by MarineTLChapter 97: The Control Group for the Farm Family’s Lucky Baby – 7
Word had spread that the strange man had woken up, but unfortunately, he had lost his memory.
Ren Xin was busy feeding the “extended member” of their family—the piglet—when she heard the news.
“Dad, didn’t you say you were taking over the job of feeding the pigs?”
Father Ren replied nonchalantly, “I did, but then I hired you. Don’t forget who ate that big chicken leg I brought back yesterday.”
Ren Xin was fuming. It was her. Why was she such a glutton?!
“But didn’t you say you bought that chicken leg for me because you adore me?”
Father Ren shook his head. “No, I said that for your mother’s benefit. That chicken leg had been sitting out for a while, so they sold it for cheap. I’d eaten a few too many meat buns and the accounts didn’t quite add up, so I cooked the books and reported the full price to your mother.”
Ren Xin: “…” You don’t have to love me, but please don’t hurt me like this!
Book Spirit Number One: “As expected, when there’s no external danger, a father is the greatest danger of all.”
Father Ren stood there like a landlord, watching Ren Xin work and prodding her with unpleasant remarks. Ren Xin snapped back at every turn, refusing to yield an inch.
He barely spent a cent and expected a high-quality worker? What a joke. Today, she was going to show her father exactly what “you get what you pay for” meant.
Book Spirit Number One: “Exactly. Just like me—when the host loses her mind, the Book Spirit strikes with a heavy fist!”
“Aren’t you showing up a bit too frequently lately?”
Book Spirit Number One explained with a hint of melancholy, “In the past, I was responsible for five other hosts besides you. Those were my glory days. But later, I was exiled. The higher-ups took away all the hosts I had and left me with only you, ordering me to be responsible for you one-on-one. I’m a victim here too, you know.”
But then again, who wasn’t? Ren Xin just wanted a quiet working environment. Why was that so hard?!
Zhang Qingmei had been making some bold moves lately, and the villagers were buzzing with gossip.
“What is that Zhang girl thinking? She’s throwing herself at him. I can see that man looks like a young master from a wealthy family, but does she have other motives?”
“Of course she does! That young master is handsome and generous. I heard he gave the Village Head’s family a hundred taels of silver as a reward for saving his life. A hundred taels! I’ve never even seen that much money in my life.”
“There’s more. When the Zhang family heard about it, they all rushed to the Village Head’s house demanding an explanation. They claimed Zhang Qingmei was the one who saved him, so their family should get a share of the money. Zhang Qingmei even told the young master how difficult it was for her to save him…”
“I don’t think the Village Head looks very happy!”
Ren Xin crouched inconspicuously behind the group, listening to their gossip with a look of pure delight.
Book Spirit Number One was even happier than Ren Xin. “What kind of dull, flavorless life was I living before? This is the kind of normal life a Book Spirit should lead!”
The plot was a mess now. The Prince had lost his memory and become a normal person; he was no longer obsessed with the female lead. On second thought, it made sense. He was a Prince, after all. He had seen all sorts of refined young ladies from noble families; why would he be uniquely devoted to a village girl?
When Ren Xin headed up the mountain again with her basket on her back, she stumbled right into a “crematorium1” scene. The Village Head’s daughter, Zhang Qingmei, and Lu Jinghuan were locked in a three-way standoff.
Ren Xin’s sudden intrusion broke the quiet, eerie atmosphere.
“If you’ve got nothing to do, please move aside. Don’t get in the way of a hardworking person going up the mountain,” Ren Xin demanded loudly and righteously.
The three of them looked at Ren Xin simultaneously. They didn’t speak, but they did step to the side.
Lu Jinghuan had no desire to deal with the current situation and addressed Ren Xin directly. “Miss, could you take me up the mountain to have a look?”
Ren Xin’s eyes darted around. She feigned hesitation and asked, “How much silver are you paying?”
Zhang Qingmei said displeasedly, “Ren Xin, are you starving for money? It’s just a trip up the mountain, why ask for silver? Master Lu, I’ll accompany you. I have excellent luck; I find something every time I go up the mountain.”
The Village Head’s daughter refused to be outdone, claiming she was also very familiar with the mountain.
Seeing that others were fighting for the job, Ren Xin decided to let it go.
