Sure enough, Zhang Chunfang wasn’t the least bit discouraged by Shen Xiuyan’s cold attitude.
She kept talking to herself, “Classmate Shen, let me tell you, this computer we’re learning now is just so frustrating—so big and bulky, and on top of that, unresponsive…”
Shen Xiuyan sighed, raised a hand in apology. “Sorry, Mingyue’s out. I’ll head over now.”
Without waiting for Zhang Chunfang to reply, he quickly walked away, leaving her standing there awkwardly as if she were something filthy that stuck on and wouldn’t come off.
Because of her eccentric personality, Zhang Chunfang didn’t have a great relationship with her classmates.
As this scene unfolded, faint laughter seemed to ripple from all directions.
Zhang Chunfang could vaguely hear the girls chatting not far off.
“Look, it’s that Zhang Chunfang again.”
“Tsk tsk, how is she so thick-skinned? Shen Xiuyan clearly doesn’t want to talk to her.”
“Who knows? I heard from Mingyue that they didn’t even know her before, just happened to be on the same train once. That’s way too shameless. They’re clearly not close, he doesn’t want to talk to her, and she still acts like she can’t tell—blocking him like that and rambling nonstop. Did Shen Xiuyan even say a word to her?”
“Do you think she’s into Shen Xiuyan or something…”
“Ew… seriously? Shen Xiuyan’s already married, and he and Mingyue are obviously deeply in love. Anyone with eyes can see there’s no room for a third party, and she still wants to squeeze in as a homewrecker?”
“If that’s true, all her education’s gone to the dogs.”
“Exactly. Sure, Shen Xiuyan is handsome and treats Mingyue well, but there are tons of men in the world. Why fixate on one who’s already married?”
“Who knows? Maybe it’s because Shen Xiuyan has money. You can tell Zhang Chunfang’s family isn’t well off, but Shen Xiuyan’s clearly different. Besides the school stipend, his family seems well-off too, and he’s generous with Mingyue.”
“True, there are plenty of well-off students at school, but ones as generous as him are rare. Just look at everything Mingyue wears, eats, and uses—none of it’s cheap.”
“Sigh, stop it. The more I hear, the more it feels like I’ll never find a man in the future.”
“Hahaha, shameless!”
The girls left, giggling and joking, leaving Zhang Chunfang fuming. She stomped her foot and snapped, “What nonsense are you talking about!”
But her protest sounded more like a guilty overreaction—as if her little secret had just been exposed and she felt embarrassed.
—
Inside the classroom, Shen Xiuyan took the book from Su Mingyue’s hands. “Let’s go. I’ll take you to eat.”
Su Mingyue pouted unhappily. “That Zhang Chunfang is so annoying. Why does she always have to talk to you?”
Shen Xiuyan teased her, “Just shows how attractive your man is.”
Su Mingyue huffed coldly, “Hmph~”
Shen Xiuyan looked helpless. This little thing had quite a temper. “You’ve got some nerve being mad. Think about it—who do you think that walking piece of clingy gum got attached to first? I’m the innocent one here.”
Su Mingyue looked aggrieved. “It’s all my fault. I never should’ve tried to be nice to her. Since then, I’ve learned not to play the good guy lightly.”
“Society gave you a lesson,” Shen Xiuyan said, rubbing her head. “Alright, your husband here doesn’t even bother with her. What are you worried about?”
That made sense. Shen Xiuyan was quite well-known on campus—and known for being totally impermeable.
Girls trying to flirt with him? Two words: no chance.
Thinking of that made Su Mingyue feel much better.
—
In the cafeteria, Shen Xiuyan kept piling meat from his tray onto Su Mingyue’s plate.
Su Mingyue quickly tried to stop him. “You eat too!”
“Alright,” Shen Xiuyan said with a smile. “Oh, by the way, I just heard Zhang Chunfang say you guys are studying computers?”
Su Mingyue blinked and nodded in confusion.
“Not easy to use?”
That triggered a rant from Su Mingyue.
“‘Not easy’ doesn’t even cover it! The whole department has only two computers, both huge and heavy, and just when it’s finally my turn to use one—it crashes! I totally lost my temper. Ugh, I only picked this major because it sounded fun. Now I have no idea why I ever signed up for this.”
Shen Xiuyan looked thoughtful.
Seeing him deep in thought, Su Mingyue asked curiously, “What are you thinking?”
“You’ll see. Just wait—I’ll give you a surprise soon.” Shen Xiuyan smiled mysteriously. “By the way, I just got approval for a lab, so I’ll be busy for a while. Might not have time to eat with you every day.”
“Wow~” Su Mingyue gasped. “Brother Xiuyan, you’re amazing! Those labs are usually for professors. You actually got one approved?”
She couldn’t help but applaud him.
Shen Xiuyan chuckled at her clapping like a little seal.
She really was his little ball of sunshine.
“But the department head only approved it for one month. It’s not long. I want to use the time to do something meaningful, so I’ll be pretty tied up.”
His sweet little wife nodded seriously. “Go ahead! I can take care of myself!”
“Good girl.”
In the following days, Shen Xiuyan asked Director Wang for a batch of materials.
Looking at the long list, Director Wang was baffled. What on earth was Shen Xiuyan up to?
Though none of the materials were expensive, the sheer quantity was staggering.
But considering that Shen Xiuyan was only a freshman and probably couldn’t pull off anything too wild, Director Wang didn’t ask too many questions.
Plus, a lot of the materials were already available on campus. So he took the time to gather everything for his favorite student.
After all, this was the first time Shen Xiuyan had asked him for help—and the kid made him look good too, always cooperative. He had to get it done.
Once Shen Xiuyan had all the materials, he completely threw himself into his work, forgetting to eat or sleep.
