Highway Survival C42
by MarineTLChapter 42: Extreme Pursuit
Mo Yubai felt a warmth in her heart as she read their messages. To make two life-and-death friends in a place like this was truly a blessing.
“Ou Ou, don’t rush when opening chests, be careful. Little Wen, I’ve sent the Tracking Gold Coin over. Get ready and come straight to my side. I still need eleven more gold coins, so one more or one less won’t make much of a difference.”
After sending the message, Mo Yubai exited the small group chat to prevent Wen Ruyan from refusing again, and turned to the other players on her friend list for help.
Soon, many people responded to her trade offer of forty basic materials for one Tracking Gold Coin.
First, she traded thirty sanitary pads and a hundred units of wood with Yang Yangyang for four Tracking Gold Coins.
Then, she traded forty stones and eighty Iron Blocks with Zhao Dafu for three Tracking Gold Coins.
The remaining four Tracking Gold Coins were acquired in bits and pieces from various other friends.
By now, the moon hung high in the sky. Mo Yubai smiled as she looked at Wen Ruyan, who had just arrived by her side, and handed her a longsword.
“Do you know how to use it?”
Wen Ruyan raised an eyebrow and took the sword. With a series of leaps and bounds, she danced with the blade like a soaring dragon. Every movement flowed like water, and wherever the tip of her sword pointed, a domineering aura flared.
Mo Yubai’s eyes instantly turned into stars. So cool! This was exactly how she had imagined herself wielding a sword!
Wen Ruyan reversed her grip to sheathe the sword, praising, “A fine blade!”
Mo Yubai eagerly scurried over to Wen Ruyan. “Little Wen, your swordsmanship is amazing!
How did you practice? Teach me.”
A trace of nostalgia flashed in Wen Ruyan’s eyes as she gently caressed the blade. “My grandmother used to be a bandit chief. Later, she took my grandfather with her to join the army and fight in the war. She was truly a master of all kinds of martial arts. My parents died when I was young, so my grandmother raised me.”
Hearing this, Mo Yubai felt apologetic. She looked at Wen Ruyan’s lonely figure in dismay, not expecting to have accidentally touched upon a painful subject.
Seeing her expression, Wen Ruyan laughed instead, looking quite relaxed. “Haha, it’s fine, Teacher Mo. Those things happened a long time ago. I’ve almost forgotten them, so how could I still be sad? Besides, my swordsmanship with a longsword is just for show. What I’m actually best at is the greatsword. Sweeping strikes and making heavy weapons feel light[1], now that’s truly satisfying!”
Looking at the carefree smile on Wen Ruyan’s face, Mo Yubai sighed inwardly. The loss of a loved one was like a lifelong, continuous drizzle. How could anyone truly forget?
“Your specialty is the greatsword? I happen to have one here. Do you want to try it?”
Upon hearing this, Wen Ruyan’s usually calm expression instantly lit up with excitement. “Bring it out, let me see.”
With a smile, Mo Yubai took the newly forged greatsword from the forging table and handed it to Wen Ruyan.
Wen Ruyan took the greatsword with both hands and examined it closely. The sword was pitch-black like ink, carved with ancient, simple patterns. Its tip was polished to a razor-sharp edge, as if constantly waiting to pierce through the flesh and blood of enemies!
She gripped it tightly with both hands and swung the greatsword. The sword energy surged, fierce and unstoppable!
Once everything was ready, Mo Yubai had Wen Ruyan store her own car away. They would set off in Mo Yubai’s battle-damaged Pickled Pepper Fish Head to pursue their targets.
For one thing, her car was faster, allowing them to easily catch up to those level two and level three small vehicles.
For another, since her Pickled Pepper Fish Head was already damaged from the crash anyway, they might as well protect Little Wen’s car from getting damaged.
She tapped on the Tracking Gold Coin and selected the avatar of the male player who had fled earlier. The highway began to merge slowly.
The burly man in blue had parked his vehicle by the roadside and was sitting in front of a campfire. He was in the group chat, viciously cursing Mo Yubai for being ruthless and destined to never find a man, when the Pickled Pepper Fish Head suddenly materialized right in front of him. He instantly wished he were dead.
He scrambled frantically toward his vehicle, only to see a person with a wolf cut step out of the Pickled Pepper Fish Head and split his tricycle in half with a single sword strike!
