    Chapter 18

An’an didn’t pay attention to his classmates; his eyes were fixed on his father, who was walking toward him holding a small yellow duck balloon.

Li Datao still remembered the time when they returned with An’an to the station and how An’an cried so much over a balloon.

So now, every time he takes An’an out, as soon as he sees one, he never forgets to buy one for him, even though An’an no longer likes balloons as much as he did back then.

He tied the balloon to the button of An’an’s coat, rubbed his head, and casually handed the bottle of drink he had just bought to Fan Chunxiang.

The family was happy together, but Wu Jingyu, who was watching from the side, was about to explode in anger. He felt deceived.

It was agreed that they would all be model students, living a disciplined life. At home, he didn’t even dare eat slowly, fearing he wouldn’t catch up with Xie Shi’an.

If it weren’t for his mother fearing he would pick up bad habits and insisting on taking him out to play today, he probably would have still been kept in the dark!

    “Xie Shi’an! You’re too much!”

While gently pulling at the balloon string, An’an heard someone shout his name and instinctively turned his head toward the sound.

“Wu Jingyu, are you here to play too?”

It was such a coincidence to run into a classmate at the amusement park that An’an couldn’t help but feel a little excited.

“Didn’t you say you weren’t going out to play this weekend? Why did you lie to me?”

If it weren’t for the fact that there were so many people in the amusement park right now, An’an, though just a little child, still had his pride. Wu Jingyu was so upset he almost cried out loud, making a scene.

Xie Shi’an didn’t realize he had come so close to pushing Wu Jingyu to his limits, and now he was playing so leisurely in the amusement park. Who could tolerate such injustice?

    “I, I…”

At this point, Xie Shi’an remembered what he had told Wu Jingyu earlier and scratched his head, feeling a little embarrassed, not knowing how to explain himself.

He had never intended to compete with Wu Jingyu over anything. His effort to practice writing was just because Xie Shi’an’s nature made him want to do his best.

Since the teacher said his writing wasn’t good enough, he worked hard to make everything perfect.

Thinking about how many times he had rejected his parents’ offers to take him out to play because he was trying to catch up with Xie Shi’an, and how much fun he had missed, Wu Jingyu’s heart almost bled.

The more he thought about it, the more wronged he felt. Eventually, he couldn’t hold it in anymore, and cried loudly, even producing bubbles from his nose.

Wu Jingyu’s mother was embarrassed by this scene. She had heard a lot about Xie Shi’an, her son’s desk mate, who was often mentioned during parent-teacher meetings as a model student.

Her son wanted to catch up with such an outstanding classmate, and as a mother, she fully supported him. From urging him to study hard to now encouraging him to rest, she was very satisfied with his progress.

After all, as parents, only a very small number wouldn’t wish for their children to do well.

Now, hearing the whole story, it was clear that Xie Shi’an had no issues.

Some people were just born smarter than others. It was perfectly normal for their parents to want them to balance work and rest.

But her own son, who felt that Xie Shi’an was intentionally making things hard for him, was beyond reason.

If it weren’t for the crowd, Wu Jingyu’s mother even thought about abandoning such an embarrassing child!

How old is he, still crying?

It was the first time Xie Shi’an had seen a classmate cry like this in front of him. He didn’t know what to do until Fan Chunxiang handed him a tissue. He ran over to Wu Jingyu and squatted down, handing him the tissue.

Imitating how his dad usually comforted him, he gently patted his head.

“Stop crying, okay? I’ll make sure to tell you next time when I’m studying, alright?”

Wu Jingyu, who had just been sobbing, immediately stopped crying when he heard this. He wiped his nose with the tissue and asked after cleaning it:

“Really? You promise you won’t lie to me?”

    “Really.”

As long as Wu Jingyu didn’t cry like before, Xie Shi’an felt confident that it was the truth. Besides, Xie Shi’an didn’t spend much time on anything other than practicing his writing.

For him, results in studies depended largely on innate talent, and with a little more effort, good results would come.

    “Pinky swear.”

    “Okay, pinky swear.”

Wu Jingyu, without needing his mother’s reminder, got up very consciously, brushed the dust off his clothes, and with a serious look on his face, spoke:

“Xie Shi’an, I’ve made up my mind.”

An’an, who had been distracted by the balloon, was momentarily confused when he heard this. He instinctively asked:

    “What have you decided?”

“I’ve decided to be good friends with you!”

He was willing to share even the important matter of studying with An’an. This was something only good friends would do.

At this moment, Wu Jingyu felt a little regretful, thinking he should have realized earlier that Xie Shi’an wanted to be good friends with him. Sighing, he shook his head and patted Xie Shi’an’s shoulder.

