Just as Ren Xin and Mother Ren were heading out, they bumped into the mother and daughter from next door, who were also on their way out.
The woman across from them was dark and gaunt, looking like a walking skeleton. The female lead, Zhang Qingmei, was sizing up Ren Xin and her mother. Judging by the disdainful look in her eyes, she had likely already been reborn.
Curious, Ren Xin asked Book Spirit Number One, “Does the female lead have some kind of support for her luck?”
“She does. Do you see that bracelet she’s wearing?”
“I see it. Is that the tool for gathering luck?”
“Yup. On the surface, it absorbs the luck of others to provide for the host, but in reality, it’s for the evil spirit slumbering inside the bracelet. There are very few systems left like me—professional and capable of providing emotional value. It’s a pity I fell into the hands of someone who doesn’t appreciate me. A pearl cast before swine, fine grain fed to a mountain hog1, oh woe is me…”
Ren Xin: “…” Since when did this system become so annoying?
“Because I’ve studied ‘Madness Literature2.’ From now on, I will no longer trouble myself; I choose to attack others instead.”
The target of that attack was a bit obvious!
A confrontation was imminent. Across from them, Zhang Qingmei’s mother greeted Mother Ren with a smile that was thirty percent bitter, fifty percent frail, and twenty percent awkward.
“Sister Ren, taking your daughter out too, I see? Oh, listen to me ask such a silly thing. My girl is grown now, and the elders in our family dote on her. They’re thinking of sending her to learn a craft from a seamstress in town. That way, when she marries later, she’ll have a skill to put food on the table, right?”
Mother Ren replied with a fake smile of her own, “Well, isn’t that wonderful? Your family has come into money then? You can actually afford to send your daughter to learn needlework. I suppose that means you won’t be coming to our stall to buy those cheap offals3 anymore. Fine then, I’ll tell my husband not to set any aside for you in the future.”
Zhang Qingmei’s mother scrambled to say something, but Mother Ren cut her off with sharp, barbed words. “Your daughter really is a beauty. I wonder how many layers of the master seamstress’s skill she’ll actually manage to learn. Didn’t I hear earlier that you were looking for a match for her? What happened? No one caught your eye?”
The village women passing by immediately stopped in their tracks to listen to the gossip as soon as they heard talk of marriage.
Zhang Qingmei huffed and retorted directly, “What business is it of yours? You’re worrying about things that don’t concern you. You’re just a neighbor; aren’t you overstepping your bounds?”
Mother Ren didn’t get angry. She continued to chuckle. “Qingmei, your temper is nothing like your mother’s. Your mother is the type who’d throw away her dignity just to gain a small advantage. We’re just joking around, and here you are losing your temper. That won’t do…”
There was no room for Ren Xin to intervene. She happily watched her mother dominate the field before finally being pulled away from the scene.
Ren Xin looked back at the mother and daughter. Both of their faces were ashen. It looked like Zhang Qingmei’s mother had pinched her, only to be pushed away by the girl.
Mother Ren chatted with the women nearby, her words dripping with disdain for the Zhang mother and daughter.
“I just can’t stand their pathetic act. That family has taken so much advantage of our meat stall; that whole family is a bunch of leeches.”
“You’re telling me! Just the other day, my kid caught a small fish down by the riverbank. That old lady had the nerve to claim she saw it first and snatched it right out of the child’s hands. Qingmei’s mother was quick to apologize, so I thought I’d let it go since it wasn’t worth much anyway. But the more she talked, the more out of line she got. By the end, she made it sound like my family was the one being greedy over a tiny fish…”
Others chimed in, listing the family’s faults. Ren Xin followed behind, idly twirling a stalk of foxtail grass. The village’s intelligence network was truly a force to be reckoned with!
“Speaking ill of others brings a system joy. I’ve learned another new thing! Just you wait, Host—when I return to my peak, I shall be an even more annoying system!!”
Ren Xin: “…” It can actually get more annoying?
Translator’s Notes
A pearl cast before swine, fine grain fed to a mountain hog: A combination of the idiom ‘a pearl cast before swine’ (明珠暗投) and ‘fine grain fed to a mountain hog’ (细糠喂了山猪), both used to describe a situation where something precious is given to someone who cannot appreciate its value. ↩︎
Madness Literature: Refers to ‘Fengkua Wenxue’ (疯感文学), a Chinese internet subculture and writing style characterized by chaotic, emotionally unhinged, and nonsensical venting used as a humorous defense mechanism against social pressure. ↩︎
offals: In historical Chinese contexts, animal entrails (offal) were considered the cheapest parts of the animal, often the only meat affordable for poor families, making Mother Ren’s comment a direct jab at their social standing. ↩︎