He was so terrified that he wet his pants on the spot. Mo Yubai immediately smelled the stench of urine in the air. Grimacing, she held her breath, wanting to end him with a single strike!
Sensing Mo Yubai’s murderous intent, the man instantly fell to his knees and began to kowtow frantically.
“Boss Mo, don’t kill me! Don’t kill me! I’ll give you all the resources in my backpack. I know there are others plotting against you. As long as you spare me, I’ll tell you everything!”
Mo Yubai shot Wen Ruyan a look. Wen Ruyan instantly understood Teacher Mo’s intention and, suppressing her disgust, began to put on an act.
Wen Ruyan stepped forward, blocking Mo Yubai as if she wanted to snatch the resources for herself. “If you take out all the resources in your backpack and give them to me, I’ll make Mo Yubai spare your life. How about it?”
Hearing this, the man looked up at Mo Yubai in pleasant surprise. Mo Yubai pretended to be reluctant, saying angrily, “I deserve a share of the resources too! How can you keep them all to yourself?”
Mimicking Zhu Ou’s usual cheeky attitude, Wen Ruyan provoked her, “Didn’t you say you only wanted to know who was targeting you? You get the information, I get the resources. It’s only fair.”
Mo Yubai seemed speechless. She could only glare angrily at the man. “How annoying! Hurry up and tell me who’s targeting me, then give her the resources!”
Watching the two of them bicker, the man maintained a respectful and humble expression, but sneered inwardly.
No matter how strong they are, they’re still just women. Nothing but fake friends. We men are different; brotherhood is everything!
“You must promise that you won’t kill me after I give you the resources and information, or else you’ll never escape the Survival Game!”
Mo Yubai rolled her eyes. “I promise I won’t kill you once you hand over the resources. Happy?”
Wen Ruyan also gave a gentle smile. “Don’t worry, I’ll protect you. I won’t let her kill you.”
Seeing the smiles of these two beautiful women, the man immediately grew smug again.
Are they smiling at me like that because they’ve taken a liking to me?
But there’s no way I’d accept a tomboy. Who would like a woman who’s that strong?
Then again, I can play along for now, deal with them, and trick them out of their resources.
After hearing the names of the people supposedly plotting against her from the man, Mo Yubai breathed a sigh of relief. Fortunately, they were all from his group chat. She didn’t even need to verify anything; she could just kill them all and be done with it.
Wen Ruyan took the resources the man produced and asked flatly, “Is this all of it?”
The man looked as if he had been insulted. His face turned red as he roared, “We men never lie! A man’s word is his bond[2]!”
Wen Ruyan let out a sarcastic smile. With a swing of her greatsword, he was instantly sliced in two, the smugness of his manhood still frozen on his face as he died.
“I only said I wouldn’t let Teacher Mo kill you. I never said I wouldn’t kill you myself.”
Mo Yubai cast a disgusted look at the man’s so-called “all resources.” “Little Wen, merge his backpack with yours. He definitely didn’t give you everything. Merging them should yield some more resources.”
Wen Ruyan did not stand on ceremony. She put away the resources and the backpack, nodding in agreement.
There were still over thirty people waiting in line for them. Now was not the time to be polite.
Mo Yubai cast a pitying glance at the Electric Tricycle that had been chopped in half. She stored it in her backpack, thinking she would see if she could recycle it when she had the time.
Getting back into the Pickled Pepper Fish Head, she tapped on the Tracking Gold Coin and began their relentless pursuit.
Soon, as the body count rose, the players in that group chat realized something was wrong.
Some ran to the chat channel to curse Mo Yubai, while others cried about their innocence, begging everyone to condemn her. Some traded all their life savings and resources for defensive and offensive weapons.
Still others contacted a few other ambitious, predatory men, preparing to turn the tables and kill Mo Yubai.
Translator’s Notes
1. making heavy weapons feel light: This translates the idiom ju zhong ruo qing (举重若轻), which literally means “lifting heavy things as if they were light.” In Chinese martial arts contexts, it refers to a high level of skill where a fighter wields a massive, heavy weapon with the ease, speed, and grace of a light one. ↩
2. A man’s word is his bond: The original Chinese idiom is “one spit, one nail” (一口唾沫一个钉, yi kou tuomo yi ge ding), which means that once something is said, it is as permanent as a nail driven into the ground and cannot be taken back. ↩
