Raising Kids C151
by MarineTLChapter 151: The Real and Fake Daughters Who Were Switched at Birth – 10
Xie Hui looked at Jinjin, who was fiercely pinching his nose, scrunching up her own nose just like she used to when she was little. He sighed helplessly and reminded her:
“I can’t see the road. If I fall, it’s all three of us going down.”
“Uncomfortable, uncomfortable! Daddy was wrong!”
Only after hearing Xie Hui admit his mistake did Jinjin reluctantly let go, huffing and turning her head away.
The two little brats were getting steadier on their feet by the day, and even with two nannies and Yuan Huan watching them, it was getting harder to keep up. One second they were there, and the next—poof!—the two diaper-clad rascals had vanished who knows where.
Yuyu was much more obedient and quiet, but with a big sister constantly egging her on, her good behavior didn’t rub off on Jinjin—instead, she started getting mischievous too.
Xie Hui simply gave all the caretakers a raise, asking them to keep a closer eye on the girls. He had no intention of stifling their playful nature.
While the two little ones were glued to their cartoons, the steward dug a mud pit in the backyard just for them. Dressed in raincoats and boots, they were free to stomp around to their hearts’ content.
Xie Hui had just gotten home when two little mud monsters came running toward him. His first instinct was to dodge out of the way.
“Daddy, are you disgusted by me and Mimi?”
Jinjin’s question made Xie Hui pause. He bent down, looked seriously at the filthy little creature in front of him, and nodded solemnly.
“Yes, I’m disgusted by both you and your sister.”
With that, Xie Hui turned and walked away quickly.
A real man never looks back at his crying kids!
Jinjin puffed out her cheeks, looking a little fierce. She turned to see Yuyu following her with an innocent expression and reached out her hand.
“Hehe, Yuyu, hug.”
Then she waddled forward on her short legs and gave her sister a hug.
The two messy raincoat-clad girls hugged each other happily, not minding the dirt one bit. Watching from the second floor, Xie Hui felt his blood pressure spike.
Back in his bedroom, after changing into clean clothes, he remembered something a business partner had mentioned earlier that day. It seemed like a good time to bring it up.
The partner had been complaining that his daughter was giving him a headache—she wanted to learn everything and was good at all of it, barely leaving time to rest.
To Xie Hui, it sounded like blatant bragging.
His own two girls were still young, but it wouldn’t hurt to ask what they were interested in. He could have his assistant start scouting for good teachers early.
Yuan Huan took off the girls’ raincoats. Seeing their clothes underneath were also muddy, she gave them a bath and dressed them in clean outfits.
They sat on high stools while the nanny brought out a plate of sliced fruit.
When Xie Hui came down, he saw the apple chunks on his daughter’s plate, picked one up with a little fork, and took a bite.
“Not bad. Pretty sweet.”
No sooner had he praised it than his daughter rolled her eyes dramatically.
Yuyu, ever the peacemaker, took a piece from her own plate and gave it to her sister. She gently patted Jinjin’s arm.
“Jinjin, don’t be mad.”
After they finished the fruit, Xie Hui took them to the backyard playground and helped them onto the swings, pushing one with each hand.
“What do you want to learn in the future, Jinjin?”
“And you, Yuyu? What would you like to learn when you’re a bit older?”
Jinjin thought seriously for a moment, then turned to look at her dad and answered:
“Learn… fighting!”
Yuyu wriggled off the swing and stood on the flat path. Mimicking what she’d seen on TV, she twirled in a circle, lifted the hem of her little dress, and gave a clumsy curtsy.
“Oh? Yuyu wants to learn dancing? That’s not bad.”
“Dance~”
After getting a general idea of their interests, Xie Hui asked his assistant to start looking for suitable teachers—preferably ones with dedicated studios for dance and martial arts, and who could also offer in-home lessons.
He had already arranged for both girls to attend the same kindergarten. When they weren’t in class, one could go to dance practice, and the other to martial arts.
They were still too young to learn anything serious, but it was good to lay a foundation.
Yuan Huan had gone from feeling guilty and uneasy at first to now being at a loss for words. Although Mr. Xie rarely talked about it, everything Jinjin had, Yuyu had too.
Taking care of Jinjin was her job. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t shake the guilt.
So, she focused on teaching her own daughter more.
Young children are easily influenced before they develop independent thinking. Just one comment from someone else could sway them.
Yuan Huan didn’t want to see her daughter, after spending so much time here, start to develop unrealistic expectations.
