Chapter 102: Educated Youth Who Abandoned His Wife and Child – 33

Shen Xiuyan patted Mingyue’s head. “Comrade Zhang, you go ahead and eat those. Mingyue, you’ll eat with me from the lunchbox.”

“Okay.” Su Mingyue blushed in embarrassment—it was as if Brother Shen had seen right through her. She hadn’t been full at all.

Ugh, I’m never doing good deeds again. Being a good person is too hard.

Shen Xiuyan chuckled to himself. Good, he was spending money to teach his wife a lesson—to let her see how dangerous society could be.

Just then, a girl in the next seat spoke up, “Comrade, could I ask where the dining car is?”

Shen Xiuyan replied, “Car No. 5.”

The girl hesitated and asked again, “Do you know if the food there is expensive?”

Shen Xiuyan nodded. “A bit more expensive than outside. These two vegetable dishes cost one yuan.”

The girl was shocked. That was several times pricier than outside! But staring at the hot dishes, she couldn’t help but crave them. Thinking that if she just ordered one dish for herself, it wouldn’t be too bad.

She got up and said, “Thanks. I’ll go buy something. Could I trouble you to watch my luggage?”

Shen Xiuyan nodded generously. “Sure, go ahead.”

Zhang Chunfang listened quietly to their conversation as she ate and felt a chill run down her spine.

So the vegetables under her chopsticks were that expensive? She’d thought they were, at most, ten cents more than outside…

She secretly glanced up—Shen Xiuyan must come from a well-off family.

Su Mingyue looked like just an ordinary girl. How did she land such a good man…

Perhaps her gaze had become too intense, because Su Mingyue felt it. If she wasn’t mistaken, she’d seen this kind of look plenty of times back in the village…

Could it be that this Zhang Chunfang had taken a fancy to her man?

She was just doing a good deed—why did this woman have to eye her man!

Unforgivable! She angrily took a big bite of the flatbread in her hand.

Fortunately, when she turned her head, Shen Xiuyan acted like he didn’t even see the girl across from them. He was still focused on stuffing more vegetables into her flatbread.

    Her mood instantly improved.

He really was her man—different from the rest!

And at the same time, she ground her teeth and swore to herself that she would never be a good person again!

    Bad luck!

This little lesson was a smashing success—far more effective than Shen Xiuyan had expected.

After they got off the train, Director Li looked at the unexpected extra person in their group and asked, “And who’s this?”

“She’s also reporting to our school. She was scared of going alone, so she asked to come with us.”

“Oh, that’s fine too. Little comrade, come along. I’ll take you all over.”

Director Li didn’t waste another word and led the three of them through winding paths until they boarded a bus. An hour later, they finally arrived at the gate of Q University.

The moment they got there, he didn’t even give Shen Xiuyan time to catch his breath before immediately taking them to register.

Only when Shen Xiuyan finally completed his registration did Director Li let out a truly satisfied smile.

    Everything was settled!

Even the teacher helping with the registration gave Director Li a thumbs-up. As expected of their director—an old hand could pull off the work of two! He actually managed to trick—er, recruit—the student!

Zhang Chunfang was a bit puzzled why Shen Xiuyan and his group had a special escort—especially a school official—but surrounded by teachers, she didn’t dare ask.

She speculated silently: perhaps Shen Xiuyan had some kind of special status. With a face like that, he definitely looked like someone from a rich or powerful family.

After everything was finished, Director Li wiped the sweat from his forehead. “Dormitories are free too, though the environment might not be great. Eight people to a room, and it’s a bit far. I’ll take you there.”

Zhang Chunfang was delighted. She hadn’t left after registering, and now she was getting this unexpected bonus.

To be escorted to the dorms by the director himself—if people saw, who would dare offend her in the future?

But Shen Xiuyan waved it off. “No need. We probably won’t be living on campus. My family’s in B City too, so I plan to take Mingyue home first.”

“You’re also from B City? Then of course, you should go home,” Director Li said, thinking of his own past as a sent-down youth. He probably hadn’t seen his family in years.

Not long after Shen Xiuyan and Su Mingyue left, Director Li prepared to return to his office.

Unexpectedly, a soft voice came from beside him: “Director… should we go to the dorms now?”

Director Li paused mid-step and turned to see Zhang Chunfang.

    Why was she still here?

He was only responsible for receiving Student Shen, not anyone else. Anyone with eyes could tell that.

Who would’ve thought someone could be so shameless and just tag along the whole way…

“You wait here,” he said, glancing around. Then he waved at a staff member nearby. “Xiao Dai, come here. Please show this student where the dorms are.”

Zhang Chunfang saw the confusion in the director’s eyes—what? A grown woman like her had been following them the whole time, and he hadn’t noticed?

    Her face burned with shame.

“Hey, student, come here. I’ll tell you how to get there. You shouldn’t bother the director with such a small matter,” the staffer called out without even walking over, just beckoning with his hand.

Then he shouted to Director Li, “Director, leave this to me. The principal’s still waiting for your good news!”

    “Got it!”

Watching Director Li walk away without a care, Zhang Chunfang lowered her head and unwillingly shuffled toward the staff member.
On Shen Xiuyan’s side, he was navigating the streets with Su Mingyue, stumbling a bit as he tried to recall the route from memory.

The city had changed so much over the years that he wasn’t entirely sure of the way.

Relying on what little memory he had, he finally arrived at his doorstep.

But just as they reached the door, Su Mingyue seemed even more nervous than he was. She tugged on his sleeve, stopping him from knocking.

“Brother Xiuyan, what if your parents don’t like me…?”

Shen Xiuyan smiled. “That’s impossible. Be confident. You’re the college-attending daughter-in-law they’ve always dreamed of. They’ll be too proud to even show it—they’ll love you.”

Even with his reassurance, Su Mingyue was still scared. She whimpered and clung tightly to his arm.

“Just wait a little before knocking. Let me gather myself.”

Shen Xiuyan gave her a helpless smile and turned to hold her in comfort.

Suddenly, footsteps echoed from the staircase.

“Hey, who are you two? What are you doing in front of my house?”

Hearing the voice, Su Mingyue jerked her head up—and locked eyes with the woman.

The moment she saw her, she ducked right back into Shen Xiuyan’s arms.

Ugh, she wanted to die from embarrassment…

Zhou Guiying was also a little flustered. She’d just come back from grocery shopping and found two young people cuddling right at her door.

Doing that in broad daylight—such a disgrace to public morals.

It wasn’t really her business, but they were blocking her way home, so she had no choice but to speak up and stop them from flirting.

Whose kids were these anyway? So bold and shameless! Were they not afraid of being seen?

Then Shen Xiuyan turned around at the sound of her voice—and Zhou Guiying froze.

How come this guy looked so much like her youngest son…

    Wait a minute!

    This was her youngest son!

Her gaze immediately shifted to the girl in his arms. So that meant this was her daughter-in-law?

Aaaaah! So they were her own kids! Her face was burning.

But the way the daughter-in-law acted like a shy little squirrel, too embarrassed to show her face, was so adorable. She obviously wasn’t a shameless girl—ptooey, ptooey, she hadn’t said anything just now, nope!