He also blamed Xie Shi’an for not telling him earlier, causing them to waste so much time.

If he had known Xie Shi’an was too shy to tell him, they would have been sworn brothers by now.

    “You’ve suffered, my good brother.”

From his expression to every word he said, Xie Shi’an couldn’t understand his meaning, scratching his head innocently and looking at his parents for help.

Li Datao and Fan Chunxiang didn’t get it either. They were still thinking that today’s elementary school kids had strange thoughts.

The two children, who hadn’t gotten along much in the past, now met and acted as though they were long-lost brothers, throwing their arms around each other and playing together.

Fan Chunxiang, hearing that this child was An’an’s desk mate, agreed to Wu Jingyu’s mother’s suggestion that they play together, and the two families gathered together.

At first, Wu Jingyu’s mother didn’t notice anything unusual. It wasn’t until they walked for a while that she realized neither she nor her husband had said anything.

Not wanting to upset the parents of her son’s desk mate, Wu Jingyu’s mother decided to bring up something about her child’s school life, thinking it would give them something to talk about.

“Xie Shi’an’s mother, I’ve heard very little about his father before. My child always comes home and talks about how great Xie Shi’an is. Now it seems like your family has done a great job in raising him.”

After she spoke, Fan Chunxiang gestured with her hand, signaling that both she and her husband could not speak.

Upon understanding what Fan Chunxiang meant, Wu Jingyu’s mother’s smile froze on her face. After a long pause, she forced a stiff smile to cover her awkwardness.

    “Is, is that so?”

She felt a little guilty, thinking she may have offended them earlier. Before Wu Jingyu’s mother could think of a way to make up for it, Fan Chunxiang gently shook her head, indicating that she didn’t mind.

Having been mute since birth and facing many judgmental looks, Fan Chunxiang had developed a very strong heart.

The two parents, unable to speak, had still managed to raise such an outstanding child. Wu Jingyu’s mother couldn’t help but feel respect for them when she thought about it.

In most situations, An’an was obedient and quiet. Perhaps it was because he had seen his parents struggle so much since he was little that he tried to be as well-behaved as possible and not add to their troubles.

With a peer around, Fan Chunxiang suddenly realized how unusually well-behaved An’an was. He was so good it made her heart ache.

Meanwhile, Wu Jingyu, a chatterbox who was outgoing and lively, kept babbling, carrying a small water bottle to keep his throat hydrated for more talking.

An’an found him too noisy but also thought it would be rude to say it out loud. He occasionally responded with a few words, which fully ignited Wu Jingyu’s enthusiasm.

Wu Jingyu’s mother, watching these two children interact, couldn’t help but laugh quietly, even though she had tried to hold it in.

She felt that when they were together, her son seemed like a dog, and his desk mate was like a cat.

The goofy Husky and the quiet, graceful Persian cat, the more she looked at them, the more it seemed true. She even took a few pictures with her phone, planning to show her husband later.

Wu Jingyu, still not content on the merry-go-round, twisted around, calling Xie Shi’an to look at him, asking if he looked like the knight on horseback in a TV show.

Unlike An’an, who only looked once at where Fan Chunxiang was, worried his parents might leave him behind.

The thousands of years spent under the ancestral home had almost worn down An’an’s temperament, and he didn’t enjoy the amusement park rides, which were so interesting to other kids.

This visit was Li Datao’s idea. He knew the park had just opened and heard that kids loved to play there.

But An’an preferred botanical gardens over amusement parks. To him, the cold, lifeless rides couldn’t compare to all the flowers and plants.

Wu Jingyu noticed that An’an seemed distracted, his alarm bells ringing. Could he be thinking about memorizing his lessons even in a place like this?

From that point on, Wu Jingyu dragged An’an along to enjoy the rides. They played wildly, sweating and red-faced.

They didn’t return home until evening. When Li Datao noticed An’an seemed tired, he carried him and let him stand on a step before squatting down in front of him.

It was just like when An’an was little and he used to carry him home. An’an had grown a bit, and his father’s back didn’t feel as wide as before.

An’an hugged Li Datao’s neck, kissed him on the cheek, and said:

    “Thank you, Dad~”

After a day of excitement, Wu Jingyu was also a little tired. He had no particular thoughts, but after witnessing this scene, he instinctively glanced at his mother.

Wu Jingyu’s mother, with a polite smile on her face, greeted them kindly, suggesting they could play together again next time if they had the time.

Turning around, she saw her son and, before he could open his mouth, she heard her mother’s low voice.

    “Get lost.”
