No Ulterior Motives C144
by MarineTLChapter 144: How Did a Little Girl Like You Dare to Do That?
It wasn’t until Zhu Le had been successfully coaxed into signing the directed employment agreement that Jiang Ning suddenly realized—
She had completely overlooked one of the biggest talent pools.
Even though Jiangzhou University had only recently climbed from a second-tier to a first-tier college, and it didn’t even have many master’s programs yet, that didn’t mean the school lacked talent she could use.
“When does your school usually hold campus recruitment?”
“Between September and November, but there’s a smaller round in June too.”
June? That was just next month—it was already May.
Maybe she could make a trip there next month and give it a shot.
She just wasn’t sure if the university had the same qualification requirements for companies as that weird job fair earlier.
Right now—
Zhu Le hesitated for a long while before finally speaking up:
“Jiang Ning, are you really sure it’s okay for you to make this decision on behalf of the manager?”
“What if they go back on their word later?”
Hearing this, Jiang Ning smiled faintly.
“What?”
“Worried that the 3,000 yuan monthly salary was just a scam?”
“N-no, no.” The young man shook his head, his face flushed red, not even daring to lift his eyes.
“Relax…”
She had just started to speak when—
A girl’s voice suddenly came from the booth next door, filled with accusation.
“Excuse me, sorry to interrupt.”
Hearing this, Jiang Ning turned her head.
She saw a plainly dressed girl with a ponytail, standing with her back to their booth, facing the HR rep at the neighboring booth with her chin slightly raised, questioning:
“Dear HR, do you know why the gentleman sitting in front of you got fired from his last job?”
The moment she said that—
Even the HR guy looked stunned, and so did Jiang Ning.
She tilted her head slightly and saw a sharply dressed young man sitting stiffly, his expression dark and motionless.
Then the ponytail girl continued:
“This guy was fired for cooking the books—caught by his previous company and dismissed.”
“And now you want someone like this handling finances for your company?”
The words dropped like a bomb.
All the other job seekers and recruiters—including Jiang Ning—looked stunned.
And instinctively—
Everyone began to glance at the HR rep with a complicated look in their eyes.
Because in cases like this—
It was very likely true.
After all, no girl would randomly expose a man’s past like that in front of a crowd without a real reason.
They were either bitter enemies.
Or ex-lovers.
Whatever the relationship was, the drama practically wrote itself.
Tsk, tsk.
Time for a good show.
Jiang Ning immediately shifted her chair to the side and found the most comfortable position to sit and watch.
Sure enough—
The next second, the man shot to his feet with a loud scrape, eyes blazing with rage as he glared at the girl.
“Yu Lingling, are you f**king insane!?”
“I’m insane? Yeah, maybe I am! Would I have nearly fallen for a beast in human skin like you otherwise?” she shouted, then turned to the now thoroughly awkward HR rep and said:
“If you don’t believe me, I can give you the number for his former company.”
“You can call and check yourself.”
But—
Before she could even finish, the man exploded with anger, suddenly slapping her hard across the face.
Smack!
With immense force, the girl’s small body was flung backwards—
Right toward the still-watching Jiang Ning.
Just as she was about to collide with Jiang Ning’s stunned figure—
A figure darted in front of her.
Looking up—
It was Zhu Le, the sweet college guy, who caught the flying girl mid-air.
“You okay!?”
Jiang Ning also stepped forward to check.
“I’m fine.”
Zhu Le shook his head and helped the girl back up.
At that moment—
Jiang Ning finally noticed:
This skinny little girl now had a bright red handprint on her face.
Big. Bold. Brutal.
It almost covered half her face.
Damn.
That was one hell of a slap.
And the guy who hit her didn’t look like he was stopping anytime soon—he lunged forward to kick the ponytail girl.
That kick was definitely going to hurt if it landed.
Panicking, Jiang Ning grabbed the nearest chair and rammed it forward.
