Yin Xian did not reply with sweet words, but his resolute attitude to leave was ultimately unsuccessful. He did not leave Wang Jiexiang.
They busied themselves, putting the luggage in place.
Yin Xian reheated the food, and Wang Jiexiang stood beside him, watching.
Yin Xian ate, and Wang Jiexiang sat on a stool, watching him.
After he finished eating, Wang Jiexiang took his hand, and they went to the public bathhouse together.
At bedtime, she crawled into his bed, propped her chin up, and watched him close his eyes to sleep.
Yin Xian finally spoke to stop her: “Aren’t you going to work tomorrow?”
“I know…”
Wang Jiexiang lay on his chest, her hand resting on his waist.
“Watching you makes me feel more at ease. You haven’t talked to me for so long, you haven’t hugged me to sleep for so long, and for so long, I haven’t been able to kiss you…”
He opened his eyes and looked at her.
His calm, black eyes glanced over, and Wang Jiexiang’s heart skipped a beat, guessing that she would probably be scolded again.
“Alright, I’ll behave, I’ll sleep obediently.”
She propped herself up, rolled over to the side, and returned to her spot.
Pulling up the small blanket, she kept a good baby posture to sleep and said to Yin Xian:
“Turn off the light, goodnight.”
Yin Xian sat up.
Wang Jiexiang felt the mattress beside her sink.
She blinked.
His face moved closer, closer.
The cool lips, the pleasant scent that belonged to Yin Xian, gently covered hers.
He kissed her once.
The first kiss landed on the corner of her mouth.
Wang Jiexiang held her breath, eyes wide open.
The second kiss was directly on her lips.
Her brain erupted with fireworks, “crackling” in bursts. Her body was frozen by some strange magic, unable to move; her heart raced uncontrollably, pounding all the way to the ceiling, up to the high moon.
The second kiss ended.
The charming man who toyed with her heartbeat, Yin Xian, turned and turned off the light.
The room was filled with darkness.
Wang Jiexiang heard rustling beside her; he had gone to sleep.
—Hey, why did he suddenly treat her like this?!
Could it be because of what she said earlier: “For so long, I haven’t been able to kiss you”?
Wang Jiexiang silently grinned.
She couldn’t help but touch her lips, sweet and sticky.
The cold war ended here, and the couple’s relationship was even better than before their argument.
However, the daily bickering was still unavoidable. Yin Xian, for some reason, particularly hated seeing a doctor. Even when he was sick and feeling miserable, no matter how much Wang Jiexiang urged him, he just wouldn’t go to the hospital.
So, it often happened that he got sick, and Wang Jiexiang was more anxious than he was.
“It’s fine, I just didn’t rest well,” Yin Xian always said.
If he really was fine, she wouldn’t make a big deal out of it.
The problem was that Yin Xian was too stubborn. He’d say “I’m fine, I’m fine,” and easily turned a minor illness into a major one.
She’d get anxious, so anxious that she’d end up crying.
Wang Jiexiang wished she were a strongman, so she could just lift Yin Xian, and with one strong throw, toss him into the hospital.
“Are you afraid of injections? Afraid of taking medicine? Afraid that there are viruses in the hospital?”
Yin Xian kept shaking his head.
“Then is there some special reason? Is there something in your heart you can’t get over, and you just hate going to the hospital?”
“No, stop worrying about it…”
He hadn’t finished speaking when he was interrupted by a coughing fit.
Wang Jiexiang patted his back to help him ease the cough, helpless.
……
After Yin Xian repeatedly refused to see a doctor, Wang Jiexiang secretly made a vow: next time she gets sick, she’s going to stick to not going to see a doctor, not even taking any medicine! She’ll make Yin Xian feel the discomfort, the heartache, and the anxiety of being unable to do anything.
He’d be anxious, and then she’d stand her ground, sticking to his way of refusing treatment.
“I’m fine, don’t worry. Calm down, don’t make a fuss.”
Treating him the way he treats her, she’d leave him speechless and unable to retort.
The “opportunity” Wang Jiexiang had longed for came when she wasn’t prepared for it.
One day, after work, she was on her way home. It was too dark to see the road clearly. As she walked, she missed a step and rolled down the hill from Urban Village’s Uphill.
Her knee hit a water tank built in the middle of the slope, and she winced in pain, holding onto the edge of the tank to slowly stand up.
“Crash—”
She wasn’t sure if the tank was broken by her knee or collapsed under her weight, but the bricks of the tank fell apart.
The owner of the water tank heard the noise and came out cursing to demand an explanation.
Wang Jiexiang bowed and apologized, paying him all the money in her wallet.
When she limped back home, Yin Xian opened the door and saw the scratches on her face, the blood on her pants, and her obviously depressed mood. His expression immediately turned serious.
