Chapter 130: The Doomsday Martyr – 13 (End)

The zombie tide finally arrived. Ren Xin was jolted awake from her slumber by the sharp, piercing wail of the alarms echoing through the corridors.

It was a grim reminder to everyone that the moment of life and death had come.

Ren Xin packed up everything she could, changed into a beautiful outfit, and brought out the heavy broadsword she had prepared earlier, along with a stack of bomb-like talismans1 she had hoarded from who-knows-where.

She turned to Book Spirit Number One with valiant determination. “Let’s go. This Ginseng is taking you to earn some Virtue Points!”

Book Spirit Number One echoed her enthusiasm with equal bravado. “I’m going offline now! I can’t bear to witness the suffering of the mortal world.”

    Ren Xin: “…”

Huhu, however, possessed the courage of a true tiger and insisted on fighting by Ren Xin’s side. She rejected her. “Huhu, don’t forget, you’re still technically stolen property!”

    The fat tiger was fuming!

Ren Xin’s appearance didn’t attract much attention. Ordinary people without powers were being escorted to the lower underground levels by ability users.

The remaining men, who had been vaccinated and still had their strength, prepared to join the fight.

Everyone gathered on the surface. Their weapons were a mismatched assortment, but with leaders at the front boosting morale and igniting their fighting spirit, everyone was itching for the zombies to show up just so they could hack the bastards to pieces.

In the crowd, Ren Xin spotted an expressionless Wen Ci. He stood there as if this zombie tide posed no threat to him at all. His arrogant demeanor was a world apart from the clingy man who used to lounge on her bed!

As if sensing something, Wen Ci looked back and scanned the crowd, only then discovering that Ren Xin was actually there. His previously stoic face instantly crumbled into panic, but with so many people between them, it was impossible to reach her.

Ren Xin waved at him enthusiastically. Wen Ci mouthed the words, telling her to go back immediately.

Hmph! This Ginseng had said it before: she doesn’t listen!

    She doesn’t listen to anyone.

The zombie tide arrived, blotting out the horizon. It was interspersed with mutated zombie beasts, moving with organization and discipline. It was clear they had a leader.

Ren Xin moved nimbly through the crowd. She needed to find the zombie leader and take it down with her.

While preparing for battle, Wen Ci searched everywhere for Ren Xin’s shadow, but there were simply too many people to find her.

“Book Spirit Number One, it’s time to show you’re useful. Locate the zombie leader for me!”

Book Spirit Number One: “???” Had it not acted useless enough lately?

Huhu applied for combat again. “I know where the zombie leader is. I can smell its scent.”

Look at Huhu! A true model of the industry!

Book Spirit Number One: “…” As long as it stayed useless enough, no one could outshine it in laziness!

Ren Xin had already moved away from the crowd. Following the white tiger’s directions, she entered a dense forest. Soon, she didn’t even need Huhu’s navigation; she could smell the rotting stench herself.

The zombie leader looked like it hadn’t bathed in eight hundred years. Its clothes were covered in mysterious, dark-brown stains.

Ren Xin changed her mind. “I don’t want to die with him anymore. I can’t mistreat myself like that.”

But the zombie leader didn’t give Ren Xin time to regret. It launched an attack directly at her.

Whoa! It was a mental-type, and quite a powerful one at that.

Ren Xin threw her bomb talismans at the zombie leader as if they cost nothing. The explosions made it twitch and convulse. They were effective, but they didn’t seem to cause any substantial damage; instead, they only succeeded in infuriating the creature.

Ren Xin rummaged through her stash again and found it!

The Upgraded Elimination Special: Buy one, get a triple-blast free. Enjoy your trip to the afterlife!

Book Spirit Number One shrieked, “What do you mean ‘triple’?”

Ren Xin explained patiently, “There’s a spot for you and Huhu too. The three of us are trading our lives for his.”

Book Spirit Number One: “…” Couldn’t they just hide in the space?

She didn’t want to. This world was far too boring; it didn’t even have the internet!

The sound of the explosion roared. At the very moment Ren Xin closed her eyes, she saw Wen Ci rushing toward her from the distance. He watched helplessly as Ren Xin was swallowed by a sea of fire, unable to save her.

Wen Ci was pinned to the ground by his teammates to shield him from the blast wave.

The zombie leader was thus eliminated by the “cheating” Ginseng. On the front lines, the leaderless zombies and zombie beasts lost their will to fight and were slaughtered by the enraged humans until not a single one remained.

The end of the world was officially declared over. Though a few stray zombies remained, scientists had developed a more powerful vaccine, so people no longer feared being injured. Everyone vowed to wipe out every last zombie.

Wen Ci kept himself busy every day like a spinning top2, as if that could keep the pain at bay. The small, cozy rental apartment that held the memories of him and Ren Xin was slated for demolition. It felt as though he would soon be unable to find any trace that she had ever existed.

The world would never know that it was a quirky, eccentric young girl who had saved everyone by sacrificing herself to take down the zombie leader.

Peace had finally returned to the world.

    But she was gone.

    Translator’s Notes

    1. talismans: In this context, these are ‘Fu’ (符), paper slips inscribed with spiritual symbols used in Taoist exorcism or cultivation to trigger elemental effects like fire or explosions.
    2. spinning top: A common Chinese idiom (忙得像个陀螺 – busy as a spinning top) used to describe someone who is constantly moving or working without rest, often to the point of exhaustion.
