Chapter 8: Arriving at the Resource Island

“Wow! Sister Mo, you’re amazing! First place in the whole server!”

“Sister Mo, are you free right now? I sent you the sneakers, helmet, and face mask. Remember to accept them.”

“Sister Mo, do you want some yogurt? I got a pack of Wangzai milk[1] from a crate. I’ll send you two cans!”

Mo Yubai didn’t know whether to laugh or cry at the barrage of messages from Zhu Ou, and quickly replied.

“Got it, sneakers, helmet, mask, and Wangzai received!

“I’m sending you two bags of pickled pepper pork skin to celebrate our friendship.”

“Wow! I absolutely love any snacks with pickled peppers or wild chili!”

Lying on her makeshift floor bed, Zhu Ou happily accepted the two bags of pickled pepper pork skin, tore open the packaging, and began slurping them down.

Seeing that things had quieted down on the other end, Mo Yubai was about to log off and trade for some resources.

To her surprise, she received another transfer from Zhu Ou: instant noodles x3, chili sauce x1, dried noodles x2, potato noodles x1, and steamed buns x4.

She typed out a question mark in confusion.

Seeing the question mark, Zhu Ou immediately replied with delight.

“Sister Mo, I noticed you didn’t have any food in your inventory screenshot. These are for you! Eat up, and don’t worry, I have more if you run out!”

Mo Yubai hadn’t expected that Zhu Ou wouldn’t realize she had only screenshotted a single slot, not her entire inventory.

Though, to be fair, she didn’t have much food in her entire inventory either.

Still, since Zhu Ou had sent her food, she couldn’t be stingy. Reciprocity was the foundation of friendship!

With that in mind, Mo Yubai sent Zhu Ou a spare blueprint for a wooden bed.

“Sister Mo, you actually have a wooden bed blueprint! And you’re just giving it to me? You’re way too nice!”

Staring at the blueprint Mo Yubai had sent, Zhu Ou sat bolt upright from her quilt and immediately unleashed a torrent of enthusiastic flattery.

“Sister Mo, you are my goddess! This road is so hard that I toss and turn and can never get comfortable. Having a bed is going to be pure bliss!

“Plus, I was just complaining about getting so much wood that I couldn’t use for upgrades. Now I can use it all up!”

Mo Yubai pinched the bridge of her nose at the exaggerated messages and replied:

“I’m glad you like it. I’ll gather the rubber as quickly as possible tomorrow so I don’t hold up your upgrade.”

Zhu Ou wasn’t in any rush, replying nonchalantly:

“Oh, don’t worry about it, Sister Mo. I’m still a long way off anyway. By the way, do you need a machete?

“I got three of them from crates, so I can give you one.”

“Sure, send it over. I got a sharp knife from a crate, so we can trade.”

“Sister Mo! Sister Mo! Do you need sanitary pads? I got a ton of them, I can share three packs with you!”

Mo Yubai accepted the pads with a wry smile, thinking to herself that this girl really loved to share.

“I received the pads. Don’t send me any more resources for now. Don’t worry, if I’m short on anything, I’ll definitely let you know right away.”

Only after reading this message did Zhu Ou reluctantly suppress the urge to keep sending Sister Mo more items.

However, she didn’t close their chat window immediately, instead starting to chat about interesting things happening on the highway.

Before long, it was already half past two in the morning.

After saying goodbye to Zhu Ou, Mo Yubai stood up and packed away her workbench. Looking at the completed wooden double bed, a satisfied smile spread across her face.

She gathered the bedding she had been lying on, placed the double bed in the middle of the tent, laid the quilt over it, and tidied up her sleeping area.

Mo Yubai dove into the soft bedding and quickly drifted off into a sweet, peaceful sleep.

The next morning, Mo Yubai packed up her tent, organized her inventory, and after eating breakfast, hopped onto her beloved little tricycle.

She took out the Resource Island Teleportation Coin and set off!

Standing on a reef by the sandy beach, Mo Yubai gazed into the distance. She realized the island was quite large, at least, she couldn’t see the end of it. It was definitely not one of those mini-islets.

