Highway Survival C15
by MarineTLChapter 15: The Protagonist’s Dog
She did not feel guilty about Zhang Bowen’s death, nor did she regret pushing him into a corner step by step.
Vomiting was merely the instinctive reaction of a child from a peaceful era killing one of her own kind for the first time.
Mo Yubai retched in agony until she was on the verge of fainting, her lips pale and her hands trembling.
Cold sweat dripped from her forehead down to her chest, meeting her wildly pounding heart, yet she could clearly feel that her emotions weren’t fluctuating much.
Her only thought was that while killing a person was much easier than killing a pig, getting blood everywhere was incredibly annoying.
After about five minutes, she silently took out some purified drinking water to rinse her mouth and wash her face. Then, she pulled the Flying Feather out of the tree, calmly washed it in the river, and hid it back in her sleeve.
Starting up her Electric Tricycle, she slowly drove over to the fallen electric scooter and expressionlessly dragged the headless corpse into the bushes on the side.
She checked carefully and found only a Game Backpack. It seemed she couldn’t open it since it didn’t belong to her.
Frowning, Mo Yubai cast an Appraisal on it:
Game Backpack: A must-have item in the Survival Game. Storage capacity: 10. Can only be opened by the bound player, or placed on a Workbench to fuse with another backpack.
After fusion, half of the secondary backpack’s capacity will expand the main backpack. 15% of the items inside will be preserved, while 85% will be consumed.
Mo Yubai pondered the description. It was better than nothing; she couldn’t walk away empty-handed.
She stood up and walked over to the Workbench. By now, it had finished crafting all the plastic buckets!
She took out her own backpack as the main one, and Zhang Bowen’s backpack as the secondary one.
Magical patterns instantly flowed across the Workbench, displaying a crafting time of 45 minutes.
Mo Yubai walked back to the electric scooter, took a photo, opened the chat channel, and sent a message:
“Selling a barely used electric scooter. Clearance sale, open to any offers for trade!”
“Anything? Can I trade ten stones for it?”
“Me, me, me! Big Boss Mo, look at me! I’ll trade two Space Stones for it. I really don’t know how to ride. I upgraded my bicycle right before it broke down, but this electric scooter was too fast. I crashed it into the woods and broke it!”
“Sure, the one with the Space Stones, send me a private message.”
Mo Yubai closed the chat channel and traded with the man named Sun Youbang for the two Space Stones.
Next, she tapped the back of the Tracking Gold Coin. Space warped rapidly, the coin vanished from her hand, and she was back on her own highway.
Mo Yubai had no idea that after she logged off, the chat channel completely erupted.
“Holy crap! Big Boss Mo already dealt with him?”
“Definitely. That scammer’s profile picture has gone dark, and his scooter is being sold!”
“That was so clean and efficient. Wait, she’s a girl and she actually dared to kill someone? I thought she was just trying to scare that rumor-mongering dog.”
“He got what he deserved. That deadbeat scammer never returned my bread!”
“It’s just half a piece of stale bread. The guy who got scammed out of ten Iron Blocks isn’t even complaining, yet you’re being so petty.”
“That’s because he doesn’t care about ten Iron Blocks! But I care about my half-piece of bread!”
“Wait, don’t you guys find this terrifying? He just spread a few rumors about her without causing any real harm, yet she wasted such a precious resource just to kill him!”
“Well, too bad. Who told you to be so brainless? You believe whatever anyone says and even start empathizing with him. Just think of that half-piece of bread as tuition fee!”
“It’s not that bad. In a survival game, if you don’t kill, are you just going to wait for others to kill you? I’m sure more than one person has a Tracking Gold Coin. People must have targeted Big Boss Mo and her rich stash of resources long ago.”
“Exactly. She’s a girl with so many resources, so someone was bound to make a move on her. Her swift and decisive action this time will definitely make those people think twice.”
“But I still think it’s too cruel. Even in a survival game, girls should be gentle and forgiving. How could she take a life over a petty argument?”
