by MarineTLChapter 129: The Doomsday Martyr – 12
Ren Xin never asked Wen Ci exactly what he did for a living, just as Wen Ci never asked why Ren Xin never lifted a finger yet never lacked food or drink.
The two of them maintained a healthy and positive relationship.
Book Spirit Number One: “Where exactly do you see ‘healthy’ in this?”
“We exercise regularly, encourage each other, and are honest with one another… See how healthy that is?”
Book Spirit Number One: “…”
Huhu’s weight had soared to over two hundred pounds. Although Ren Xin was disgusted by it, the fat tiger was very satisfied with her physique. As for the psychological trauma, Ren Xin felt she had probably faked it just to swindle her out of food and water.
Calculating the days, the zombie tide was about to begin. Ren Xin was already prepared to die a heroic death. After all, she had already slept with her man, abandoned the mission, and had nothing left to miss here.
Unexpectedly, while she was lost in thought, the door was slammed open—literally slammed. With a loud bang, several tall men blocked the doorway. One of them was supporting an injured Wen Ci, who gave Ren Xin a weak smile.
“It looks like I’m going to have to trouble you!”
Ren Xin didn’t want to sign for this “trouble” at all, but the group didn’t give her a chance to refuse. They helped Wen Ci onto the bed, laid him down, and then left as quiet as mice, never sparing Ren Xin a single glance throughout the process.
Wen Ci’s wound was on his abdomen. Ren Xin stripped off his clothes and then counted his abs. Fortunately, they were all still there, and his face wasn’t injured. What a relief!
Wen Ci: “…”
Ren Xin explained considerately, “I was just afraid your value had depreciated. See how much I care about you?”
Wen Ci said helplessly, “Could you help me get a glass of water?”
Ren Xin filled the glass and then sat by the bed, scrutinizing him closely.
Wen Ci looked back at her, somewhat bewildered.
“Is there something wrong with me?”
“Not really. I just want to know how you got hurt.”
“It was a mission. I can’t disclose the details.”
Tsk tsk…
Ren Xin asked with feigned concern, “What do you want to eat tonight?”
“Someone will be coming by to deliver food later. You don’t need to go out.”
An hour later…
The patient needed to use the bathroom. Fortunately, the small room had a simple restroom. Ren Xin watched him move slowly on his own with an air of great virtue.
Wen Ci tried to awaken Ren Xin’s conscience. “Aren’t you going to give me a hand?”
Ren Xin refused. “That would shatter the rose-colored filter I have for you. Your value would depreciate even further.”
Book Spirit Number One: “Host, do you know the difference between you and a heartless flirt?”
“I’m prettier?”
“No, the difference is that you’re even less human!”
That was fair. She felt there were no benefits to being human at all—so many laws and morals to follow, and most importantly, humans were incredibly poor!
Wen Ci rested for two days, and Ren Xin hitched a ride on his meals for those two days. His wound actually healed; Wen Ci explained that because he was an ability user, his recovery capabilities were very powerful.
The Ginseng felt a bit envious.
Wen Ci was summoned; there was an emergency mission.
He stood at the door, not opening it for a long time.
As if after a long period of deep deliberation, he spoke slowly. “Before I met you, I had long since prepared myself for death. I lived every day as if it were my last. But after meeting you, I want to live. Coming back every night and holding you in my arms is a happiness I haven’t felt in a long time. I like you very much, Ren Xin. I won’t ask where you came from or what your background is, but you must promise me that you are harmless to this sanctuary.”
Ren Xin nodded solemnly. “I have never harbored any ill will!”
Wen Ci breathed a sigh of relief and asked again, “Then, do you want to be with me?”
Ren Xin shook her head in refusal, offering a perfunctory excuse: “Let’s talk about us when world peace is restored!”
Wen Ci gave Ren Xin a regretful look before finally turning to leave.
Ren Xin carefully reviewed all her actions. Where had she slipped up? To think someone had found a flaw in her act—this was an insult to a Ginseng’s intelligence.
Book Spirit Number One: “Stop thinking about it. The zombies are coming anyway; you were going to die regardless.”
Now, why did that sound so unpleasant?
