
“K, those useless fools at the New York Police Department are probably finished, but this was just a small test before the real exam. You need to remember…”
“You were the one who chose not to give up on J. When the Dragon Country Police arrive in a few days, I expect you to give me a satisfactory answer.”
“If you can make the Dragon Country Police pay a price, then your path to becoming the Little King won’t be far off.”
At this point, Professor slowly stood up, his voice gravelly and low.
“Go on, keep eating.”
“Q should be arriving soon. That steak is hers. You two can go over the details of the next phase.”
“Remember, don’t disappoint me again…”