But she overestimated her strength.
The moment their bodies collided, she was knocked backward by the sheer force and nearly fell over—
Luckily, someone caught her.
She turned around—it was the confused-looking Wang Jianguo.
“Boss, what’s going on?”
“Break up, what do you think!?”
“Oh, got it!”
Without hesitation, Wang Jianguo charged toward the enraged man.
Holy hell!
That bold!?
Seeing the paparazzi girl going in unarmed, Jiang Ning quickly grabbed a plastic stool again, ready to jump in anytime.
But then—
A scene that shocked her unfolded.
Just as Wang Jianguo approached, she swayed like a leaf in the wind, dodging past the man’s side effortlessly.
She slid behind him—
And with one well-placed kick, knocked the man down to one knee.
Then—
As the man tried to get up, he got slammed down again with another kick to the back.
Laid out flat.
After the final kick, Wang Jianguo even struck a textbook sanda pose to finish, looking oddly fierce.
Damn!
Not just Jiang Ning—everyone around was stunned by this cap-wearing girl.
Several breaths passed.
Jiang Ning finally snapped out of it, staring in a daze at the paparazzi girl.
One thought spun in her head:
So those certificates were real.
By now, Zhu Le had also stood up and helped the ponytail girl to her feet.
“You alright?”
“Are you hurt?”
Clearly—That slap had left her dazed.
She just stood there, holding her face, unable to respond for a while.
Seeing this—Zhu Le kindly added a question:
“You’re just a girl—how did you even dare…”
Before he could finish—The ponytail girl snapped her red-rimmed eyes at him.
“So what if I’m a girl?”
“He got fired for shady dealings, and dragged our whole department down with him.”
“You have no idea how many people suffered because of him!”
By then, the security guards had come and taken control of the violent man.
Jiang Ning returned to her booth just in time to hear Miss Yu Lingling’s statement.
She couldn’t help but ask:
“You weren’t scared?”
“Scared! Of course! But I couldn’t stay silent,” the ponytail girl choked out, her tears starting to fall.
“Every time I think about how Sister Ma, Brother Li, and the others lost their jobs because of trash like him—I just can’t hold it in.”
Even though Jiang Ning knew things were probably more complicated than that—
She couldn’t bring herself to explain to such a straightforward girl right now.
But she really admired her spirit.
She poured her a cup of hot water and handed it over.
Just then—
Comrade Wang Jianguo came storming back, leaned in close to Jiang Ning’s ear, and said:
“That guy got caught in an internal audit for financial misconduct. To protect their image, the company fired the whole department.”
“But publicly, they claimed it was just a normal staff reshuffle.”
“Where did you hear that?” Jiang Ning asked with a puzzled look.
After all, this sort of thing involved a company’s internal affairs. Normally, it wouldn’t be so easy to find out.
“I heard it came from the company itself.”
Hearing this, Miss Jiang was momentarily stunned, then nodded in sudden realization.
After all, a company has to protect itself—but letting a menace like that continue to harm others would also be unethical.
That being the case, this girl really was wronged by that slap.
Out of sympathy, Jiang Ning walked over to the girl and, almost subconsciously, picked up the résumé lying on the ground.
She opened it and gave it a quick glance.
Bachelor’s degree.
Accounting major.
Nothing particularly special otherwise.
But then Jiang Ning spotted something in the work experience section that caught her attention.
[June to August 2000, part-time at Dongfeng Motors 4S dealership, awarded Sales Champion title for August]
A two-month part-time gig.
First month to get familiar with things.
Second month—boom, sales champ.
Isn’t that the definition of a natural-born sales talent?
What the heck is she doing studying accounting?
So, Jiang Ning narrowed her eyes and, using an extra-gentle tone, sweetly said:
“Big Sister Yu, you’re job hunting too, right?”
For some reason, when this line reached the ears of nearby Zhu Le, a strange sense of déjà vu crept into his heart…
