Chapter 203: The Phoenix Man Who Soared Before the Apocalypse (8)

Slowly, a trace of doubt rose in her eyes. Su Mingyue quietly turned her head to glance down at Shen Xiuyan. Could it be that… he’s not capable?

Otherwise, why else would they still not have done that by now???

If there’s something wrong, he should really see a doctor. Don’t avoid treatment out of embarrassment. There were still two days left before the apocalypse—there might still be time.

If they waited until the apocalypse hit and couldn’t find a doctor, then what?

Perhaps her shocked gaze had become so intense it was practically tangible, because Shen Xiuyan suddenly sensed it.

He turned his head and looked at those wide, round eyes staring at him like brass bells, and the corner of his mouth twitched.

What on earth was she thinking?

“Ahem~” He cleared his throat to remind Su Mingyue that he’d noticed.

Then, with a teasing smile, he said, “Your husband is perfectly fine. Don’t overthink it. If you keep looking at me like that, I might not be able to hold back.”

Su Mingyue’s face turned bright red. There was nothing more embarrassing than fantasizing about someone right in front of their face.

She immediately ducked her head back under the blanket. After a moment of silence, she realized something was off. This was perfectly normal—why was she the one feeling embarrassed?

She needed to be more confident and justified.

So she cautiously peeked her head out halfway again, though her flushed face remained hidden under the blanket as she pretended nothing had happened.

Gripping the edge of the blanket, she mumbled softly, “It’s been two months already. Any normal person would start thinking things.”

“Yes, yes, it’s all my fault. I’ve been too busy these past two months and ended up neglecting you,” Shen Xiuyan said, playing along.

Su Mingyue protested, “No—it’s not neglect. Neglect implies there was something to begin with. We had nothing. You’ve been ignoring me from the start.”

“Mmm, mmm, I’ve really wronged you.” Shen Xiuyan turned and pulled her into his arms with a smile. He gently patted the blanket and coaxed, “Go to sleep. I’ll lull you to sleep.”

“See? You’re brushing me off again!”

Shen Xiuyan leaned over her, staring straight into Su Mingyue’s eyes, a glint of mischief in his smile.

“You think I don’t want to? There are only two days left before the apocalypse. Don’t tempt me. If your body can’t move afterward, how will you go find your parents?”

    Su Mingyue blinked, suddenly enlightened.

Right! In the end, she’d be the one suffering.

She quickly pushed Shen Xiuyan away, turned around, and burrowed back under the blanket—all in one swift motion.

Shen Xiuyan was left momentarily stunned by her rapid retreat.

From under the blanket, her muffled voice could still be heard, “I’m asleep now…”

Shen Xiuyan couldn’t help but laugh. How could she be this adorable?

He shook his head, lay back down, and reached out to pull Su Mingyue into his arms, gently patting her. “Sleep. We’ve got a long road ahead.”

Hearing that from under the blanket, Su Mingyue’s face flushed red again.

    Sleep. She had to sleep.

If she didn’t fall asleep soon, there’d be no sleeping at all tonight.

Feeling the warmth radiating from his body, falling asleep wasn’t as hard as she’d imagined.

Soon, she drifted off into a deep slumber.

The next morning, the two of them got up early and began working on their respective tasks.

The first thing Su Mingyue did was make a phone call to have all three of their supermarkets close for three days.

Thinking of her responsibility as an employer, she thoughtfully arranged for the supermarkets to distribute some supplies to the employees.

This included rice, flour, and fresh produce.

The manager on the other end was overjoyed. He hadn’t expected three days of paid leave and gifts on top of that. He repeatedly expressed his thanks and promised to have all personnel cleared out by the afternoon.

Su Mingyue felt a little embarrassed listening to all the gratitude. After hanging up, her mood dipped slightly.

