He could understand his mom acting like that—after all, she came from the countryside and was used to the warmth and nosiness of neighbors.
But that man and woman clearly looked like stylish city dwellers. Just one piece of clothing on them probably cost more than his family’s monthly income.
And they were this down-to-earth?
With the auntie’s help, the three of them soon walked out carrying six bulging bags of medicine.
“What the—did you guys go loot a pharmacy???”
The boy stood there, stunned by the wind.
The auntie shook her head, looking at him like he was hopeless. “Sigh, you single folks just don’t get it. They’re already married. How could they only buy for themselves? Of course they’d think of both families’ elders too.”
The boy: “…”
Is she really my mom?
Fine, say what you want, but don’t insult me while you’re at it…
The auntie turned back to the couple and said, “I’ll leave the stuff here with you two then. I’m heading off now!”
“Thank you! Oh, wait—please take this.”
Shen Xiuyan quickly pulled out some bandages and disinfectant from his bag and handed them over.
“This? Young man, you even bought this? I didn’t even see it.”
Shen Xiuyan smiled at her. “Learning from you—stay prepared even in times of peace. I saw someone get bitten, and figured this kind of stuff would definitely come in handy.”
“Hey, you’re not wrong. Smart thinking, kid.” The auntie patted him on the back. “Well, I won’t say no then.”
“Please take it. It’s a small thank-you gift.” Without giving her a chance to refuse, he shoved the supplies into her hands.
The boy was speechless. You’re actually pretty nice, but a thank-you gift of gauze?
Why does this gift feel… ominous?
Still, when he saw how happy his mom looked, he decided to keep quiet.
“Oh right, Auntie, you should go stock up on some instant food too,” Su Mingyue said warmly, clearly fond of the woman. “I heard they might start locking down residential areas soon. As in, you won’t even be allowed to go downstairs.”
“Oh no, really?”
“That’s what I heard.”
“Alright then, thank you! Tiantian, come on, let’s go to the supermarket next!!!”
The boy, dragging two heavy bags of supplies, gave Su Mingyue a resentful look.
Thanks a lot, really—
After parting ways with the auntie and her son, the two of them headed to the next pharmacy.
Even though each store had a purchase limit, they figured they could win by sheer volume.
Shen Xiuyan and Su Mingyue were practically on a mission to hit every pharmacy in B City.
But reality was cruel. After running around to more than a dozen stores, all they found were empty shelves and deserted shops.
Shen Xiuyan sighed again. As expected of H Country—lightning-fast response.
—
Maybe it was because they’d exhausted themselves the day before, but despite planning to get up at dawn, neither of them woke up on time.
Until a sharp ringtone pierced the early morning silence.
Shen Xiuyan frowned and picked up the phone. “Hello…”
His groggy voice made it obvious to the caller that he wasn’t fully awake yet.
But for the sake of his 200,000 yuan, the caller mustered his courage and said, “Young Master Shen, the fuel’s been delivered to the designated location, but I didn’t see anyone at the warehouse. Should we just unload it at the door, or wait for you?”
That snapped Shen Xiuyan awake instantly. His voice even carried a hint of amusement. “Ah, it’s you. That was fast. The warehouse isn’t locked—just unload it inside. I’ll be there shortly.”
“Alright, got it.” The man on the other end sounded thrilled, like he was waiting for the God of Wealth himself.
After hanging up, Shen Xiuyan immediately called the 4S Dealership.
“How’s my car coming along?”
“Young Master Shen! Everything’s ready. We’re en route to the address you provided.”
“Good. Thanks for your hard work.”
By the time Shen Xiuyan and Su Mingyue arrived, the dealership manager and the fuel delivery supervisor were already chatting.
“Buying this many cars and this much fuel—how long’s that supposed to last?”
“Must be for some big event. Rich people’s lives, you know? We wouldn’t understand.”
“But there haven’t been any major events announced lately.”
“Come on, bro. You think someone of his status would host an event and let you know about it?”
“Fair point.”
“Yo, you’re all here!” Shen Xiuyan greeted them with a smile.
“Young Master Shen!” The group responded respectfully.
One of the dealership managers beamed and said, “This must be Miss Su, right? You and Young Master Shen really are a perfect match—talented and beautiful, a match made in heaven.”
“Hahaha, right? We do make a good couple.” Shen Xiuyan laughed heartily. He liked what this guy was saying—he could keep going.
And the manager wasn’t just flattering them. He genuinely meant it.
At least in terms of looks, the two of them were a feast for the eyes.
Even without their wealth, they could probably make it as rising stars in the entertainment industry.
Su Mingyue blushed and lightly slapped Shen Xiuyan’s arm. “Shameless. Let’s go check the goods first.”
“Yes, yes, right this way.”
The dealership managers all gestured politely, inviting the two to follow.
“Just to avoid any confusion, we’ve placed the keys inside each car. The spare keys are in the glove compartments. Also, every car has a full tank.”
“Excellent. I trust your professionalism.” Shen Xiuyan patted a few of them on the shoulder. “Thanks for making the trip. Here’s 10,000 yuan each as a token of appreciation. Hope you don’t mind.”
As he spoke, Su Mingyue took out several stacks of cash from her bag and laid them out in front of the group.
The managers were overjoyed. They hadn’t expected such a generous bonus just for delivering cars.
“Classy!” one of them exclaimed. “Young Master Shen is so considerate. If you ever need anything in the future, just say the word!”
“Will do.”
After sending off the delighted group, Shen Xiuyan turned to the fuel delivery supervisor.
The man had been barely able to contain his excitement.
He pointed to the tanks and said, “Young Master Shen, these are the empty ones, and these are full. It’s quite a lot. If you don’t end up using it all, just let us know—we can take it back.”
“Got it. I’ve already transferred the payment to your finance department. Have them check it.”
“She already saw it. You really are fast when it comes to business.”
“Alright, now show me your payment code. I’ll send you the bonus we agreed on yesterday.”
“Sure, thank you, Young Master Shen.” The man quickly pulled up his QR code, then walked off grinning like a cat that just stole a fish.
Once everyone had left, Shen Xiuyan closed the warehouse doors and got back to work, diligently storing all the supplies into his space.
After he was done, they waited a bit longer. The final batch of goods Su Mingyue had ordered the day before was delivered.
Once everything was sorted, the two of them went for a walk by the river, enjoying the last bit of peace and quiet.
Su Mingyue gazed at the people playing in the streets and sighed. “We probably won’t see scenes like this again…”
Shen Xiuyan silently patted her head in comfort.
“Don’t dwell on it. Think about what else you might want to buy. While there’s still time, let’s get everything we can.”
Su Mingyue lowered her head, thinking hard. “Hmm~ I can’t think of anything. Feels like we’ve already bought everything. Well, except for firearms, but we can’t get those anyway.”
“Then how about some gourmet food? You won’t be able to eat that once the apocalypse hits.” Shen Xiuyan grinned. “Hubby’s space can keep things fresh. Nothing will spoil in there.”
“Yes!!!” Su Mingyue’s eyes lit up with excitement.
And so, hand in hand, the two of them headed off to the city’s famous food street.
