Chapter 42: The Scumbag Who Eats Soft Rice and Takes It Hard 7 (End)

These children were all determined. Perhaps because they had suffered hardships, as long as they were given even a straw to grasp, they would cling to it tightly.

Later, among these children, some truly excelled in their studies. They advanced through the imperial examination system, and in the end, some even passed. Though they were only shujishi (associate scholars), they were still considered outstanding.

The rest of the children all learned a trade. Whether they were physically whole or had disabilities, they each gained a means to support themselves.

    This was a life-saving grace.

They all knew that everything they had now was thanks to a young lady named Ren Xin.

Ren Xin, however, did not think much of it. She simply wanted merit and to complete her mission—killing two birds with one stone. In the previous world, she had barely done anything, which significantly reduced her merit. That would not do. She was, after all, a revenge-seeker carrying deep hatred.

She had to replenish her virtue.

Later, more and more children arrived at Shan An Hall. With a grand gesture, Ren Xin continued to support them.

At first, the merchants were eager to take advantage of her, believing she would be easy to manipulate. However, before they could make a move, news spread that Ren Xin had received an imperial decree praising her. The decree stated that the Ren family was truly a house of benevolence and virtue, and as a mark of imperial favor, they were awarded a golden plaque, urging them to continue their good deeds.

Ren Xin: “!!!” Was this an unexpected reward?

Only later did she realize that some of the children she had sponsored had risen to official positions and were now serving the court. When they spoke about their origins, the emperor was moved. He sighed, saying it was a blessing for the world that such a kind-hearted person existed—it was even his own good fortune.

And so, Ren Xin received an imperial commendation—or rather, the Ren family did.

Relatives who had been distant before suddenly appeared, all eyeing the plaque hanging at the entrance with envy. After all, they shared the same surname, and they, too, would benefit from the family’s good name.

Everyone treated Ren Xin with overwhelming enthusiasm. The clan leader, who had previously been indifferent and dismissive toward her, now spoke kindly, saying she could always turn to the clan for help—they were, after all, one big family.

Ren Xin sneered. In her past life, this old bastard had accepted bribes from Feng Yutao and turned a blind eye to the original host’s tragic death. Now, he was quick to switch allegiances—whoever had the power was family to him. With such a clan leader, the Ren family was truly pitiful.

But she did not care about meddling in clan affairs. The rise and fall of the Ren family had nothing to do with her.

Meanwhile, after Feng Yutao’s downfall, he returned to his hometown in disgrace. He lived in a daze, and under his mother’s arrangement, he married Zhen Niang. Before, he had cherished her because he lacked nothing and could afford romance. But now, being impotent, he harbored dark thoughts as he looked at his beautiful wife.

If Zhen Niang so much as spoke to another man, she would be beaten upon returning home. Over time, it worsened—Feng Yutao would beat and humiliate her whenever he was in a foul mood.

Zhen Niang thought about running away, but there was nowhere to go. Her family refused to help her, and in such a vast world, there was no place for her to seek refuge.

She not only had to manage the household but also took on sewing work to make ends meet. She even tried persuading Feng Yutao to work as an accountant, hoping to ease their financial struggles.

But Feng Yutao remained trapped in his past illusions. “Do you know the kind of life I used to live? I used to casually tip my servants two taels of silver. I used the finest ink and paper and dined on rare delicacies. And now you want me to bow and scrape just to do accounting? Are you insulting me? Let me tell you—I am a scholar! I won’t suffer such humiliation!”

By now, even Feng Yutao’s family had grown tired of him. His older brothers, who had toiled to support his studies in hopes that he would bring prosperity to the family, now saw him as a disgrace.

Originally, they had been thrilled when he married a wealthy wife—it meant he had a bright future, money, and stability, all of which would benefit the family.

But what had he done instead? He had been blinded by lust, failed to cherish his good fortune, and ended up divorced and stripped of his scholar’s title. He had ruined the family’s hopes.

His brothers eventually cut ties with him completely. They warned their parents that if they secretly supported Feng Yutao again, they would sever relations with them as well.

Feng’s mother wept every day. The good life she had once glimpsed had vanished too quickly. She had barely had time to enjoy being a wealthy matron before it all slipped away. Now, her dream of living in luxury had shattered. How had things come to this…?

Ren Xin, meanwhile, thought that since she had free time in the ancient world, she might as well learn some useful skills—embroidery, herbal remedies, medicine… whatever she could pick up.

She also took time to stockpile valuable items.

Later, she traveled to many places with Chun Tao. One day, she asked her, “Are you really not going to get married? You’re just going to wander the world with me?”

Chun Tao grinned. “I won’t marry. I’m freer by Miss’s side.”

Ren Xin simply smiled and then said leisurely, “Alright then. Let’s go and see more of the world…”

When Ren Xin finally passed away, hundreds of the children she had once saved returned, bringing their families with them. They knelt before her bedside to pay their respects.

It was said that even the Ren family did not kneel in such numbers. The wailing of mourners shook the heavens.

Everyone said, A house of virtue and kindness will always bring blessings to future generations.

If the old master of the Ren family knew about this in the afterlife, he would rest in peace. The Ren family’s descendants were truly numerous—though they may not be biological, does that really matter…?