The two little girls, however, lived in a world of pure simplicity. Jinjin sometimes complained that her sister was too clingy—she even followed her to the bathroom like a little tail.
Others might think she was genuinely annoyed, but Xie Hui saw through her tsundere act. She just didn’t want to admit she actually liked her sister.
From kindergarten to elementary and middle school, the two were always together. They had their spats, but usually made up after a good night’s sleep, arms linked and smiling again.
At first, Xie Hui thought he’d need to mediate to keep their relationship from souring. Later, he realized he was overthinking it.
By the time he got there, they were already back to normal. If he arrived too early, he’d even get scolded for being annoying.
In middle school, Xie Qianjin cut her hair short—ear-length, with a cool, aloof vibe. Her features hadn’t fully matured yet, but she already had a striking, commanding beauty.
Yuan Yu, on the other hand, was just like when she was little. She loved wearing dresses, and within the school’s dress code, she had a different one for nearly every day—pink, white, light blue.
When they graduated middle school, both girls scored top marks and got into a prestigious high school. Their birthday happened to fall right after exams.
Xie Hui decided to throw them an early birthday party at home, letting them each invite their friends.
The steward decorated the whole villa festively. Over the years, Yuyu had grown up here—sweet and well-behaved. Though not Xie Hui’s biological daughter, most of the staff were fond of her.
The party started in the afternoon, with classmates and friends from school as the main guests.
Knowing that adults might make the kids feel awkward, Xie Hui greeted their friends briefly, then tactfully retreated.
He went to his study, pulled a good book from the shelf, and asked the steward to prepare a cup of tea. Sitting by the window, he sipped his tea and turned pages leisurely, enjoying the quiet.
Xie Hui had always known how to enjoy life. He made a habit of living as comfortably as possible within his means—not just materially, but spiritually too.
Downstairs, the guests were visiting Xie Qianjin and Yuan Yu’s home for the first time. Seeing the elegant furnishings and the exquisite playground in the garden, many were envious.
Every year, Xie Hui went all out for their birthdays. This year, he even hired someone to design their dresses.
The dresses were modest, covering most of the body, with excellent tailoring and intricate embroidery.
Xie Qianjin’s dress was mostly white, embroidered with bold red roses. Her short hair and sharp features gave her a striking, confident beauty.
Yuan Yu’s dress was a soft pink, adorned with lilies. Her gentle, non-threatening looks hadn’t changed since childhood. Her long, straight black hair was braided and pinned up today, adding a touch of grace.
After the lively birthday celebration, they had dinner and cut the cake. Then everyone headed to the villa’s private theater to watch a movie.
When Xie Hui came downstairs and saw the mess, he didn’t say a word. Instead, he told the maid to prepare some sliced fruit and drinks to bring in.
To him, as long as the girls were happy on their birthday, that was all that mattered.
Inside the theater, Yuan Yu had been watching the cartoon intently. When the door opened and the maid came in, she made sure not to block anyone’s view before walking over to grab a glass of her sister’s favorite watermelon juice.
She handed it to her sister, then casually picked up a drink she liked for herself.
Her mom often told her that her sister was picky. If you gave her something she didn’t like, she might politely accept it, but she wouldn’t touch it.
Maybe some people are just born different. Yuan Yu didn’t even mind lemon juice. To her, drinks were either tasty or not—she never avoided something just because she didn’t like it.
Of course, it might also be because Yuan Yu was a little lazy.
She always remembered the things her sister liked, willing to put in the effort. But when it came to herself, as long as it wasn’t poisonous, it was good enough.
Yuan Yu had barely sat down when someone gently tugged at her sleeve.
“I want to go to the bathroom. C-could you come with me?”
Hearing this, Yuan Yu frowned, feeling a bit puzzled. She pointed toward the door and lowered her voice.
“Just go out on your own. There’ll be an auntie outside—you can ask her.”
“I… I want you to come with me. Please?”
Yuan Yu found the request a little strange, but since the girl was her sister’s friend, she stood up anyway.
“Fine.”
Once they stepped outside, Yuan Yu led her to the bathroom door and was about to leave.
“Wait, Yuan Yu…”
“What now?”
Yuan Yu had a pretty good temper, but even she was starting to think this girl was a bit much.
“Yuan Yu, you… you’ve been living here just like Xie Qianjin for all these years.”
“But she’s a proper heiress. You’re not any worse than her, not by a long shot. So why… why are you so willing to serve her, just like your nanny mom does?”
As soon as she finished speaking, Yuan Yu’s expression turned cold.
