Raising Kids C34
by MarineTLChapter 34: PUA Man, Stay Away from My Daughter (1)
After leaving the system space, the main system, which had just woken up from its beauty sleep, carefully examined the electronic screen in front of it. It found that the energy levels in this world were actually higher than in a normally developed world.
Since it had never been able to control this troublemaker anyway, and now realizing that he wouldn’t affect its energy collection, the main god simply decided to let him roam free.
Before heading to the mission world this time, Xie Hui noticed that the system had become significantly smarter, so he didn’t bother replacing it.
“By the way, when selecting clients in the future, make sure they have no lingering emotional ties.”
He was fine with raising kids, but if the system dared to assign him a wife in the mission world after he had explicitly said otherwise, he’d just use this system to practice—see if he was rusty at dismantling systems.
“Understood, Host.”
Xie Hui genuinely disliked emotional entanglements. Maybe he was just born without that inclination, or maybe he had seen too many mission takers go crazy over love.
Compared to that, he much preferred his current relaxed life of raising kids.
“Send me to the mission world.”
After a brief feeling of weightlessness, Xie Hui had just opened his eyes when he stumbled slightly. Someone next to him quickly supported his arm and said in a low voice:
“Sir, please restrain your grief. If Madam saw you like this from heaven, she wouldn’t be at peace either.”
The timing of his arrival was quite precise—just after the original host’s wife had passed away. They were currently in a cemetery.
The weather wasn’t great today; a light rain was falling, and a layer of white mist floated in the cemetery. The dampness from the rain made everything feel even more depressing.
“Mm.”
After the funeral at the cemetery, as Xie Hui got into the car, he noticed his assistant hesitating as if he wanted to say something.
He narrowed his eyes, leaned against the car window, and rubbed his aching temples.
Ever since his wife passed away, the original host hadn’t had a good night’s sleep. Whenever he closed his eyes, his mind was filled with images of his wife.
Overcome with grief, he didn’t care about his own physical discomfort. At times, he even used pain and exhaustion to torment himself, sinking into self-destruction.
From Xie Hui’s perspective, this kind of behavior was simply irrational.
After all, having a child was a decision made by both parents. Without the original host’s consent and participation, how could a child even come into existence? If an accident happened during childbirth, shouldn’t the blame fall on himself rather than the child?
Shifting all responsibility onto the child only revealed his cowardice.
Then again, if the original host had done everything perfectly, Xie Hui wouldn’t be here in the first place.
Having raised two sons before, Xie Hui was now about to raise a daughter for the first time, and he was somewhat looking forward to meeting her.
Rubbing his temples, waiting for the pounding headache to subside, Xie Hui finally spoke in a low voice:
“What is it?”
“President, the family called. Your daughter has a slight fever and has been taken to the hospital. Would you like to go see her?”
As the assistant who had been following the president for a long time, Xiao Li was well aware of how much the president had loved his wife. That was exactly why he was now so nervous, afraid that mentioning the daughter would bring up painful memories.
Although much of the sadness had faded, Xie Hui still gently rubbed his temples. Upon hearing this, he nodded slightly.
“Tell the driver to go straight to the hospital.”
After that, he closed his eyes, planning to rest a bit on the way there.
The original host had gone several nights without proper sleep. He and his wife had conceived their child in the second year of marriage, when their love was at its peak. Losing her while she was giving birth to their child had been a devastating blow that completely shattered him.
Xie Hui himself had no personal experience with love and didn’t intend to, but he could analyze these things logically.
A child shouldn’t be blamed for such a tragedy. A baby has no say in coming into this world.
Besides, if the original host had known that his wife’s health wasn’t suited for childbirth, why insist on having a child in the first place?
Initially planning to rest, Xie Hui found that these thoughts occupied his mind, leaving him unable to sleep.
When his assistant opened the car door, he stepped out and headed for pediatrics.
Since the child was still very young and the fever wasn’t severe, the doctors conducted a simple examination but didn’t find anything concerning. They decided to keep the baby under observation for a while before determining if medication was necessary.
When Xie Hui arrived at the hospital, he saw the baby being held by the nanny.
In the previous world, he had thought raising an adult son was easy. Now, he was suddenly faced with a challenge even harder than his first mission.
This time, the mission target wasn’t even a month old.
The baby, dressed in tiny clothes, looked wrinkled like a little monkey. When Xie Hui approached, she hadn’t even opened her eyes.
Having spent an entire lifetime studying medicine in the previous world, Xie Hui knew how tricky it was to medicate such a young infant, so he simply sat by the side.
Luckily, the fever subsided on its own shortly after, and the doctor gave some general care instructions before allowing them to go home.
