Ren Xin explained the conditions she had negotiated to everyone.
“I truly feel for you, aunties. At your age, you’re still working on the front lines, laboring in this sweltering heat every day. Your bodies won’t be able to take it forever. We can bring glory to our country just as well by relying on our wisdom, and we can prove our own self-worth in the process…”
After her impassioned speech, the older women were moved to tears. Finally, someone understood them. They were now willing to charge into battle for Little Leader Ren, ready to strike wherever she pointed.
That was more like it. As long as everyone was obedient, Ren Xin’s life would be easy.
Book Spirit Number One couldn’t stand it anymore. “You really don’t do a single honest thing, do you!”
Hmph!
Once they moved to their new workspace, the other Sent-down Youth realized that Ren Xin and Fan Zhili were no longer the people they used to be. They all began enthusiastically trying to get on their good side.
They hoped the two would lead them toward realizing their own “ideal values.”
Ren Xin thought about it and figured she could probably squeeze a little more utility out of this group of useless underachievers.
So, Ren Xin told them to keep an eye out for ingredients unique to Qiong Province. “Whenever you find something new, as long as it’s edible, bring it to me. I’ll trade you items based on its value. If it’s something truly useful, I’ll recommend you for a position in the research and development department later on.”
Once she finished painting this grand vision, everyone was filled with gratitude toward Ren Xin.
They stopped pestering her for promotions. Fan Zhili had been prepared to be ostracized by their peers, but Ren Xin had turned the situation around with just a few words, leaving everyone feeling thankful instead.
So impressive—she really needed to learn from her.
“You haven’t lived long enough; there are many things you still need to experience. Just listen to me, and slowly, you’ll have everything you want.”
Fan Zhili stubbornly declared that she would definitely be obedient. In the future, if Ren Xin told her to kill someone, she wouldn’t even ask why!
That was the spirit.
While Ren Xin was getting along swimmingly, things weren’t going quite so well for the Ren Family.
Ever since Ren Lili arrived at her Sent-down Youth station, she had been dissatisfied with everything. She spent every day crying about wanting to go home, and the constant wind and sand drove her to the brink of a breakdown.
Taking advantage of a break, she went to complain to Father Ren and Mother Ren. “I really can’t take it anymore. The youths at our station aren’t friendly at all. They even steal my food! They think I don’t know, but when I confronted them, they just told me to either cook for myself or shut up and deal with it…”
Mother Ren’s heart ached for her, but their current situation was also difficult. As newcomers, they were being marginalized by everyone, making every step a struggle.
Father Ren had already begun to resent this daughter. He said crossly, “You have no brains. we spoiled you too much, leaving you unable to do anything right. Whoever marries you in the future will be cursed with bad luck. I’m not allowing you to run over here so frequently anymore. Just stay there and work hard…”
Ren Lili wailed at the top of her lungs. This father of hers must have been replaced by an impostor; how could he speak to her like that?
Mother Ren was also powerless. They had lost half their money on the train, and the remaining cash and coupons were barely enough to get by. She wanted to help her younger daughter, but she truly lacked the means.
She could only try her best to comfort her. “Just endure a bit longer. Life will get better.”
Ren Lili refused to accept this. She stormed out in a fit of rage, her heart full of grievances, only to suddenly collide into a man’s chest.
The man was Xu Lei, a ruthless character who was known for being a real piece of work—thieving and looting were all in a day’s work for him. This collision, however, made him take an interest in Ren Lili, and he immediately began a fervent pursuit.
Ren Lili had never experienced such attention before. Everything Xu Lei did satisfied her romantic fantasies, and the two of them were soon together.
The people at the Sent-down Youth station knew exactly what kind of man he was, but no one warned Ren Lili. After all, she seemed perfectly willing and deeply infatuated. Who wanted to play the villain?
If they ended up being targeted by Xu Lei in retaliation, the loss would far outweigh any gain.
