Chapter 98: Educated Youth Who Abandoned His Wife and Child – 29

Director Li was sure that schools lining up to snatch Shen Xiuyan were a dime a dozen, and the conditions they offered would only grow more tempting.

If Shen got lured away, Q University would lose a treasured student, and they’d have no place to cry about it.

He stood up. “Does your village have a phone? I can call the school right now to check if your wife has been admitted.”

Brigade Leader Su watched the situation grow increasingly surreal. He hurriedly grabbed Director Li to stop him.

“Our village doesn’t have a phone, and there’s no need to go. These two kids are just messing around. I know exactly what level my daughter’s education is at. She just joined in for the fun of it. With her grades, how could she possibly get into university—let alone Q University.”

Su Mingyue let out a dissatisfied huff.

Shen Xiuyan picked up on the cue and immediately spoke up, “Dad, that might not be the case.”

But before he could finish, Brigade Leader Su shot him a dagger-like glare.

“Quiet! Is this the time to be joking around?”

Shen Xiuyan scratched his head, unsure how to explain…

After over a year of studying with him, even if Mingyue’s chances at Q University were slim, getting into a regular university definitely wasn’t a problem.

He had already estimated her scores—higher than the first educated youth to receive an admission letter.

But Brigade Leader Su wasn’t listening to any explanations. He was terrified that the kids’ antics would anger Director Li.

He carefully apologized to Director Li, “Please don’t take offense. I’ll have him pack up and go with you right away. They’re young and probably just don’t want to be separated so soon, so they’re using this kind of excuse to mess with you.”

This was Q University they were talking about—getting in would be a blessing even for ancestors in their graves.

Actually, come to think of it, maybe those ancestors were blessing them right now…

Why on earth was Shen Xiuyan hesitating? Wouldn’t it be better to go to B City with the director?

The director knew the ropes—it’d be safer for Shen to go with him.

Even if it was because his daughter didn’t want to go to school, it shouldn’t stop him!

A national top scorer plus a Q University double buff—Brigade Leader Su felt like it punched him right in the face.

“I understand, I understand. Young couples want to be glued together all day, it’s natural they don’t want to separate. But this is school—we all have to make some sacrifices.”

Director Li finally relaxed. With such a reasonable father-in-law, he was truly grateful. If Shen agreed to go with him now, it would save him so much effort.

“Yes, yes, yes,” Brigade Leader Su agreed rapidly.

Shen Xiuyan rubbed his forehead, feeling a headache coming on.

He interrupted the conversation already making plans for his future. “Director Li, I really can’t go right now. I’ll wait until Mingyue’s admission letter arrives, then make my decision.”

    Director Li’s heart clenched again.

The father-in-law might be on board, but if the man himself was unwilling, what could he do?

He considered it, then decided to stick to the original plan.

“No problem, I understand. Let’s do as I said before—I’ll go to the county and make a call. Won’t take long.”

Shen Xiuyan smiled. “Sorry to trouble you.”

“It’s no trouble. It’s my duty.”

Brigade Leader Su felt like their roles had reversed—why did it seem like Director Li wasn’t angry at all, even eager?

Just then, someone knocked on the door again.

“Old Su, Old Su, someone from B University is here too…” The man’s voice wavered a bit. “What’s going on in your house…?”

“Coming—” Brigade Leader Su clutched his wildly beating heart. He honestly had no idea what was happening today.

First Q University, now B University—two of the most prestigious schools in the country, both sending people.

    Was the world this magical?

At this point, he still didn’t realize what Shen Xiuyan—this freakish top scorer—truly represented.

He was the face of the entire school.

When Director Li heard the voice outside, his eyes instantly sharpened.

See? Didn’t he say so? These schools were like hyenas—smelled blood and came running.

He came here first—he wasn’t about to let anyone else steal his prize.

Gritting his teeth, he grabbed Brigade Leader Su’s arm, stopping him from opening the door.

Then he turned to Shen Xiuyan. “As long as you come to our school, I guarantee that no matter your wife’s exam results, I will secure her a university placement. Any major—her choice.”

That was the biggest concession he could offer.

Brigade Leader Su was dumbfounded. By now, he had completely tuned out the continuous knocking at the door.

    What Director Li just said…

Meant his daughter could go to university too???

    At Q University???

He held his breath and turned to look at Shen Xiuyan, eager to hear his response.

Shen Xiuyan beamed like a sly little fox.

Now that’s more like it. Show enough sincerity, and he wouldn’t refuse.

Feigning concern for Director Li, he said, “That might not be appropriate. What if people talk… Maybe you should still make the call.”

“No need, no need. We have two direct admission slots this year—I’ll give you one.”

Make a call? Call what? If he waited, someone else would swoop in and steal him.

Shen Xiuyan’s smile was bright and warm. “Since you’re willing to make such a promise, then I won’t say more. Mingyue and I will pack up and go with you anytime.”

“Yes, good, very good.” Director Li finally let out a long sigh of relief.

“Old Su, what are you doing? Why haven’t you opened the door yet?”

The knocking grew more urgent. Director Li finally let go of Brigade Leader Su’s arm, and the man, freed, drifted to the door like a ghost and opened it.

“Old Su, this is a leader from B University. He’s also here to see your Xiuyan.”

Brigade Leader Su seemed not to hear. He mumbled to himself—

    “Mingyue’s going to university…”

    “Mingyue’s going to university…”

The man at the door gave a sheepish smile to the B University leader. “Come on in, he’s inside. I think he just found out Xiuyan got in and is too happy to think straight.”

The B University leader smiled politely and stepped inside.

Once they were gone, a village cadre grabbed Brigade Leader Su and shook him. “What are you doing? Why are you acting like a fool?”

Brigade Leader Su suddenly hugged the man in front of him, tears welling in his eyes. “Mingyue can go to university! Mingyue can go to university!”

The cadre, though visibly disgusted, didn’t push him away. Instead, he patted him on the back in comfort.

Sigh. Mingyue hadn’t even gotten her admission letter yet—what university? Clearly, he was so thrilled about Shen Xiuyan’s success that he lost his mind.

    Another one had gone mad.

How many was that this month already…?

Who would’ve thought it would finally be Old Su’s turn?

Still, even if he’d gone mad, he was truly happy for that family.
