    Chapter 10

The person who could sign language looked at Fan Chunxiang and the child hugging together, especially since she was also a mother now, feeling an extra pang of sorrow.

Taking a child away from its mother was almost like ripping the mother’s heart out.

The police, who had briefly understood the situation, saw that the child was about to cry and explained that it was just an investigation.

If the biological parents of the child could not be found, and the child had been living with them for over a year and had become very dependent on them, they could go through the formalities to have An’an registered and obtain a household registration.

After all, the child was still young, and the child’s own wishes would be the main consideration.

Fan Chunxiang and Li Datao had changed into slightly better clothes just to go out, but these “better” clothes were still somewhat shabby compared to other clothing.

However, the child in Fan Chunxiang’s arms was dressed in new clothes, with a snack in their pocket, clearly well cared for.

If it had been someone else, the police could have reproached them, saying that they should have reported the child immediately after finding them, taking the child to the police station for proper handling.

But facing these two disabled people, they couldn’t say that. Legal knowledge wasn’t widespread, and besides, they seemed completely illiterate.

“We’ve already completed the registration here. It’s getting late now, so you can take the child home.”

Fan Chunxiang stood up, holding An’an, and with Li Datao, they both bowed to the police officers.

An’an clung tightly to his mother. At first, he really liked the feeling the place gave him, as if his whole soul had been stretched out, feeling incredibly comfortable.

But after the recent events, it was hard for him to have any good feelings about this place. He kept urging his mother to hurry up; he never wanted to come here again.

On the way home, Fan Chunxiang, worried that An’an might catch a cold, was about to take off her own coat when Li Datao handed her his coat first.

An’an was wrapped in the adult-sized coat, with only a small gap left, his head unable to peek out.

An’an, who rarely contacted the system, even started calling out to it in his mind.

    “System, can I stay here?”

250 had seen the entire process unfold and had actually expected this result from the beginning.

It didn’t interfere, in fact, it was pleased with the outcome.

After all, An’an was going to live in this world. Since he was still young, it wasn’t a problem now, but as he grew older, trouble would arise.

For example, going to kindergarten without a birth certificate or household registration would be problematic, and if they tried to handle it hastily later, it would surely delay things.

It was better to resolve the issue now while it was still early.

The most important thing was that An’an was still young. According to the power of the plot, he would definitely be able to stay with Fan Chunxiang and Li Datao, unlike in the original storyline where Li Datao had to seek help from others, spending all their savings.

250 had watched An’an grow, and had been with him longer than Fan Chunxiang had.

Having finally raised a chubby little kid, it was reluctant to let him face any family troubles, like not having enough food or warmth, and turning into a mere skeleton.

“Yes, don’t worry, your mother is still your mother.”

The system had brought An’an into this world, and in his young mind, the system seemed to be all-powerful, capable of anything.

Since the system said he could stay, he could definitely stay.

An’an, who had been on edge, finally relaxed. Wrapped in the warm coat, he unknowingly fell asleep.

Once they got home, Fan Chunxiang laid An’an on the bed while Li Datao went to the kitchen to start a fire.

Normally, the two didn’t speak to each other much, but today felt different.

In the police station, they had realized the seriousness of the situation. No matter how others comforted them, saying it was okay, their hearts still remained heavy.

Before the situation had been finalized, Li Datao didn’t even have the energy to go out and collect waste materials.

About half a month later, the police finally contacted them, confirming that they had not found any information regarding An’an’s biological parents.

There were many witnesses to Fan Chunxiang and Li Datao finding An’an, which basically ruled out the possibility that they had stolen the child.

Knowing they were both disabled and barely literate, a specialized person helped them go through the adoption procedures, and An’an’s household registration was added to their family book.

The day this was finally settled, Fan Chunxiang, unusually generous, bought fish and meat to celebrate.

They had never understood the significance of this before and thought that since they had found the child, he was naturally their own. It wasn’t until the police explained that they realized their thinking was wrong.

Now that An’an’s household registration was settled, the law officially recognized their relationship.

