Chapter 248: The Phoenix Man Who Soared Before the Apocalypse (54)

Shen Xiuyan thought something serious had happened. To comfort his wife, he nodded firmly. “Of course they know. And they were absolutely delighted. They really like you. Look, the lunchbox has braised chicken in it. They made it with a freshly slaughtered chicken just for us.”

Su Mingyue’s worried expression vanished in an instant. She nodded in satisfaction. “Not bad this time. You even remembered to introduce me to your parents in advance. Otherwise, I wouldn’t know what they’d think of me. Getting married without even telling them…”

Shen Xiuyan patted her shoulder reassuringly. “That was all my fault. I was too idealistic back then. But don’t worry, I’ve already explained everything to them. You don’t need to be afraid.”

    “Mm!”

“What are you two whispering about?” came Father Su’s voice.

Su Mingyue turned her head, holding the lunchbox, and said with a cheerful smile, “Nothing much. Xiuyan’s parents made us a meal, even slaughtered a fresh chicken. We’ve been starving all day. Hurry and call everyone over to eat.”

“Oh, how can we accept that?” Father Su said modestly, but his feet didn’t stop moving.

He climbed onto the bus and shouted, “Old Huo, come down and eat! Xiuyan’s parents specially slaughtered a chicken for me! Just cooked, still hot!”

Goodness, with that shout, everyone on the bus knew.

His desire to show off was obvious to all.

So what if he ran into some easygoing in-laws?

Was it really worth showing off this much?

Well… actually, it kind of was.

In times like these, someone who’s still willing to slaughter a chicken for their in-laws must be a genuinely kind and generous soul.

Why does Old Su always get all the good luck?

Father Su’s group ate with such joy and satisfaction, while the rest of the people on the bus were still being transferred into the village in hardship.

Watching the three off-road vehicles going back and forth, Shen Xiuyan deeply regretted not bringing out a few more cars.

At this rate, who knew how long it would take to finish the transfer?

By the time they finished eating and had a comfortable nap, the last round of transport finally returned.

All the supplies from the bus had been moved. Now they just needed to transport the people.

Shen Xiuyan closed the bus door and turned around. “Let’s leave the bus here for now. There aren’t many people, so there’s no need to widen the road. Using this spot as a transfer point works just fine. At least it’s safe.”

The vehicle swayed along the mountain road. In the distance, the village slowly came into view.

As they got closer, Su Mingyue nervously gripped Shen Xiuyan’s hand.

He turned to look at her and saw her whole body starting to stiffen.

He patted her hand gently to comfort her, then leaned in and whispered, “It’s okay. My parents are really easy to get along with. You don’t have to be nervous.”

“I don’t want to be, but I can’t help it,” Su Mingyue mumbled, cutting him off. “Don’t talk. Let me calm down for a bit.”

Shen Xiuyan couldn’t help but chuckle.

With how tense she looked, calming down wasn’t going to be that easy.

The off-road vehicle didn’t stop inside the village but drove straight to the Shen Family’s courtyard gate.

Once they got out, even Father Su—who had negotiated billion-dollar deals—looked a little uneasy.

Shen Xiuyan gave instructions. “A Lei, you, Young Master Huo, and A Cai handle the arrangements for everyone. Also, register their skills in advance. Everyone here has to work. We don’t want freeloaders.”

“Of course. I’ll take care of it right away.” Brother Lei nodded and turned to discuss future plans with the other two.

The Shen Family had already heard the commotion outside and came rushing out to greet them.

Mother Shen beamed with joy. “This must be Mingyue, right? Oh my, you’re so beautiful, like a fairy! I don’t know what kind of dumb luck my son had to marry someone like you.”

Su Mingyue blushed at the praise and said softly, “Mom, it’s nice to meet you.”

“Good, good, good.” The more Mother Shen looked at her daughter-in-law, the more she liked her. So pretty—just imagine how good their children would look.

Not to be outdone, Mother Su immediately chimed in, “Oh, don’t say that. Xiuyan is incredibly talented. And he’s handsome too. He and our Mingyue are a perfect match.”

Mother Shen looked over. “You must be the in-law. Goodness, you look so young!”

Who doesn’t like hearing sweet words? Mother Su smiled brightly. “Oh, not at all. You look just as young.”

Father Shen stepped in at the right moment. “Come on, let’s all go inside.”

Mother Shen chuckled sheepishly. “Yes, yes, look at me chatting away at the door. Let’s go in and rest.”

“Come, come, come. Sister, let’s talk as we walk.” Mother Su linked arms with Mother Shen, looking so close that anyone watching would think they were long-lost sisters.

Anyone who didn’t know better would assume they were actual siblings.

Inside, Shen Xiuyan gave a brief introduction of both families.

Father Shen said apologetically, “In-laws, I’m really sorry. Such a big event, and Xiuyan didn’t even tell us. We only just found out he got married.”

Father Su waved it off. “Totally understandable. It’s all for the kids. I heard about it. Just when he was about to tell you, the Apocalypse hit. The timing couldn’t have been worse.”

Father Shen sighed, his face full of regret. “I know he did it for his sister’s sake, but now that she’s in high school, what’s the point…”

Father Su offered comfort. “It’ll get better. Everything will be okay.”

Watching the two of them get all sentimental, Shen Xiuyan shook his head helplessly. “Dad, don’t worry. As long as we can build this base, Little Sis can still go to school like normal.”

“Huh?” Two voices rang out at once.

One was Father Shen, full of excitement.

The other was Shen Xiumei, full of exasperation. Even during the Apocalypse, she still couldn’t escape studying?

She just wasn’t cut out for school. Not everyone had a brain like her brother’s.

Sensing Shen Xiumei’s resentful gaze, Shen Xiuyan quickly changed the subject. “Mingyue, didn’t you bring a gift for Little Sis? Why don’t you take her to see it?”

“Oh, right!” Su Mingyue suddenly remembered. Before they came, she had carefully picked out gifts for everyone.

She stood up and started heading toward the car, but halfway there, she realized something was off.

She quickly shot Shen Xiuyan a look—Wasn’t the gift in your space?

He returned a look of his own—Already took it out and put it in the car.

Satisfied, Su Mingyue waved. “Little Sis, come with me~”

    “Coming!”

The two of them left in a hurry and came back just as fast.

“Mom, Mom, look what my sister-in-law gave me!” Shen Xiumei’s voice was practically bursting with joy.

Mother Su looked up and saw a dazzling gemstone necklace.

    “This, this is…?”

Shen Xiuyan glanced over and said casually, “Oh, that? Mingyue got it at an auction before. Not too expensive. I think it was five million?”

“Mm!” Su Mingyue nodded firmly. “The color’s beautiful. It suits Little Sis perfectly.”
