Highway Survival C19
by MarineTLChapter 19: The Unlucky Kid
Standing at the door was a handsome female robot dressed in a black butler suit.
She had a tall, slender figure, her silvery-white hair swept up, and a cool, heroic countenance. Bowing slightly, she performed a butler’s salute to Mo Yubai.
“Hello, distinguished Ms. Mo. I am your exclusive butler, A1. How may I be of service?
Do you have an itinerary for tomorrow? I will plan accordingly and provide full service throughout.”
Taking in this pleasing sight, Mo Yubai gave her a silent thumbs-up.
“Hello, A1. Thank you for your thoughtfulness, but I still need to think over my schedule for tomorrow. I’ll let you know in a bit.
Also, what about the robot that brought us in earlier? Why the change?”
“Understood, Ms. Mo. You may contact me at any time once you have decided, and I will prepare a plan. As for the robot that brought you in, it was a standard model.
Furthermore, being of a different gender, its service would naturally not be as meticulous as mine. That is why I have taken over to serve you, Ms. Mo.”
A1’s gentle tone seemed to carry a unique charm.
“I see. A1, why don’t you introduce the suite’s layout to us?” Mo Yubai said with a light chuckle, her eyes narrowing slightly with interest.
“Certainly, Ms. Mo.” A1 began her introduction with calm composure, seemingly not noticing Mo Yubai’s gaze at all.
“This is the master bedroom, where I have already prepared a change of clothes for you. These two are the guest bedrooms, which also contain wardrobes and smart mattresses.”
“This wall is rather special. By inputting a command, it can become transparent, allowing you to see the scenery outside.”
“This is the holographic gaming pod, where you can enjoy some entertainment. And here is the pool…”
It took A1 about ten minutes to finish her explanation. After confirming tomorrow’s itinerary with Mo Yubai, she took her leave.
“Awesome! Sister Mo, the midnight snacks are here! Oh my god… they really are micro snacks!”
Mo Yubai, Zhu Ou, and the others stared at each other, utterly speechless at the exquisite dishes before them. Suddenly, Zhu Ou couldn’t help but burst out laughing.
“Hahaha! Sister Mo, here, let me fork a French black truffle foie gras mousse for you. Let’s have a taste of this high-class delicacy.”
Amused by Zhu Ou’s antics, Mo Yubai’s lips twitched upward. Then, she looked at the 108 dishes before her with a headache. Every single one was incredibly exquisite.
But! The portions were truly minuscule! The largest item, a colored egg, was only the size of a fist. The rest were about the size of a thumbnail!
Wen Ruyan silently skewered eight dishes at once with her fork. After tasting them, she reached a conclusion.
“Tasteless. It’s neither salty nor sweet, like they forgot the seasoning.”
Mo Yubai massaged her temples in resignation. “Forget it, let’s just make do for now. I’ll tell A1 we want Chinese food for breakfast tomorrow.”
Zhu Ou nudged Mo Yubai’s shoulder, wearing a mischievous grin.
“Sister Mo, that private butler of yours is seriously beautiful. Don’t you think so, Sister Wen?”
Wen Ruyan swallowed her food expressionlessly and nodded in agreement. “A magnificent face.”
Seeing their teasing expressions, Mo Yubai felt a headache coming on. “No talking while eating, no talking in bed[1]. Besides, which robot isn’t good-looking? Just eat.”
Zhu Ou sighed. “True. I really envy the Mechanical Race. Their creator must have sculpted them with so much care. Unlike me, who was probably just a stray splatter of mud flung from a stick[2].”
Looking at Zhu Ou’s youthful, vibrant, and pretty face, Mo Yubai said nothing, only rolling her eyes to let her figure it out herself.
Zhu Ou giggled and leaned in close. “Fine, fine. I’m actually a pretty decent splatter of mud!
Jokes aside, Sister Mo, tell me. Your Flying Feather skill is so cool, and it’s still the novice period. Who could have possibly injured you?”
Mo Yubai frowned and looked at Zhu Ou disapprovingly. “You can’t let your guard down even during the novice period. Underestimating the enemy is a fatal mistake. My arm was bitten off by a giant wolf inside a Silver Treasure Chest when I opened it.”
“Huh? Aren’t Silver Treasure Chests just filled with wild chickens? There are wolves too?”
Zhu Ou’s eyes widened slightly in surprise and confusion.
