Chapter 232: The Phoenix Man Who Soared Before the Apocalypse (37)

On the other side, Shen Xiuyan was whispering to Su Mingyue.

    “Does it taste good?”

Su Mingyue nodded vigorously. “It’s delicious, just too little. You can have the rest.”

She looked at Shen Xiuyan, whose face had turned pale, and couldn’t help but feel a bit distressed.

“It’s fine, you drink it first. We’ll have Aunt Niu make more tonight.”

“But there’s no meat left at home.”

Shen Xiuyan patted his pocket. “Did you forget? Your husband still has a space ability.”

Su Mingyue threw herself at him excitedly. “Oh right! I really did forget. We’ve been laying low this whole time to avoid Young Master Huo, so we didn’t dare to eat anything too extravagant. Now that you mention it, I’m seriously craving some fruit.”

Shen Xiuyan rubbed her head. “Give your husband a kiss, and I’ll head out in a bit to pretend I’m scavenging for supplies. I’ll bring everything back for you.”

Su Mingyue’s eyes lit up, and she immediately gave him a kiss.

She’d been craving it for a long time.

But with so many people around, she’d been too shy to make a move.

Shen Xiuyan teased, “Miss this chance, and it’s gone forever.”

“You’re so annoying. You could’ve just brought it to me when we got back to the room.”

Shen Xiuyan grinned mischievously. “Then your parents wouldn’t get any. Would you be okay with that?”

Su Mingyue pouted and admitted honestly, “Nope.”

Her parents needed the nourishment more than she did.

So Su Mingyue had no choice but to sacrifice herself. She glanced around stealthily, made sure no one was looking, then gritted her teeth and gave him a quick kiss.

Afterward, she proudly said, “You better keep your word.”

Shen Xiuyan instantly felt a surge of energy rushing through him. He solemnly vowed, “Mission will be accomplished!”

Su Mingyue was satisfied. She thought no one had seen her little move and was feeling quite pleased with herself.

What she didn’t know was that everyone around had caught that scene out of the corner of their eyes.

Mother Su shook her head helplessly. How were they even clingier than when they first got married? At least a hundred times worse.

Even as a mother, she couldn’t bear to watch.

    Sorry, everyone.

You’ve just been force-fed a bowl of dog food.

Can’t take it anymore—need to go rinse my eyes.

    Wait, no. There’s a water shortage now…

Even though that’s what she was thinking, the corners of her mouth were practically reaching her ears.

    So sweet.

After some more casual chatting, Shen Xiuyan felt his supernatural ability had mostly recovered.

He stood up and said, “I’m going to check on the car repairs, and I’ll head out to look for supplies while I’m at it.”

Father Su looked at him worriedly, clearly disapproving. “You already brought so many supplies with you. Who knows how many days’ worth that is for our whole family? There’s no need to go out now. Like you said before, S City has a lot of people, which means even more zombies. It’s too dangerous.”

Shen Xiuyan smiled. “It’s fine. I’ll just scout around nearby. I won’t go far, I promise.”

Father Huo quickly shot his foolish son a look.

Young Master Huo instantly got the message and stood up, patting his chest. “Don’t worry, Uncle Su. Let’s go, Young Master Shen. I’ll go with you.”

Shen Xiuyan pressed down on his shoulder and made him sit back down.

“No need. You stay here and rest. I’ll be back soon.”

What a joke. If he came along, how was Shen Xiuyan supposed to retrieve the supplies?

He had to bring back those fresh fruits he promised Mingyue. Otherwise, how would he earn more kisses in the future? Could Young Master Huo afford that kind of loss?

Father Huo thought he was just being polite and quickly chimed in, “Ah, Xiuyan, just let him go with you. One more person means more help.”

Shen Xiuyan rubbed his nose and gave an awkward smile. “Really, there’s no need. If Young Master Huo tags along, he might actually slow me down.”

    Young Master Huo: “…”

That felt like an arrow straight to the chest.

Fine. So he was dragging Young Master Shen down.

Father Huo was speechless too. So that’s how it is…

He glared at his son. “You useless thing. Can’t even lend a hand. How did you all even make it here? Don’t tell me you were a burden the whole way…”

Father Huo was starting to feel guilty.

Young Master Huo shrugged, fully self-aware. “Alright, I’ll stay then.”

Then he turned to glare at his dad and snapped back, “Stop looking at me like that. Even if I trained for a hundred years, I’d never catch up to Young Master Shen. His strength is unreal. Just look at that group outside—don’t you get it?”

“I’m telling you, anyone here who goes out with Young Master Shen would just be dead weight.”

    Everyone: “…”

Wait a minute. None of them even said anything.

Why did they all get dragged into this?

Great. Young Master Huo had just maxed out his aggro level.

Father Huo stood up, furious, and smacked his son on the head. “You little brat! It’s one thing to admit your own weakness, but why drag the rest of us down with you? If I had a supernatural ability, would I need you?”

Young Master Huo sulked and buried his head in Mother Huo’s arms. “Mom, look, he hit me again. I’ve only been back for a little while and he’s already hit me twice.”

Mother Huo smiled kindly. “Is that so? Come here, let me take a look.”

Young Master Huo was momentarily fooled by her gentle demeanor and didn’t notice the glint in her eyes.

He shamelessly leaned in. “Look, it’s a huge bump! I didn’t say anything because he’s my dad, but if it were someone else—ow ow ow!”

Before he could finish, he was already crying out in pain.

Mother Huo had grabbed his ear and was twisting it as she scolded him with a smile, “You little rascal, getting all cocky now? Mocking us all is one thing, but now you’re talking back about your father too? What, you planning to turn him in for justice or something?”

“Ow ow ow, I was wrong, I was wrong!” Young Master Huo quickly begged for mercy. “Your son wouldn’t dare!”

Once again, Young Master Huo was reminded of the fear his mother had instilled in him.

Damn it. He’d let her gentle act fool him again. Why hadn’t he learned his lesson? She was the true tyrant of their household.

Her grip was way stronger than his dad’s. He felt like his ear was about to fall off…

Father Su and Mother Su were dumbfounded. The Huo family really was something else.

They couldn’t help but burst into laughter.

“Hahaha, Old Huo, your son is a real character.”

“A little ball of sunshine. Auntie just loves him.”

The two of them chimed in one after the other, and without realizing it, the tense atmosphere from earlier when Shen Xiuyan said he was going out had eased significantly.

Shen Xiuyan cleared his throat. “Alright then, you all keep chatting. Young Master Huo, go grab the walkie-talkie. We’ll stay in contact. I’m counting on you to keep an eye on things here. Don’t let that group outside pull any tricks while I’m gone.”

“Got it! Leave it to me. I’ll keep a close watch on them.”

Young Master Huo nodded seriously, then trotted off to fetch the walkie-talkie.

Only then did everyone realize the real reason Shen Xiuyan didn’t want Young Master Huo to go with him.

After all that talk, it was because he didn’t feel comfortable leaving them unprotected. He wanted Young Master Huo to stay and guard the house.

Father Su was about to say they still had A Cai, but after hesitating for a moment, he kept quiet.

Forget it. A Cai was doing just fine as he was. Better not to tire him out.
