Chapter 218: The Phoenix Man Who Soared Before the Apocalypse (23)

Shen Xiuyan pushed open the door in front of him. Just as he was about to call out, “Anyone here?” two zombies lunged at him head-on.

Startled, he instinctively hurled two fireballs at them.

The zombies were instantly set ablaze. Worried the house might catch fire, he followed up with two bolts of lightning, blasting the zombies out the door.

Young Master Huo looked at the charred, unrecognizable corpses on the ground and patted his chest in relief. Thank goodness Shen Xiuyan had gone in first. If it had been him, he would’ve been dead for sure.

The rural self-built house had only one floor. Once the two of them entered, it was easy to scan the entire place. Aside from the two zombies, there was no one else inside.

Shen Xiuyan paused for a moment, then said, “Let’s stay here for the night.”

Young Master Huo wasn’t as clueless as he appeared. He voiced his concern, “Are you sure? Something’s off about this village. It looks like someone deliberately lured those zombies into this house. And what kind of normal household has two elderly men of the same age living together? Plus, who leaves their door shut but unlocked?”

Shen Xiuyan nodded. “It’s fine. We’ll stay. Even if someone’s scheming, those two moves I just pulled should’ve scared them off. They won’t dare try anything. It’s more dangerous to keep traveling blind in the dark.”

“Well, alright. I’ll go call Sister-in-law.”

“No need. You stay and tidy up. I’ll go get her.”

After stepping outside, Shen Xiuyan dug out the Core Crystals from the zombies’ brains. Once he rinsed them clean, he knocked on the car door.

“Mingyue, it’s me. Come on down.”

Su Mingyue opened the door when she heard his voice.

Shen Xiuyan opened the trunk, rummaged around, and grabbed some supplies. “Let’s go inside.”

    “Is it safe in there?”

“As far as I can tell, yes.”

    “Huh?”

“Don’t worry. They won’t dare do anything.”

Su Mingyue was confused, but that didn’t stop her from trusting Shen Xiuyan.

Without a hint of doubt, she obediently followed him in.

Inside, they found Young Master Huo holding a flashlight in his mouth while busily making the bed with both hands.

When he saw them come in, he quickly removed the flashlight from his mouth and said, “There’s only one bed. You two sleep. I’ll keep watch.”

Shen Xiuyan didn’t stand on ceremony. He walked over and laid out a clean sheet and duvet cover from the supplies he’d just brought in.

“Huh? I didn’t see any of that stuff in the car,” Young Master Huo said, scratching his head, wondering if his memory was failing him.

Of course it hadn’t been in the car. Shen Xiuyan had taken it out of his spatial storage.

But he couldn’t say that. “It was there. You must’ve missed it.”

“Really?” Young Master Huo scratched his head again but didn’t press the issue.

As night fell, Shen Xiuyan gestured for Su Mingyue to get some rest. Embarrassed, she said, “I’m not tired. Why don’t I take the night watch? You guys don’t need me right now anyway. I can nap in the car during the day.”

“It’s fine. Just go to sleep.” Shen Xiuyan patted her head, then turned to Young Master Huo and said, “Wake me for the second half of the night. We’ll take turns.”

“Aww, that’s too kind.” Though he said that, his eyes were full of anticipation.

After all, he’d been exhausted from the day’s travel and was already quite sleepy.

“Still pretending?” Shen Xiuyan shot him a look.

“Hehehe.” Young Master Huo scratched his head and chuckled sheepishly.

Once the two of them fell asleep, Young Master Huo, who was staying alert, felt like time was crawling by. With no electricity, no lights, and no phone, every second dragged on endlessly.

Fortunately, the surroundings remained quiet and still, which helped him relax a bit.

The first half of the night passed peacefully. By 3 a.m., he couldn’t hold out any longer. He quietly walked over to the bed and nudged Shen Xiuyan.

Though Shen Xiuyan wasn’t a morning person, he sat up quickly.

“Time to switch? I’ll take over. Go sleep on the couch.”

“Got it.” Seeing that Shen Xiuyan wasn’t angry, Young Master Huo happily trotted over to the sofa and lay down.

He must’ve been truly exhausted, because within a minute, his breathing had already evened out.

At 5 a.m., Su Mingyue woke up. Seeing Shen Xiuyan staring at the ceiling with his eyes wide open, she quickly asked, “How long did you sleep? Want to rest a bit more? I can take over.”

“Young Master Huo woke me up at 3 a.m. I’m not sleepy at all now.”

Su Mingyue sighed. “Young Master Huo’s actually a pretty decent guy.”

Shen Xiuyan nodded. “He’s got good character. At least he’s trustworthy.”

“Grrr~” A stomach growl echoed between them.

Shen Xiuyan gently touched Su Mingyue’s belly, smiling. “Hungry?”

Su Mingyue nodded shyly. “A little.”

“I’m hungry too. Want to get up and eat something?”

    “Sure!”

The two reached an agreement and got up quietly, careful not to wake Young Master Huo.

Then Shen Xiuyan pulled out a pot, bowls, a few packs of instant noodles, canned luncheon meat, and some eggs seemingly out of nowhere.

“Just something to fill our stomachs. If we eat too well, it might raise suspicion,” Shen Xiuyan said to reassure her.

“Mm-hmm. I know. This is already great.”

Su Mingyue didn’t mind at all. To her, just having a full meal was already a blessing. She was more than content.

But Shen Xiuyan wasn’t satisfied. He felt the Apocalypse had wronged his wife. Seeing that Young Master Huo was still asleep, he quickly brought out a grilled squid skewer he’d bought before.

    “Here, eat this first.”

Actions speak louder than words. Su Mingyue beamed at him.

    “Thanks, hubby.”

“No need to thank me. You eat, I’ll cook the noodles.”

    “Okay!”

Young Master Huo woke up to the smell of instant noodles. The two had been so quiet that they didn’t disturb him at all, but the aroma was impossible to ignore.

As the scent of food drifted past his nose, he couldn’t resist any longer.

He suddenly sat up with wide eyes.

Shen Xiuyan looked over and called out, “You’re up? Come eat something.”

    “Be right there.”

Young Master Huo quickly got up and went to wash up. But when he turned on the faucet, he realized something was off.

“Where’d you guys get the water?”

Shen Xiuyan pointed to a barrel nearby. “There’s water here. Come use it.”

Still puzzled, Young Master Huo walked over. After washing up, he said, “The water’s gone. Where did you fetch it from? I’ll go get more.”

Shen Xiuyan didn’t answer. A gentle stream of water flowed from his hand, and in no time, the barrel was full again.

Young Master Huo slapped his own cheeks in disbelief.

Did he just see that right?

Was that a water-type Supernatural Ability?

Can someone really have three different abilities?

    That’s just insane…