Children often don’t remember sorrow, and in An’an’s memory, it was just a few days of having delicious food.

The family also went out to collect waste materials, sometimes encountering setbacks or being scammed, like when they were sold soaked items.

Li Datao sometimes didn’t even notice something was wrong, but fortunately, there was the clever An’an.

As time passed, Li Datao grew more cautious. No matter how friendly someone appeared, whether they were old acquaintances or not, he would first check before loading anything onto his truck.

At first, Li Datao couldn’t bring himself to confront the customers who frequently sold him bad items, but later, after being sternly taught by his wife, he learned to be more careful.

From then on, whenever Li Datao was careless, he would think of the lesson his wife had taught him.

If he didn’t confront them, it was like losing An’an’s lollipop, or a picture book, or a big chicken leg.

Now that they were making more money, using money to make Li Datao feel bad didn’t work as well as it used to.

But An’an was different. No matter how many things Li Datao bought for him, An’an would always come over and kiss him, snuggling up and acting cute.

Since Li Datao couldn’t hear An’an call him “Dad,” An’an liked to have physical contact with him.

He would hug his father’s neck, rubbing his head against him, or lean in to kiss his father’s cheek. Even when playing outside, he would never forget to place his little hand in Li Datao’s callused palm.

Now that they were earning more money, the family meals had gotten better. But whether it was because Li Datao worked so hard or for some other reason, no matter how good the food, he still remained very thin.

Only An’an was different. Every day he was fed all sorts of delicious food, and he had gained noticeable baby fat, looking round and incredibly cute.

Soon it was the New Year again. This year, Li Datao was quite generous and bought a lot of New Year’s goods early.

Especially remembering that An’an liked fireworks, he bought a lot and hid them in the storage room, planning to surprise An’an on New Year’s Day.

They were like hardworking bees, laboring the whole year just to enjoy the sweetness of the New Year.

In the past, during the New Year, they only had each other facing each other, unable to speak, which inevitably felt a bit lonely.

Now, Fan Chunxiang heard the neighbors complaining about how much money was needed for socializing during the New Year, and sometimes she even felt a bit relieved.

The money saved from the relatives’ visits could be spent on buying a lot of things for An’an.

This year, Fan Chunxiang didn’t weave things to sell, but when she had free time, she bought wool and knitted hats, gloves, and socks for An’an.

There were other children in the alley, and An’an, who was warm-hearted and clever, was very popular. He loved to show off and would often gather with them to boast.

“My mom knitted these, they’re pretty!”

An’an held out his little hands for them to see, clearly shaking them so they could see how beautiful his gloves were.

After the other children started bragging, An’an proudly stood with his hands on his hips, beaming with pride.

At this moment, Fan Chunxiang was sitting in the yard, watching this scene with a smile in her eyes.

She often felt guilty, like her husband, for not being able to provide a better environment for this child, but every time An’an would show through his actions that those things didn’t matter to him at all.

The gloves Fan Chunxiang knitted were exactly what children liked. After An’an showed them off, the next day, a child’s parents came to her house.

They bought wool and prepared gifts, asking Fan Chunxiang to knit one for their child, who had been crying at home.

The winter sun was especially warm when it shone on her. Fan Chunxiang stood at the door, the gentle sunlight falling on her.

Hearing the neighbors’ request, Fan Chunxiang didn’t immediately agree.

Seeing how proud An’an had been showing off his gloves yesterday, she thought it was so cute, and if she agreed right away, An’an might not be able to show off tomorrow.

Just as she was about to decline, she suddenly saw a little head peek out from the room, nodding at her.

Fan Chunxiang agreed to the neighbors’ requests and, with nothing else to do, began knitting in the yard.

An’an found a stool to stand on, leaning over to look at some birds not far away.

In this cold weather, it was rare to see a few birds, not knowing what they were doing in the snow.

An’an had an unusual enthusiasm for these natural creatures.

250 looked at the snow outside and felt cold just thinking about it in the system space, but seeing how unaffected An’an was by the cold, unable to contain its curiosity, it asked:

“Just a few birds, are they really that beautiful?”
