Chapter 19: Completing job in the Substitute World (End)

The task was done, but the aftermath had just begun.

Lin Yuetian used three different angles to take the best possible photos of Shen Junyu’s corpse, ready to send them to the client. Afterward, he put down his phone and performed a disguise spell on Shen Junyu’s body, altering its appearance to resemble his own. Lin Yuetian then dressed himself in the suit Shen Junyu had tossed into the corner, disguising himself as Shen Junyu.

He picked up Shen Junyu’s phone and made a video call to the assistant, Li Yi.

“President Shen?” Li Yi answered immediately, his tone respectful. “Should I come to the villa to pick you up?”

“No, but there’s something else you need to take care of,” Lin Yuetian said, his expression calm but with a tinge of gloom. He turned the camera toward the corpse on the ground, which now looked like his original self. “There’s been an accident. Find a way to clean it up.”

Li Yi gasped, finally noticing the state of Lin Yuetian—his suit, tossed on the ground earlier, was dirty, and his tie, which had been used as a murder weapon, was wrinkled. Shocked, he asked, “President Shen, what happened?”

“Suffocation,” Lin Yuetian replied tersely, frowning in apparent dissatisfaction. “Don’t ask too much. Handle it—and by the way, I’ll be on a business trip for three months. Inform the company. Come quickly.”

“Understood, I’ll take care of it,” Li Yi said solemnly.

In his mind, Li Yi was imagining that Shen Junyu and Lin Yuetian had been up to some sort of risky play that had gone terribly wrong. Such incidents were quite common among the wealthy second-generation in this world. Considering Shen Junyu’s attitude and actions toward Lin Yuetian’s original self, it was almost surprising that something hadn’t happened sooner. In fact, Li Yi thought it was a good thing that this troublesome person was gone. With no mental burden, he agreed immediately and hung up.

Li Yi was indeed an excellent assistant. Lin Yuetian didn’t have to wait long before Li Yi arrived in a hurry, driving a van with fake plates.

Lin Yuetian, without a tie, opened the door for him. “Come in.”

“Where is it?” Li Yi asked directly.

“The basement,” Lin Yuetian replied, then asked, “How do you plan to handle it?”

“My younger brother is in charge of constructing a new development in the west district,” Li Yi answered quickly, indicating he had been thinking about the solution since receiving the call. “I’ve already arranged with him to use the entire construction site tonight. Filling cement isn’t complicated. Besides, the geomancer Zhao Tianshi mentioned last time that the foundation should be pressed with something human to balance the feng shui. No one else knows about this, only me. I’ll handle it myself. Rest assured.”

    “No one else knows?”

    “No one else.”

“Have you informed others about my business trip?”

“Yes,” Li Yi sighed and couldn’t help adding, “Actually, this might be for the best. President Shen, if I may, you shouldn’t continue entangling yourself with someone like Lin Yuetian. Young Master Bai is back, and you two—”

“I’m aware,” Lin Yuetian nodded, opening the basement door and signaling Li Yi. “Go down.”

Li Yi stopped talking and silently descended the stairs to the basement. Lin Yuetian followed him without a word. The staircase was long and dark, like a path to hell. When they finally reached the bottom, Lin Yuetian heard Li Yi’s surprised voice: “President Shen, why are there candles lit in the basement?”

    【System: “Sigh…”】

Lin Yuetian picked up the re-tied noose from the shelf.

“It’s very quiet here,” Lin Yuetian remarked.

Li Yi, puzzled, agreed, “Yes, it’s very quiet. I picked this place for you. It’s very suitable and convenient.”

“The environment is also good. Though remote, it has a courtyard with flowers and grass,” Lin Yuetian continued.

Li Yi, examining Shen Junyu’s disguised corpse, chuckled lightly. “Yes, Young Master Bai loves flowers, and so do you.”

Lin Yuetian asked, “We’ve known each other for a long time. Are we friends, Li Yi? How long have you worked with me?”

“Many years,” Li Yi replied, seemingly lost in thought but continuing his inspection of the body. “Friends… If you don’t mind me saying so, we are indeed friends. In fact, I’ve always regarded you as a friend. You, me, and Young Master Bai… Bai Li… We’ve known each other for years. President Shen, I’m grateful to you. If it weren’t for your support, I wouldn’t have known what to do after my family went bankrupt.”

Lin Yuetian nodded, now standing behind Li Yi. The candles burned quietly, casting the shadows of two living people and one dead body on the wall. Lin Yuetian repeated softly, “It’s very quiet here.”

Li Yi couldn’t respond anymore because he suddenly realized he couldn’t move.

Lin Yuetian said, “I think that if someone dies in a place like this, accompanied by a friend, they wouldn’t feel there’s anything to regret.”

He asked gently, “Don’t you think so, Assistant Li?”

After returning from the construction site, Lin Yuetian, disguised as Li Yi, followed Li Yi’s plan to dispose of the van with fake plates and erase the surveillance footage.

He asked the system, “Why hasn’t Mission One been completed yet? With CEO Shen Junyu, that scumbag, gone, who’s left to treat me as a substitute?”

【System: “Think about it yourself… Why did you kill Li Yi? Was it to vent for the original self?”】

Disguised as Li Yi, Lin Yuetian went to Shen Corporation and told the staff that he would be accompanying President Shen on a three-month business trip. He left the company and only then explained to the system, “Of course not. Escaping a criminal investigation as an individual is impossible. Even in my world, I needed an entire organization to handle the aftermath. Going solo is absolutely unrealistic. I’m confident, but I’m not stupid. The best approach is to make it look like a disappearance, suicide, or accident—anything but a murder case under investigation.”

    【System: “Heh, such rich experience!”】

Lin Yuetian, either not noticing the system’s sarcasm or pretending not to, replied, “You flatter me… In any case, Li Yi and Shen Junyu will disappear together, which will be seen as a disappearance. And because of Shen Junyu’s manipulations, it will appear that I, the original self, have no connection to them, allowing me to leave this circle. Once Li Yi announces Shen Junyu’s business trip and then vanishes himself, even if someone suspects Shen Junyu’s death, they’ll first suspect Li Yi as the perpetrator who fled. Besides, the second male lead, Zhao Shuyang, wants to take over Shen Corporation’s assets. If I were him, I’d want this matter to be as simple as possible—a mere disappearance would be ideal. Furthermore, with all the bank account manipulations, he’s already suspected an internal power struggle. Shen Junyu’s most trusted subordinate and friend, Li Yi, is the perfect scapegoat. Isn’t that a great answer? He’ll clear the path for me.”

The system didn’t know how to respond.

“In a way,” the system remarked, “the parent company’s data filtering wasn’t wrong. You are indeed an elite in your industry.”

“You flatter me,” Lin Yuetian said proudly. “I am dedicated to my work. Improving my skills in every aspect is my duty.”

“Find a good psychologist when you have time,” the system said sincerely.

“No need. Didn’t I already tell you? I’ve seen more than thirty psychologists, and they all said I’m perfectly healthy.”

The system, even more earnest, replied, “Considering the state of cyberpunk psychological diagnostics, I think that’s normal. Brother, please see someone competent.”