“What happened?”
Wang Jiexiang told him everything that had just happened.
He turned around, grabbed the wallet and house keys: “Let’s go to the city hospital, you need to check out those injuries.”
She had just paid a large sum to fix the water tank, and she didn’t want to go to the hospital again.
“It just looks serious, but it really doesn’t hurt anymore. It’s fine now.”
Wang Jiexiang blocked Yin Xian and dragged him back into the house.
“Can you help me, just apply some medicine or something?”
He seemed to not hear her and opened the wardrobe to find her a scarf: “It’s cold at night, is your clothing warm enough?”
“I’m not going out, I’m not going to the hospital…”
It was at this moment that the déjà vu sensation made Wang Jiexiang recall the vow she had made earlier.
“I’m fine, what are you worrying about? You don’t go to the hospital when you’re sick, so why should I go after falling down? I’m going to be like you, no matter what you say, I won’t go.”
She mimicked Yin Xian’s sarcastic tone, performing his previous stubbornness to perfection.
Unfortunately, the one being mimicked didn’t appreciate her great performance.
He expressionlessly wrapped the thick scarf around her neck, while Wang Jiexiang continued muttering, “Not going, not going.” He couldn’t be bothered to argue with her and, with one swift motion, picked her up and threw her over his shoulder.
Wang Jiexiang swung her legs, punching his back: Yin Xian, that’s a foul! How could he do this? She was trying to do something, and he did it first! What’s the big deal with being strong?
He still had enough energy to free one hand, lock the door, and carry her off, determined to force her to see a doctor.
“Wake up, Yin Xian, aren’t you the one who hates hospitals the most?”
Wang Jiexiang seriously suspected that the Yin Xian in front of her was possessed by a ghost.
His strides were large, walking with the wind: “Mm, I hate them.”
“You finally admitted it!”
She seized the opportunity to ask, relentlessly pursuing the question: “Why do you hate them, is there a reason?”
Yin Xian paused for a few seconds before changing the subject: “Does your knee still hurt? Is there any other part of your body that feels uncomfortable?”
“You’re changing the subject!”
Wang Jiexiang keenly noticed.
It seemed he really didn’t want to talk about it…
With a long sigh, she answered him.
“You’re overthinking it, I’m not in pain. The pain from earlier has completely eased, I just need to rest.”
This was really what she meant, but with her history of mimicking Yin Xian, it sounded just like one of his tough-guy statements.
So, he ignored her entirely.
“Xian-ge, let’s make a deal, no hospital. If you’re really worried, how about we go to a clinic and check? It’s really not serious.”
Wang Jiexiang was about to raise three fingers and swear to heaven.
He shook his head firmly: “No way.”
“Fine, then let’s negotiate again… This is a main road, a lot of people are watching us, can you put me down?”
“No way, your leg is injured, you can’t walk.”
Wang Jiexiang was frustrated: Why does he always get his way? Her earlier idea of picking him up and throwing him into the hospital was definitely the right one! Being strong sure is useful!
After waiting in line for half an hour, they finally saw the doctor.
The doctor examined her injuries and concluded: “This kind of wound can be treated at home.”
“Your knee is bruised, just apply some medicinal oil; the other abrasions can be treated with iodine. There’s no major issue.”
Wang Jiexiang turned to face Yin Xian and silently mouthed: “What did I just say?”
To her surprise, hearing the check-up results didn’t make him breathe a sigh of relief.
“Doctor, could you also check her eyes?”
It turned out he was worried about something else.
Staring into her eyes, Yin Xian described in detail.
“She can’t see clearly at night. It’s not that she can’t see at all, but she has trouble judging distances. If there isn’t enough light, she can’t see. Is this normal? Her vision is fine during the day.”
“Can’t see at night, but can see during the day?”
The doctor opened her eyelids and shone a light into her eye: “Your description matches Night Blindness, but we’ll need a full eye exam to confirm.”
“Night Blindness?”
Wang Jiexiang had always thought she was just more afraid of the dark than others. How could this be a disease?
Hearing the doctor, she became a little scared.
“Doctor… can this disease be cured?”
The doctor turned off the light, then began writing up her medical records: “It’s not certain if it’s Night Blindness. It’s too late now. You should make an appointment with Ophthalmology tomorrow. Night Blindness is difficult to cure if it’s congenital.”
Wang Jiexiang’s ears were ringing, and all she heard was the word: “incurable.”
She looked at Yin Xian, feeling as though she and he were a couple about to be separated by death.
The more she looked at him, the more her eyes drooped. She didn’t have her mother anymore, and the best person to her in this world was him. If something happened, she couldn’t drag him down and make him suffer the pain of losing her at a young age.