“Hey, you upstairs, stop standing. The Leshan Giant Buddha[1] is offering you his seat. Come sit down.”
“Defending Mo Yubai like that, are you her dog[2]? Too bad she won’t even spare you a glance.”
Meanwhile, Mo Yubai was riding her Electric Tricycle, feeling the cold night wind. Drowsy as she was, she had no idea she had somehow gained a dog!
After traveling for about forty minutes, a reflection from the side of the road caught her eye. She looked up and saw a Silver Treasure Chest!
By now, Mo Yubai’s stamina was nearly depleted. She took five berries from her backpack to replenish her energy.
She also drank a full cup of Shuilan Tree Sap, ensuring her energy was restored to sixty percent!
Out of respect for the night and the Silver Treasure Chest, Mo Yubai put on her Night Vision Goggles and took out her Bird-head Staff.
With a sharp knife strapped to her waist and the feather hidden in her sleeve, she cautiously approached the chest.
She tossed a stone at it, but nothing happened. Raising an eyebrow, Mo Yubai threw several more stones around the area.
Finally, an almost imperceptible black thread shot toward her!
Mo Yubai dodged quickly, but she still couldn’t completely avoid the attack!
With a sharp whoosh, the black thread slammed into her Night Vision Goggles. Cold sweat instantly broke out all over Mo Yubai’s body!
A wave of lingering fear washed over her. Thank goodness she had put on the Night Vision Goggles out of caution!
She ripped off the Night Vision Goggles as fast as she could, throwing them aside along with the black thread, and without hesitation, she flung the hidden feather from her sleeve at the target.
With a sharp crack, the Night Vision Goggles and the black thread were instantly sliced in two!
Mo Yubai didn’t let her guard down. She pulled out a flashlight from her backpack and shone it on the severed black thread, throwing another feather at the front half of the thread.
The head of the front half was sliced off again, dissolving completely under the flashlight’s beam.
Mo Yubai let out a long breath. She picked up the feathers and the damaged Night Vision Goggles from the ground, then bent over in the flashlight’s beam to retrieve the stones she had thrown earlier.
After clearing the battlefield, she took out the broken Night Vision Goggles to inspect them closely:
Night Vision Goggles (Damaged): Allows the player to see at night. Remaining uses: — (Damaged, currently unusable). Can be repaired at a Basic Workbench!
Repair Materials: Glass x2, Iron Block x5, Cat’s Eye Shard x1.
Troublesome! A Cat’s Eye Shard is probably going to be hard to trade for.
Mo Yubai sighed and put them in her backpack. Then, she walked over to the Silver Treasure Chest and tried to lift it with a grunt!
“Ow! My back!”
Mo Yubai quickly set the Silver Treasure Chest down and clutched her strained lower back. She hadn’t expected the chest to be so heavy, weighing around two hundred pounds!
With her Night Vision Goggles broken, she frowned as she shone her flashlight into the pitch-black woods. Suddenly, she thought of a great solution!
She took some hemp rope from her backpack, tied the Silver Treasure Chest securely, and then tied several lengths of rope together to connect it to the tricycle parked on the highway.
Mo Yubai turned the key to start the tricycle, shifted into first gear, and accelerated. Sure enough, the Silver Treasure Chest was dragged onto the highway!
She turned the tricycle around so the headlight shone directly on the Silver Treasure Chest. Coiling up the hemp rope along the way, she walked back to the chest.
To prevent any fast, small monsters from leaping out of the chest before she could react, Mo Yubai gripped her picnic blanket tightly in her hand.

1. Leshan Giant Buddha: A famous, massive stone statue of Maitreya Buddha carved into a cliffside in Sichuan, China. In Chinese internet slang, telling someone that the Leshan Giant Buddha should give up his seat to them is a sarcastic way to mock someone for acting excessively self-righteous, saintly, or moralistic. ↩
2. dog: In Chinese internet culture, “dog” (often related to tiangou or “licking dog”) is common slang for a blindly loyal follower, fan, or “simp” who defends or pursues someone without receiving any affection or recognition in return. ↩
