    Chapter 25

When Shen Lihuan and You Changqing ran up to the rooftop, Wang Qingqing already had one foot stepped outside. Seeing her dangling leg, Shen Lihuan clenched her fists tightly, while You Changqing’s face turned cold and serious.

Hearing footsteps, Wang Qingqing lowered her head and looked down. Seeing that it was her classmates who had chased after her, she felt a slight sense of comfort. Besides her family, there were still people in this world who cared about her.

However, her face remained expressionless, her eyes locked onto Shen Lihuan and You Changqing without a flicker of movement. Her lifeless gaze sent a chill down their spines.

“Qingqing, if there’s something bothering you, can you talk to us about it? Are you feeling overwhelmed and just want to get some fresh air up here?”

Shen Lihuan raised a reassuring smile, trying to convince Wang Qingqing that they meant no harm, that she could relax.

“I… I’m not unhappy,” Wang Qingqing’s voice was hoarse, as if it had been squeezed out of a broken bellows. She turned her face away and added, “I don’t want fresh air. I just want to jump from here.”

“Why? Qingqing, you’re a strong girl, aren’t you? Can you tell us the reason?”

While speaking, Shen Lihuan subtly observed the layout of the rooftop, calculating how she could quickly climb over the railing and pull Wang Qingqing back.

“Aren’t we friends? Qingqing, talk to us. Maybe we can help you solve your troubles.”

Seeing her hesitation, You Changqing took a cautious step forward and reached out a hand toward her.

Wang Qingqing frowned, her lips trembling as if she wanted to speak but couldn’t. Shen Lihuan looked at her encouragingly. “Talk to us. You’re not afraid to jump off a building, so why would you be afraid to tell us the reason?”

You Changqing instinctively held her breath, watching Wang Qingqing with anticipation.

Wang Qingqing hesitated for a moment. Just as she was about to speak, she saw Teacher Chen and the principal rushing up in a panic. When they noticed Wang Qingqing straddling the railing, their faces filled with fear.

“Wang Qingqing, it’s dangerous! Come down right now! Don’t do anything foolish!” Teacher Chen was so frightened that her legs went weak. She stretched out her hand toward Wang Qingqing, her face pale. Principal Cheng spoke earnestly, “Child, you’ve only lived for sixteen short years. You still have decades of life ahead of you. Don’t give up. Think of your family. Do you want them to endure the pain of losing you?”

At the mention of her family, Wang Qingqing’s eyes finally showed a flicker of light. “It’s because of my family that I want to jump. Someone like me is just a burden.”

Teacher Chen thought it was her scolding that had pushed Wang Qingqing into despair, and she was filled with deep regret. She quickly said, “Wang Qingqing, you’re not a burden! It was just one bad exam! It was my fault for being too harsh and hurting your feelings. I apologize! Please don’t do anything reckless. If anything happens to you, how could I ever live with myself?”

Wang Qingqing gave a faint, sorrowful smile. “Teacher, it’s not your fault. I just can’t hold on anymore.”

As she spoke, tears began to stream down her face.

“My mom has stomach cancer. She needs a lot of money for surgery. Every day, I think about how to earn more money. I hand out flyers, wearing a clown costume that weighs dozens of pounds under the scorching sun. My entire back, forehead, and neck are drenched in sweat. I move bricks at construction sites, carrying bags of cement until my hands and feet are covered in blisters, my waist too sore to straighten. I work as a waitress in restaurants, serving dishes, washing plates, mopping floors, and wiping tables, enduring endless disdainful looks.”

The moment Wang Qingqing started speaking, Teacher Chen and the school leaders fell silent. They knew all too well how expensive cancer treatments were. A single illness could drag a middle-class family into financial ruin, let alone a family that was already struggling.

    It was a bottomless pit.

“I wish I could split every minute in half just to make more money. Every day, I calculate how much I can earn from each job and whether it’s enough for my mom’s medicine.

And my dad, that foolish man, works endlessly too. He goes without food, without warm clothes, just so he can make sure I eat well and stay warm at school. He tells me he has a good life at the construction site, that he lives in a luxurious room and eats huge portions of meat every day.

But one time, I missed him too much and couldn’t help but visit his site. I found out he was actually living under a bridge. His so-called ‘luxurious room’ was just a patch of ground surrounded by tattered cloth, and his meals were nothing but plain steamed buns and pickled vegetables.

Sometimes, I really envy you all. You were born into privileged families, where you have everything you could ever want. My little brother is very understanding—he’s always wanted a toy, but he knows we can’t afford it, so he never asks. I worked and saved up to buy him a small toy truck. He was really happy, but soon after, he said, ‘I can’t have this toy. We don’t have money. We can’t waste it on toys.’

At that moment, I hated that my brother wasn’t born into a wealthy family, where he could just be a carefree young master.”

Wang Qingqing wiped the tears from her face. “But none of this is the reason I want to die.”

“Do you know what happened when I went to sell my blood for money…?” Wang Qingqing choked up several times, her swollen red eyes filled with pain. “I got infected with AIDS… Do you know what AIDS means?”

Teacher Chen looked at her in disbelief, her own eyes turning red.

AIDS meant one thing—an incurable disease.

To this day, there was still no cure for AIDS.

“Everyone knows the symptoms of AIDS. I don’t want to live without dignity. And besides, our family can’t afford to treat two patients.

My mom already attempted suicide once because she felt she was a burden on us. If she finds out that her daughter got infected with an incurable disease just to earn her medical fees, how will she feel?

I can’t contribute to my family, but I can at least reduce their burden. Without my expenses, there will be more money left at home, and my mom can get her surgery sooner.”

Wang Qingqing sobbed so hard that her head ached. She wiped her tears away and forced a smile. “I’ve experienced the most genuine love in this world. That’s enough for me. My life wasn’t in vain.”

With that, she resolutely swung her other leg over the railing.

Teacher Chen and Principal Cheng screamed in terror!