“The Silver Treasure Chest I opened contained a four-tailed dog,” Wen Ruyan added at the right moment.
Once again, Mo Yubai felt the vast disparity of life and the sheer malice of the game.
“The first Wooden Treasure Chest I opened had a wild chicken monster. But the Silver Treasure Chest I got as a system reward also had a four-tailed dog.”
“Sister Mo, what’s your Luck stat?” Zhu Ou asked, looking at Mo Yubai with deep sympathy.
“Five. What about you?”
“I have nine. Sister Wen, what about you?”
“Me? I have eight.”
Sure enough, her mental defenses crumbled in an instant. Mo Yubai asked expressionlessly, “Then when you open chests at night, is there a Chest Guardian every single time?”
“For me, there are almost no monsters in daytime chests. At night, there are indeed occasionally one or two Chest Guardians, and sometimes monsters inside the chests. But I’m not strong enough, so I rarely open chests at night.”
Zhu Ou scratched her head, delivering a humblebrag that stabbed Mo Yubai right in the heart.
“I treat night the same as day and don’t miss a single chest, but not all of them have Chest Guardians,” Wen Ruyan added, twisting the knife.
Mo Yubai silently clutched her wounded heart, wishing she didn’t have to look at these two lucky bastards anymore!
So there actually were monster-free chests during the day! And not every chest at night had a Chest Guardian!
“Is the night really that dangerous? I won’t dare to open chests at night anymore.”
Zhu Ou was a bit worried hearing this. After all, she really was just a physically weak Little Weak Chicken. Her life was far more important than any treasure chest!
Mo Yubai, however, said with deadpan calm, “It’s fine. With your luck, open them whenever you want. It won’t be a big deal.”
“Huh? Really?” Zhu Ou looked at Mo Yubai in confusion. Was her luck truly that good?
Meeting her doubtful gaze, Mo Yubai said in a dark, mournful voice, “Even during the day, I have never once encountered a chest without a monster.”
Zhu Ou blinked in disbelief, silently swallowing the consolation that her luck might not actually be that bad.
Even Wen Ruyan couldn’t help but put down her delicate silver fork, looking at Mo Yubai with a gaze that held a hint of respect.
Mo Yubai wept silently in her heart. She shouldn’t have been this unlucky, but unfortunately, she was bound to Xiao Ling.
According to the law of conservation of luck, her own luck must be terrible now. Combined with Xiao Ling, that walking disaster, the two of them together were practically covered by a dark cloud of misfortune!
“Let’s change the subject. How did you two end up being chased by those people?” Mo Yubai stiffly redirected the conversation.
Zhu Ou’s attention was instantly captured by the topic, and she said indignantly:
“I saw the message you sent, Sister Mo, and was heading to the hotel to wait for you. But on the way, that group saw me alone and surrounded me!
I couldn’t fight them all off by myself, so I threw a handful of gold coins and ran the moment they started scrambling for the money.”
“She ran a few steps, turned a corner, and knocked me down. Before I could even react, she grabbed me and started running,” Wen Ruyan deadpanned.
“I was just thinking that you’re a girl too, and since I had just escaped the tiger’s den, I couldn’t let you run straight into them!” Zhu Ou defended herself.
“But if you hadn’t kept holding my hand, I would have beaten them to the ground long ago,” Wen Ruyan continued to pierce her bubble.
“Fine, fine, I know I was wrong. I just didn’t know how strong you were, Sister Wen!” Zhu Ou sidled over from Mo Yubai’s side to snuggle up to Wen Ruyan.
“Keeping your distance is the best apology. I don’t like people getting too close to me,” Wen Ruyan said stiffly, scooting backward.
“Understood!” Zhu Ou quickly returned to Mo Yubai’s side, pressing close to her.
“What, she doesn’t want you, so you only come back to me now?” Mo Yubai teased, looking at Zhu Ou.
Translator’s Notes
1. No talking while eating, no talking in bed: A translation of the traditional Chinese idiom shí bù yán, qǐn bù yǔ (食不言,寝不语), which originates from the Analects of Confucius. It is a classic rule of etiquette advising silence during meals and rest. ↩
2. stray splatter of mud flung from a stick: This alludes to the Chinese creation myth of the goddess Nüwa. According to legend, she individually sculpted the first, elite humans from yellow clay with great care, but later grew tired and used a rope dipped in mud to flick droplets, which became ordinary humans. ↩