The doctor had originally recommended exclusive breastfeeding, as it would be best for the baby. However, since the mother had passed away, he didn’t insist and instead recommended a few suitable infant formula brands.
Before they even got home, the baby started crying softly in the car.
Her cries were weak, tiny, like a little kitten mewing.
The nanny, who had never interacted with the gentleman before, was already nervous sitting in the same car as him. When the baby started crying, she became even more flustered, sweat forming on her forehead as she tried to rock the baby to stop her crying.
Watching her way of handling the child, Xie Hui frowned and reached out to take the baby into his own arms, gently soothing her.
Miraculously, as soon as the baby was in Xie Hui’s arms, her crying stopped.
Holding such a tiny baby, Xie Hui suddenly understood why, in the previous world, Xie Mo had been so cautious the first time he held a child.
Babies this young were truly light. Even their thumbs were thinner than Xie Hui’s pinky finger.
On the way home, Xie Hui thought about hiring a professional nanny to take care of the baby.
Seeing the nanny shaking the baby so forcefully after she cried made him uneasy.
It was only because the original host never cared about these things that the butler, without his permission, wouldn’t dare to hire a professional on his own.
Instead, he had simply picked a housemaid from the villa who had experience taking care of her grandson to temporarily look after the child.
In the original storyline, this child’s health wasn’t great, largely due to her early experiences. Xie Hui planned to be cautious from the start and make sure she grew up healthy!
After arriving home, the nanny originally intended to take the baby, but the moment she did, the child started crying loudly—whereas she had been perfectly quiet in Xie Hui’s arms.
“Forget it. I’ll hold her.”
Xie Hui carried the baby upstairs to the nursery.
This room had been carefully decorated by the original host and his wife, yet in the original story, the child had never spent a single night here. The original host had refused to let her, as every glance at the room reminded him of his grief.
After soothing the baby, Xie Hui carefully placed her in the crib and tiptoed out of the room.
Then, he went to find the butler and instructed him to hire a professional nanny as soon as possible.
For Xie Hui, hiring a professional was an urgent priority.
He had never taken care of a baby this young before. She was so fragile, like a piece of fine porcelain, as if the slightest bit of force would break her.
After explaining everything to the butler, Xie Hui returned to the nursery and looked at the tiny figure sleeping soundly in the crib. He frowned slightly.
Due to the sudden passing of the original host’s wife, the baby’s household registration had never been processed.
Afterward, the original host had been entirely consumed by his wife’s funeral, completely forgetting about it.
It wasn’t until someone reminded him—nearly three months after the baby’s birth—that he realized she still had no name and wasn’t officially registered anywhere.
The original host had named her rather casually, ignoring the carefully chosen names he had previously prepared. He called her Xie Simei.
The ‘Mei’ in her name came from his late wife’s name, symbolizing that he would mourn her for the rest of his life.
As Xie Hui looked at the baby, he thought about what name he should give her.
He had no intention of keeping the original name.
This child deserved to live a life of her own. She was a real, living person—not just a vessel for someone else’s grief.
Yet, after thinking for a long time, Xie Hui still couldn’t come up with a suitable name.
His thoughts were interrupted when the baby, feeling uncomfortable from a wet diaper, started crying. He quickly set aside his concerns and clumsily changed her diaper.
At this age, her facial features weren’t fully developed, but her eyelashes were already long.
Perhaps because her eyes were too small, Xie Hui couldn’t even tell if she had opened them.
Her damp lashes clung together from her recent crying, and just as Xie Hui adjusted his arms for a more comfortable hold, she let out a small hiccup from all the sobbing.
Barely a day into taking care of the baby, Xie Hui already understood why postpartum depression was so common among mothers.
The original host hadn’t been able to get any rest. And mothers in the postpartum period probably had even less time to sleep.
Though the baby was small, her cries had a piercing quality—loud enough to give anyone a headache.
In just a short amount of time, Xie Hui could feel his emotions becoming unstable. He couldn’t imagine what it would be like to endure this constantly.
Patiently, he continued to soothe her.
During dinner, he let the nanny hold the baby for a bit, but as soon as she left his arms, she started wailing.
With no choice, Xie Hui hurriedly stuffed a few bites of food into his mouth before taking her back.
The moment she was in his arms again, she stopped crying, leaving Xie Hui both exasperated and amused.
He had no idea that this was only the beginning.
By midnight, the little one was still wide awake. The moment he put her down, she would start crying. If he finally got her to sleep, she would wake up again soon after.
The most ridiculous part was that just as dawn was breaking, when the sky outside turned a dark bluish-gray, this little ancestor finally closed her eyes and slept soundly.
Xie Hui tentatively reached out and gave her a little push—she didn’t wake up at all.