She hopped down from the reef, gripping the Bird-head Staff tightly. She scanned her surroundings warily, only to see a line of crabs scuttling sideways right across the tops of her shoes.

After the crabs left behind their toll, Mo Yubai walked toward the plump, squat blue tree ahead.

About ten paces away from the tree, she cautiously tossed one of the small crabs she had just collected.

With a soft splat, the little crab hit the blue tree, rolled onto the ground, and quickly buried itself in the sand to escape.

Her muscles tensed, Mo Yubai crept quietly toward the blue tree.

She gripped the Bird-head Staff, poised like a sword ready to be drawn.

Only when she actually reached the blue tree did Mo Yubai suddenly remember the One-Click Game Creature Identifier she had bought yesterday!

She scratched her head sheepishly and immediately opened the identifier to scan it.

Once she read the description, she let out a sigh of relief. She had drinking water!

(Shuilan Tree: A common tree species on the Elven Continent. It has no magical fluctuations and usually grows in the wild, appearing individually.

The tree trunk contains a large amount of water. The water is sweet and delicious, and can be drunk directly.)

Mo Yubai immediately took out three plastic basins, three wooden buckets, and the empty cat-shaped plastic bottle she had finished drinking from this morning from her inventory.

With everything ready, she pulled out her sharp knife and sliced into the bark!

With a soft squirt, clear water flowed from the cut. Mo Yubai quickly used the basins and buckets to catch the water in turn.

After catching the water for a little over half an hour, the plastic bottle, the three wooden buckets, and two of the plastic basins were full. The last plastic basin was only half-filled when the water stopped flowing.

Mo Yubai stepped forward and squeezed the bark, and the little blue tree sputtered out a bit more water.

After squeezing it like this for about five minutes, the little blue tree was completely drained. Not a single drop was left, and the entire tree looked shriveled and pitiful.

Mo Yubai put away the last plastic basin and looked away guiltily. Unable to bear looking at the pitiful little blue tree any longer, she strolled further inland.

After walking for about ten minutes, Mo Yubai discovered a patch of wild green onions. Delighted, she walked over and pinched a tender stalk to identify it.

(Fresh Wild Green Onion: Non-toxic, delicious flavor, edible.)

Seeing the result, Mo Yubai rolled up her sleeves, threw herself into the task, and began pulling up the green onions with all her might!

After about half an hour of harvesting, the surrounding wild green onions were completely cleared out.

She massaged her sore muscles, aching from bending over for so long, then took out some pain-relieving ointment to rub onto her swollen arm from yesterday.

By now, her arm had almost returned to normal, with only a lingering hint of pain.

Once she applied the ointment, even that slight ache vanished. The game-provided ointment was certainly effective.

She opened her backpack to check her harvest from the past half hour: Wild Green Onions x48. Nodding in satisfaction, she set off again in high spirits.

She kept using her appraisal skill along the way, picking every edible berry she found and stuffing them into her backpack. She even discovered a cluster of wild grapes growing along the edge of a cliff.

Mo Yubai took a picnic blanket from her backpack to wrap the harvest, then tied a hemp rope around her waist.

After securing the other end of the rope to a sturdy tree, she carefully began harvesting the grapes along the cliff edge.

Once she finished picking all the ripe grapes, she left the small, green ones behind. It was always best to leave a little leeway and give others a chance to get by[2].

Just as she wrapped the grapes in the picnic blanket and prepared to put them into her backpack, she felt a sudden tug on her pant leg.

    Translator’s Notes

    1. Wangzai milk: Wangzai (Wang Wang) Milk is a popular, sweet, condensed-milk-style beverage in China. It is highly recognizable by its red can featuring a cartoon boy mascot and is often associated with childhood nostalgia.

    2. leave a little leeway and give others a chance to get by: This phrase references the Chinese idiom “leave a line in your dealings, so you can meet again later” (做人留一线,日后好相见). It reflects a cultural philosophy of moderation, advising against taking all resources or pushing situations to extremes, to allow others a way to survive.
