    Chapter 118: The Doomsday Martyr – 1

“Congratulations to the host for completing the mission! You have received Gift Pack x1 and 20 Virtue Points. The mission requester has given a five-star rating! Evaluation from the Book Spirit: If you continue to sin like this, you will never be able to make up for your lack of virtue.”

    Ren Xin: “…”

“I have two gift packs now. Open them both!”

“Congratulations to the host for obtaining: Spiritual Spring Water x1L, Detoxification Pill x1.”

Looking at the rewards, Ren Xin couldn’t help but complain, “This tiny bit of spring water isn’t even enough for me to brush my teeth.”

Book Spirit Number One retorted unhappily, “Host, if you insist on brushing your teeth with spiritual spring water, you’ll only become even more sharp-tongued.”

Ren Xin: “…” Who does this thing think it’s talking to!

This mission took place in an apocalyptic world. It was already the third year of the end times. Humanity had established safe zones, but they still had to remain vigilant against the constant threat of zombies and natural disasters.

The safe zone was constructed like an underground palace. The higher one’s status and power, the deeper they lived. Ability users lived at the very center of power.

The original owner of this body was a useless commoner, the kind used as the first line of defense—cannon fodder. She worked diligently every day, but she was burdened by an elder sister who was constantly trying to climb the social ladder. Her sister, Ren Yi, wanted to reach the center of power, preferably to be kept by a high-ranking official as a pampered canary1. This was the dream of every poor girl these days.

The original owner worked herself to the bone to earn rations, not only supporting her sister but also sponsoring her childhood sweetheart. She gave everything willingly because she loved the boy and her sister was her only remaining family.

She felt that as long as her sister and her sweetheart were doing well, anything was fine. As long as they could live a peaceful life, no amount of hardship or exhaustion mattered.

Unfortunately, her luck didn’t last. The safe zone was breached, a zombie riot broke out, and she was dragged in front of her own sister to serve as a human shield. She died at the hands of the zombies.

Ren Xin: “???” The knots in her ginseng heart were twisting into pretzels!

“Mission Requirement: Ensure the safety and well-being of the elder sister and the childhood sweetheart!”

Ren Xin: “…” Is a ginseng’s life not bitter enough already?

“I refuse this mission. I cannot violate my integrity as a ginseng. Being a martyr isn’t in my nature; I can’t act the part.”

Book Spirit Number One was also speechless and could only offer cold comfort. “You have to take it whether you want to or not!”

“I won’t. I don’t want the Virtue Points. At worst, I’ll take a bad review. I’m just going to lay low and do nothing.”

    “Fine by me!”

    Ren Xin: “???”

“Please sign the Book Spirit’s liability waiver to ensure my safety!”

“Aren’t you going to consider staying by my side through thick and thin?”

“Not at all. We’re just passing acquaintances, a fair-weather friendship at best.”

Ren Xin: “…” Fine. Now she definitely wasn’t signing. If she was going down, they were all going down together!

“…” The host was playing a very literal game of “eyes closed, world gone.”

Ren Xin opened her eyes and looked around the tiny room where even turning around was a struggle. Her sister, Ren Yi, had forcibly occupied more than half of the space, even setting up a small table dedicated exclusively to her makeup.

The original owner wasn’t even allowed to use it to eat.

It was already time for the original owner’s usual work shift, but Ren Xin didn’t move, intending to sleep a bit longer.

“Hey, aren’t you getting up yet? We don’t even know where today’s food is coming from. How can you just lie there? Also, I saw that the cosmetics shop in the Ghost Street2 got new stock. Work a bit harder; I want an eyeshadow palette.”

Without even opening her eyes, Ren Xin snapped back, “You want something? How about I give you a reality check instead?”

Ren Yi’s eyes widened in disbelief. Was this really her habitually submissive younger sister?

    Translator’s Notes

    1. pampered canary: A common Chinese metaphor (jinsīquè) for a woman who is kept in luxury by a wealthy man but lacks freedom, similar to a ‘trophy wife’ or ‘caged bird.’
    2. Ghost Street: Often refers to ‘Gui Shi’ (Ghost Markets), which traditionally operated late at night or before dawn. In post-apocalyptic settings, it typically denotes a black market or a place for illicit trading.
