    Chapter 14

Shen Lihuan watched as the ambulance sped away and let out a breath.

Today’s unexpected incident reminded her of life in the apocalypse. In that world, aside from zombies and mutated plants and animals being humanity’s enemies, diseases were yet another formidable foe.

After the apocalypse, only 20% of the population possessed abilities, while the remaining 80% were ordinary people. With drastic environmental changes and a severe lack of medicine, people succumbed to illnesses daily.

It wasn’t until five years into the apocalypse that the situation began to improve. By then, major bases had been established, the situation had stabilized, and people could finally focus on medical treatment.

Although healing-type abilities could cure a wide range of diseases—including cancer, heart disease, and AIDS—those with such powers were exceedingly rare, fewer than fifty in the entire country. Countless patients never got their turn for treatment before they passed away.

In response to this crisis, the leaders of the major bases held a conference and proposed the concept of “universal medical education”—from five-year-old children to sixty-year-old elders, everyone was required to learn medical knowledge. Shen Lihuan, as a base leader, was no exception.

With her naturally high intelligence and the advantage of her wood-type ability, she mastered medical skills to an exceptional level. She had already planned that once the apocalypse ended, she would switch careers to become a medical scientist and continue researching medicine.

But then, an egotistical scientist attempted world domination, artificially breeding zombies and raising an entire army of them. Countless eleventh- and twelfth-level zombies were unleashed. To protect her base and prevent its destruction, Shen Lihuan ultimately chose self-detonation, dragging the scientist and his zombie army to their doom.

And then, she was reborn into this world.

Shen Lihuan found it fascinating how fate worked—she had learned medicine in her past life, and now she was using it to save people. It seemed that every cause had its effect, predetermined by the heavens.

You Changqing walked up and patted her shoulder, admiration evident in her voice. “Lihuan, you were amazing! You saved a life.”

A gentle smile gradually filled Shen Lihuan’s eyes. “Yes, saving a life is more meritorious than building a seven-story pagoda.” She turned to You Changqing with a warm yet determined gaze. “Changqing, I think I’ve found my future path. Becoming an outstanding medical scientist sounds pretty great, doesn’t it?”

You Changqing had always been someone with clear goals. Ever since she understood that she was the eldest daughter of the You family, she had been determined to take over Dingshang and become an exceptional entrepreneur. Now, she was working hard toward that goal.

She admired people who, like herself, had a clear direction and the drive to achieve it. So, she responded, “Yes, a medical scientist would be perfect.”

Shen Lihuan squinted slightly. Once a goal was set, she had to work hard for it—there was still a long road ahead. But for now, she had something more immediate to do. “Changqing, let’s head to Chaoning. Picking out gifts will take some time.”

Things had to be done in order—studying medicine wasn’t something she could start immediately, so it was better to get the gifts first.

Neither of them was the type to enjoy wandering around, so upon arriving in Chaoning, they headed straight for their destinations. You Changqing planned to buy her younger brother a porcelain ornament set since he had recently taken an interest in porcelain—making it the perfect gift.

Following You Changqing’s suggestion, Shen Lihuan bought a set of clothes endorsed by her little brother Chang Hong’s idol. She was sure he would love it.

“So, little Chang Hong is still at the age of idol-chasing, huh? Ah, youth is wonderful.”

Shen Lihuan sighed dramatically as she carried the shopping bag and walked out of the store with You Changqing.

You Changqing glanced at her with amusement. “You’re only two years older than Chang Hong. Where’s all this sentimental nostalgia coming from?”

Shen Lihuan merely smiled without replying. In her past life, she had been twenty-seven—wasn’t that already old…?
