    She Is Not a God

    Grand Finale (Part Two)

The two sisters, Donglai and Dongcai, soon realized they could no longer contact Wu Jie. He was their point of contact, but now his phone wouldn’t go through.

Donglai panicked, so Dongcai dug out the contact information left by the police the last time they spoke.

Yun Song answered the call and explained the current situation, telling them to wait for news where they were.

The two sisters couldn’t possibly just sit and wait. They both rushed toward Xinghua Village.

When Ming Qingfu woke up, she was already in Xinghua Village. After she had said she wanted to go back, the Village Chief’s younger son had drugged her, then loaded her into a large vegetable truck to bring her back.

It had been a very, very long time since she had visited the Immortal Lady’s temple. The place no longer looked as it did in the past. Most of the villagers had moved away, and the offerings had dwindled.

The wind on the cliff was fierce. The red cloths that used to be kept inside were now hung outside the Divine Temple.

Faded to a pale white from exposure to the sun and rain, they snapped and whistled loudly in the gale.

“Ask the Immortal Lady when she’s going to let everyone know that what happened back then wasn’t my fault.”

“She wronged me, so she has to compensate me. Everyone who wronged me back then deserves to die.”

Ming Qingfu began to bow and prostrate herself with practiced ease, chanting just like the Heavenly Master used to do.

“Immortal Lady, open your eyes. Immortal Lady, look upon the suffering of the world. Immortal Lady, forgive us for our disrespectful sins.”

Then, she began to twitch and convulse all over, mimicking the Heavenly Master as if she had already established a connection with the Immortal Lady.

“The Immortal Lady says she is already finding a way to compensate you. Many of the people from back then have already died.” After all, thirty years had passed.

“Then tell the Immortal Lady to tell everyone that what happened back then wasn’t my fault.”

“The Immortal Lady says she knows. She will tell them.”

Ming Qingfu managed to survive another two days by using such coaxing and deception.

On the third day, the place where Ming Qingfu had been injured previously began to fester, and panic started to set in.

The Village Chief’s younger son had also run out of patience. “Stop pushing it back day after day. Did the Immortal Lady say exactly when she’ll let everyone know I was wronged back then?”

As he spoke, another thought began to take hold. “Are you lying to me?”

Ming Qingfu shook her head frantically. “How could I? How would I dare use the Immortal as a pretext for lies?”

The Village Chief’s younger son suddenly went silent, merely staring at her.

Ming Qingfu feared his silence most of all. If he was talking, he wasn’t as dangerous. If he went silent, trouble was coming.

Sure enough, the younger son grabbed her and began dragging her outside.

Just outside the temple was the cliff.

As soon as they emerged, the police officers lying in ambush in the forest below spotted them. The police had arrived at noon that day.

Ming Qingfu knew nothing of this. As she was pushed and shoved, the wounds on her body grew increasingly painful.

She wanted to try communicating with him again, but the Village Chief’s younger son had already retreated into his own world, constantly muttering to himself.

“My dad said you are the Immortal Lady’s Child Attendant. The Immortal Lady doesn’t allow anyone to kill you. If I kill you, the Immortal Lady will definitely appear.”

    He was certain of it.

Ming Qingfu felt the cold wind blowing up from the cliff, and her body began to tremble with overwhelming terror.

“Wait a moment.” Suddenly, a voice came from the other side.

The two of them looked up.

A strange middle-aged woman was walking toward them.

“Who are you! Don’t come any closer! If you come over, I’ll push her off right now!”

The woman was about thirty meters away from them, while the two of them were right on the edge of the cliff. Unless the woman was truly a god, there was no way she could be faster than him.

Ming Qingfu was somewhat nearsighted. At this distance, she could only see that there was a middle-aged woman there, but she couldn’t make out her features clearly. Yet in this moment, she believed the other person was a deity.

    “Immortal Lady! Save me!”

“Are you the Immortal Lady?” The Village Chief’s younger son shifted his attention.

“When I was here before, my name was Ming Wen. People also called me the Immortal Lady,” Yun Song said, speaking in the local dialect.

“Immortal Lady!” Ming Qingfu’s eyes lit up instantly.

The Village Chief’s younger son indeed did not recognize this woman, yet she had appeared just as he was about to push the Immortal Lady’s Child Attendant off the cliff… how could it be such a coincidence?

“If you are the Immortal Lady, turn me back into my younger self right now. You were with the others when they wronged me back then, so you should compensate me now!” As long as he returned to his younger self, the police wouldn’t be able to catch him, and he could start his life over.

Yun Song said, “…Let’s talk about what happened back then.”

“Back then, that family clearly framed me, but I was the one who ended up in prison for eight years. You are a god, yet you wronged me just like they did.”

Yun Song said, “The person back then had a cephalosporin allergy1. Your actions constituted death by negligence, and you have already served the punishment you deserved. You can start your life over.”

“Impossible! Impossible! You aren’t the Immortal Lady! If you were the Immortal Lady, you would definitely know I’m innocent! You would definitely know they framed me on purpose!”

As he spoke, he moved to push Ming Qingfu off the cliff.

At that moment, Ming Qingfu’s two daughters also rushed out.

“Wait! Don’t kill my mother! I’ll give you money!”

As soon as they moved, the Village Chief’s younger son took two more steps closer to the edge.

“Don’t come over! I want to see who is faster, you or me!”

Right now, he was standing on the very edge of the cliff, his gaze still locked onto the middle-aged woman he didn’t recognize.

“If you are the Immortal Lady, and I throw her down now, you will definitely be able to save her.”

He was waiting for Yun Song to speak.

Yun Song kept her eyes fixed on him. She remained extremely calm, her voice steady as she tried to de-escalate the situation. “Killing her won’t do any good. You can still turn back now.”

“You’re lying to me. She is the Child Attendant. If I kill her, the Immortal Lady will definitely appear.”

As he spoke, he became more and more certain. Yes, if he killed her, everything from his past could return.

He took two more steps toward the precipice.

Out of the corner of his eye, he continued to watch that calm middle-aged woman on the other side.

The other person did not run toward him, nor did she attempt to stop him.

He felt a sense of confusion. Logically, she should have been rushing over.

She clearly wanted to save the victim, so why wasn’t she running to the rescue?

In the next second, he saw the middle-aged woman’s hand move. Her speed was so great that he didn’t even have time to register what she was holding.

Immediately after, he felt something flying toward him. His head suddenly burned with heat, but that sensation lasted only an instant before darkness surged in.

He wanted to use his eyes to see clearly, to see exactly who that middle-aged woman was and why this was happening, but he seemed to… no longer have eyes.

Ming Qingfu hadn’t realized what happened either. She only knew that the Village Chief’s younger son had loosened his grip on her. She quickly broke free from his restraint and ran in the opposite direction.

Yun Song put away her pistol and hurried over as well.

She was indeed no immortal, nor did she possess magical powers.

    She was a police officer.

    And she had a gun.

    Author’s Note:

There are still extra chapters to come. Yun Song was able to shoot the opponent so timely partly because both people present only knew her as Ming Wen; neither knew she was a police officer.

    Translator’s Notes

    1. cephalosporin allergy: A common antibiotic allergy in China. In rural settings, improper administration of medicine by unlicensed practitioners (like the Village Chief’s son) leading to allergic shock is a recurring theme in legal and social dramas regarding ‘death by negligence’.
