Chapter 118: Educated Youth Who Abandoned His Wife and Child – 50

Dean Qiu was completely surrounded by a crowd of people packed together like sardines.

In such an environment, he felt like he was suffocating.

He finally managed to break free and, just like before, selected a few talents from the field to enter Shen Xiuyan’s new lab to study and absorb new knowledge.

On another fresh new day, Shen Xiuyan put down the documents in his hands and casually said, “You guys keep studying—I’ve got to go pick up my wife for lunch.”

The researchers replied “Okay” with envy in their eyes and a tinge of sorrow in their voices.

They were all human beings too, so why was he so outstanding? Teaching two separate groups, inventing new things, and still having plenty of time to spend with his beloved.

Unlike them—up at dawn, back late at night—didn’t even have time to fall in love.

In the school cafeteria, Su Mingyue was sharing her recent frustrations with Shen Xiuyan.

“Brother Xiuyan, it’s so troublesome keeping in touch with my parents. I sent a letter last month, and only got a reply this month.”

Because there was no public phone in the village, they still had to rely on the most primitive method to contact the brigade leader—writing letters.

By the time a letter was sent and returned, a month had gone by. Though Su Mingyue had so much she wanted to share with her parents, the long wait dulled the excitement.

Shen Xiuyan nodded. With such long delays, it was no wonder Mingyue was upset.

But as someone who always doted on his wife, how could he just let this slide? He reached out and ruffled Su Mingyue’s hair. “Have you forgotten what your husband does? I’ll take care of this little problem.”

Su Mingyue blinked her big eyes, completely trusting, without a hint of doubt. “You really can fix it? You’re the best, hubby—I’ll count on you then.”

    “Just sit back and wait.”

With Shen Xiuyan’s promise, Su Mingyue was delighted. In her heart, her husband was an omnipotent existence—she only had to wait patiently for the results.

Shen Xiuyan had been wondering what to develop next, and just like that, his wife gave him a direction. Whatever plans he had before didn’t matter anymore—of course he had to follow her lead!

He went straight back to the research institute and found Dean Qiu.

“Dean, assign me another lab. The first two have already been taken over by your people.”

Dean Qiu’s eyes lit up—did Shen Xiuyan have another new idea?

Without hesitation, he said, “Alright, have Wang Hua take you to Room 12—it’s currently unoccupied.”

Shen Xiuyan nodded and added, “Also, I need a brick phone.”

Dean Qiu sucked in a sharp breath. That thing had just come out on the market and wasn’t cheap—it cost around ten thousand yuan, and the research institute wasn’t exactly swimming in funds…

Over the years, they had poured in so much money without much output. It was tough.

Seeing the pained look on the dean’s face, Shen Xiuyan said coolly, “Don’t want to give it?”

Dean Qiu immediately shook his head and clutched his heart like a pitiful little man. “Go find Wang Hua—just tell him I approved it.”

If Shen Xiuyan wanted to do something, there had to be a reason. If he wanted a brick phone, maybe this new research had something to do with telecommunications.

If that was the case, they definitely couldn’t say no. Domestic communications had been falling behind for years.

Of course, he wouldn’t ask directly—didn’t want to put pressure on Shen Xiuyan. If he pushed too hard and the man decided to walk away, where would he find someone that talented again?

Shen Xiuyan was very satisfied with Dean Qiu’s attitude and left in a great mood.

With Wang Hua leading the way, he arrived at his new lab and got the precious brick phone.

He casually tossed it in his hand—this heavy thing didn’t belong in his wife’s hands.

He could have skipped the phone entirely, but creating one from scratch might be a bit too outrageous. At least with one on hand, he could take it apart and study it.

But he was thinking too simply. Even with a sample, others couldn’t build a working one—only he could pull off something that defied logic.

Developing a phone was complicated—it involved chips, software, even base stations.

He couldn’t just build an empty shell of a phone while the supporting infrastructure lagged behind. If it was for his wife, it had to be the best.

With this simple wish in mind, Shen Xiuyan buried himself in the lab once more, diving into full-on workaholic mode.

It got to the point that people from the other two labs were too scared to go in and ask questions—his expression was so severe it was like a black cloud looming over them. Every word they spoke seemed to interrupt his progress.

Even Wang Hua, his assistant, only dared to leave meals outside the door.

This couldn’t go on forever, or it would affect everyone’s learning progress. Thankfully, there was one exception.

Su Mingyue could enter and exit Shen Xiuyan’s lab freely.

That oppressive aura of his simply didn’t exist around her. He looked like a dog who just spotted a juicy bone—smiling so sweetly it made others sigh. Same man, different fate.

Some even wished they could be reborn as women—just to date Shen Xiuyan.

Nothing to do with preferences—they just wanted to experience what it was like to be doted on so completely.

That day, Su Mingyue stepped out of Shen Xiuyan’s lab carrying everyone’s hopes.

The moment she opened the door, she was met with a few eager faces.

“Comrade Su, how much longer until Xiuyan comes out? We’ve already fallen several days behind schedule.”

Dean Qiu also stood by with an awkward smile. “Staying holed up in there can’t be good for his health either… maybe ask him to take a break?”

He only dared to say that to Su Mingyue. He wouldn’t dare step inside—Shen Xiuyan’s dark expression was terrifying.

He had long accepted reality: if you weren’t Shen Xiuyan’s beloved wife, you didn’t get the spring breeze—you only got storm clouds.

Then again, it made sense. If someone kept barging in to interrupt you while you were laser-focused on your research, it’d be surprising if you didn’t curse them out.

So this humble group of people had no choice but to wait outside and beg Su Mingyue for help.

Su Mingyue truly was their savior—kind-hearted and easy to talk to.

Smiling brightly, she said, “I asked already—Brother Xiuyan said he’ll finish his experiment by the day after tomorrow at the latest, so I don’t plan to rush him. Why don’t you all hold on a little longer?”

Who said she was easy to talk to…

Her face wore the gentlest smile, but her words were cold as ice.

Boohoo… They had misjudged the situation. These two were perfectly in sync—what could they even do? Guess they had no choice but to endure.

    The crowd shuffled away helplessly.

Watching them go, Su Mingyue couldn’t help but shake her head. What a lively bunch of researchers—not at all what she had imagined of this solemn profession.