Shen Xiuyan noticed her gloominess and wrapped an arm around her shoulders, gently comforting her. “You’ve already done more than enough. If it were me, I probably wouldn’t have given out those supplies. With what you gave them, they’ll be able to eat for quite a while.”

Su Mingyue let out a long sigh. “You don’t need to comfort me. I understand. In the apocalypse, you can’t be a bleeding heart. I need to start hardening myself now.”

Shen Xiuyan looked at her in surprise. He hadn’t expected this delicate little princess, raised in a greenhouse, to think like that.

    But this was exactly right.

He smiled and praised her, “You’re absolutely right. I should learn from you.”

Su Mingyue nodded firmly and warned Shen Xiuyan, “So in the apocalypse, aside from our parents, no one else matters. We have to make sure we survive first.”

It sounded like she was also trying to reassure herself.

Shen Xiuyan reached out to ruffle her hair in silent comfort.

Since the supermarkets wouldn’t be cleared until the afternoon, the two of them split up to carry out the plan they’d discussed the day before.

Su Mingyue went to rent a warehouse several hundred square meters in size, and began collecting various seeds, trees, and poultry from the surrounding area.

Shen Xiuyan, meanwhile, went to buy vehicles and fuel.

During breakfast, Shen Xiuyan simply gave Aunt Wang a vacation.

While sipping his thick rice porridge, he said, “Aunt Wang, Mingyue and I are going on a trip soon, so I’m giving you a week off. You can pack up and head home later.”

Aunt Wang looked troubled. “Sir, I was assigned to take care of Miss. It’s not really appropriate for you to make that decision on your own.”

“Besides, if I stay home, I can still help with cleaning and chores. What’s the point of a vacation?”

Only a fool would want time off. Aunt Wang had lost her husband early in life and had only one son, who lived in B City. But he’d gotten married two years ago, and she didn’t get along with her daughter-in-law. Going back meant enduring their moods. How could that compare to the comfort of staying here?

Here, she’d watched Miss grow up. Aside from Miss, every other servant tried to curry favor with her. The food and drink she enjoyed here were things her son and daughter-in-law had never even seen. Asking her to go home and rest was the last thing she wanted.

Su Mingyue frowned slightly at those words. That comment was a bit of a slap in Shen Xiuyan’s face.

What did she mean by that? Wasn’t her husband the master of this house?

Was he not even allowed to give orders to a servant?

Su Mingyue said with a hint of displeasure in her voice, “Do as Xiuyan said. Not just you—notify everyone in the villa that they’re getting a week off.”

“But Miss, I—” Aunt Wang looked at Su Mingyue’s darkening expression and still tried to resist.

“What? Shen Xiuyan can’t give you orders, and now I can’t either?” Su Mingyue slammed her chopsticks heavily on the table and said sternly, “If you don’t want to work here anymore, just say so. There are plenty of people waiting to take your place.”

Aunt Wang flinched in fright at her tone.

It was the first time she’d ever seen Miss this angry.

She fumed inwardly, cursing Shen Xiuyan. It was all his fault that Miss was treating her like this.

But no matter how much she cursed in her heart, Aunt Wang didn’t dare show a trace of it on her face.

Instead, she forced a flattering smile. “Of course, of course. I always listen to you, Miss. I just thought I could help tidy up a bit while you’re away, so everything would be nice when you got back.”

Su Mingyue waved her hand. “No need. Just let everyone know. Have them all leave now.”

“Yes, yes.” Aunt Wang didn’t dare delay this time and immediately went to notify all the villa staff.

“Wait.” Su Mingyue sighed. After all, they’d been together for years—there were still some feelings there.

She didn’t forget to remind Aunt Wang, “I heard there’s going to be heavy rain in B City over the next few days. Travel might be difficult, so make sure to stock up on food when you get home.”

“Alright, alright. I’ll do whatever you say, Miss.” Aunt Wang smiled again. She knew Miss still cared about her. This attitude was just for show in front of the young master, so she wouldn’t seem biased.
