Raising Kids C01
by MarineTLChapter 1
“Xie Hui, no offense, but are you really waiting to drop dead from overwork to be happy?”
Before even opening his eyes, Xie Hui heard an exceptionally irritable voice ringing in his ears.
“Your son got into another fight at the daycare. If I have to deal with this one more time, people are going to assume I’m his dad whether I deny it or not, you know that?”
Xie Hui opened his eyes and looked at the man in a suit standing in front of him. He rubbed his temples, still unable to fully process the shock of being unceremoniously kicked out.
So what if he had messed up a few worlds and taken down a few too many Heaven’s Chosen Ones? Who would’ve thought… that the Lord God would just throw him out like that?
At least it wasn’t a complete exile—he was given a system.
Unfortunately, it was the lowest-level system fresh off the production line, utterly useless except for its sweet talk and ability to act cute.
Xie Hui’s previous missions involved orchestrating comebacks, but he had a tendency to go overboard—his “comebacks” often left the Heaven’s Chosen Ones as mere cannon fodder, ultimately disrupting the Lord God’s control over the worlds.
Despite becoming a thorn in the Lord God’s side, Xie Hui was always good at justifying his actions.
If he was assigned to a job, he’d commit to it wholeheartedly—if a comeback was required, he’d see it through to the very end.
The Lord God must not have completely given up on him yet, because he was assigned a new mission: to become the father of children who had never been truly loved.
In the chaotic void, the exasperated and balding Lord God scratched his head. It was said that adorable kids were the best cure for the soul—surely, this troublemaker wouldn’t go and destroy another world this time, right?
“I’ll go myself this time.”
Xie Hui’s calm voice successfully cut off the other man’s ranting.
Brother Jiang was momentarily stunned. Once he realized what Xie Hui had just said, his professional instincts kicked in—he grabbed a jacket and a baseball cap and handed them over.
“Be careful. You don’t have any upcoming events, but the paparazzi are always watching you.”
Xie Hui nodded lightly. “Mm, I know.”
“You’re not young anymore. Zeze is truly a good kid. As a father, you should care more about him.”
Hearing Xie Hui suddenly say he was going to see his son, his manager, Brother Jiang, couldn’t help but nag a little.
“Alright.”
Brother Jiang arranged for a driver. Once in the car, Xie Hui closed his eyes and began absorbing the memories of this world’s original owner, along with the events that had followed.
The original host had shot to fame while still in college thanks to a hit web drama.
During that time, he had a girlfriend, and they had a child together. However, he was at a critical point in his rising career—too busy to even get enough rest, let alone devote time to his girlfriend.
After the child’s one-month celebration, his girlfriend broke up with him. To make amends, the original host transferred all the money he had earned at the time—plus a bit he borrowed from a friend—totaling 200,000 yuan, to her.
The child stayed with him, but since he was still in the early stages of his career and constantly busy, the child was mostly raised by a nanny.
The absence of both parents during his early childhood led the boy to develop a gloomy and withdrawn personality, reluctant to interact with others.
From what the original host remembered, his son had been trouble ever since his daycare days, and it only worsened as he grew older.
It wasn’t until middle school, when his son drowned while trying to save another child, that the original host finally realized—he had completely missed out on his child’s growth.
That boy had been a good kid—not as bad as he had assumed, and he certainly hadn’t deserved such an abrupt end to his life.
After his son’s death, the original host buried himself in work, eventually sweeping up nearly every award available.
But in his old age, his thoughts were consumed by memories of his child, filled with regret for failing as a father.
In his will, he left all his assets to charity.
The Bureau detected his lingering regrets, which led to this becoming Xie Hui’s first assigned mission after being expelled by the Lord God.
“If the original host was given this opportunity, why… didn’t he choose to reincarnate himself?”
Xie Hui casually conversed with the system in his mind. The system turned to look at the man in the spatial void and posed the same question:
“Why indeed?”
The man in the system’s space curled his lips into a bitter smile and gently shook his head.
“To me, my career will always be the most important thing. Whether it was my ex-girlfriend back then or Xie Ze, neither of them ever mattered as much as my career.”
“Even if I started over, it would be the same. I’ve dedicated my entire life to this—how could I suddenly change just because I’m given another chance?”
“…I’m leaving it to you.”
After hearing his answer, Xie Hui didn’t fully understand, but as a professional task executor, he didn’t press any further.
Upon arriving at the daycare, a staff member approached with an unpleasant expression—this was already little Xie Ze’s fifth fight this month.
“Xie Ze, your guardian is here. Hurry up and apologize to Wang Hao!”
Hearing the staff member’s entitled tone, Xie Hui’s brows furrowed slightly, and an inexplicable sense of displeasure welled up inside him.
A little boy in a onesie, covered in dust, was pushed forward by another child.
Xie Ze knew he was in trouble again, but he was surprised to see that it wasn’t Uncle Jiang handling the situation this time.
When he spotted the familiar man standing there, his big eyes instantly welled up with tears.
“I… I didn’t mean to cause trouble…”
It was rare to see his dad, and yet it had to be at a moment like this. The realization nearly made little Xie Ze burst into tears on the spot.
Since the original host was a second-tier celebrity with decent popularity, Xie Hui kept his mask on to avoid unnecessary trouble. He stepped forward, crouching down to meet Xie Ze at eye level.
The moment he saw his father, the tears Xie Ze had been holding back spilled over. He tried to wipe them away with his tiny hands, but before he could, Xie Hui took out a tissue and gently, yet seriously, wiped them clean for him.
“Baby, I believe you wouldn’t deliberately bully other kids, right?”
For the first time, after causing trouble, Xie Ze saw his father being so gentle. His round eyes widened in surprise, and after a moment, he finally nodded.
Every time he got into trouble before, the kindergarten staff would call his dad, and his dad would scold him without even asking what happened.
After so many times, Xie Ze actually felt relieved when Uncle Jiang was the one who came instead.
Today, not only did his dad not scold him, but he also asked him for an explanation. Xie Ze’s eyes were still a little teary, but he grinned.
“It was him! He said I was an orphan first, so I fought him.”
Xie Ze had just turned three, and when he got anxious, he could barely speak properly. But now that his dad was comforting him, he had calmed down and could explain more clearly.
“I think this student’s parents should properly explain why your son would say something like that, shouldn’t they?”
Earlier, when Wang Hao’s grandmother arrived, Xie Hui had been wiping his child’s tears and had overheard some unpleasant words from the old woman.
“Your kid says my Haohau said it, so he said it? Who knows if your kid just made it up?”
Most people would just accept their misfortune in situations like this to avoid unnecessary trouble.
But Xie Hui didn’t. Instead, he followed along with her reasoning.
“Then by your logic, you say my kid hit yours, so it must be true? Who’s to say your kid didn’t just fall on his own?”
Most people would brush off incidents like this, thinking that taking a step back would bring peace, and it was best to resolve things quickly.
But for a child, the experience was completely different. It could even make them doubt whether their parents truly loved them.
The old woman was so furious that her body trembled. She pointed at Xie Hui and scolded, “You young man are just being unreasonable!”
“Oh? Granny, you seem quite educated, knowing what ‘unreasonable’ means? Since this is our first meeting, I suppose I don’t even need to introduce myself.”
