Shen Xiuyan was a well-known figure at this school. He wasn’t quite a household name, but he was close.
As soon as Director Wang left, Chen Zhigang immediately approached Shen Xiuyan with a smile, striking up a conversation.
“What did you do this time? Director Wang looked like he saw a ghost! And weren’t you his favorite student? Why would he treat you like this???”
Shen Xiuyan rubbed his nose. “I just dabbled in a little research, that’s all.”
“Your hand.” Chen Zhigang reminded him not to lower it while peering curiously. “What kind of research could make him this mad?”
Shen Xiuyan jerked his chin. “Over there.”
The moment Chen Zhigang saw the computer, he too froze in place.
What! He made this?
What kind of joke was this?
And Shen Xiuyan actually called this thing “a little research”???
Was he insane…
Just as he was questioning reality—and his own existence—Director Wang returned, bringing with him a group of senior professors to rescue the situation.
Professor Zhao: “Slow down, slow down. My old bones… Honestly, I thought Old Wang was pulling our leg—”
The moment his eyes landed on the computer sitting on the desk, whatever he was about to say completely vanished into thin air, as if swallowed whole.
“Th-this… what is this?” The very professor who had just complained about his old bones suddenly dashed forward with startling agility.
He looked at the machine as if it were a peerless treasure, daring only to admire it from afar without touching it.
The other professors filed in and swarmed forward as well.
“Oh my god, where did this come from?”
“Yeah, Old Wang, did you call us over just to show us this?”
Hiss— “Has the state developed some kind of black tech again? Who’s the genius behind this?”
Director Wang, seeing the professors all staring at him in disbelief, hesitantly asked, “Isn’t this something from the computer science department?”
A professor from the computer science department shook his head vigorously. “Are you kidding? Compared to this, our department’s two computers are junkyard scrap! Where on earth did this come from?”
Director Wang turned around in disbelief and pointed. “He said… he built it himself…”
“WHAT!!” Multiple voices cried out in astonishment.
“Old Wang, this isn’t the time to joke.”
“Seriously. Some things you just can’t joke about.”
“I’m not joking!” Director Wang explained loudly. “I approved a lab for Shen Xiuyan a while back. He said he wanted to work on some research. But then he stopped showing up to class for several days, so I came by to check on him. That’s when I saw this. I thought he’d stolen it from the computer science department! And then he was typing all these weird symbols into it—so I thought maybe he was some kind of enemy agent, and I called you all over to check.”
The senior professors: “You’re telling the truth?”
Director Wang nodded emphatically. “Absolutely. If you don’t believe me, ask him.”
All eyes gleamed as they shifted to Shen Xiuyan.
Shen Xiuyan nodded. “It’s true—but only half true. I developed the computer. I didn’t steal it. And those ‘weird symbols’ aren’t gibberish—I was writing software.”
“Old Wu, you know this stuff. Go take a look.”
Professor Wu quickly stepped forward and pushed up his glasses. “Yes, he’s writing code… but I can’t understand what he’s writing…”
The professors: “……”
That’s exactly how it should be. If you could understand it, then he wouldn’t be someone who could invent a computer.
At this point, they already believed that Shen Xiuyan was the one who built this machine.
After all, if he could make one, he could make another. This sort of thing couldn’t be faked—it was easy to test. And he wasn’t the type to cook up a lie this elaborate and prone to exposure.
Besides, what kind of enemy agent would be stupid enough to give them this level of technology?
Crazy, right?
Just looking at its exterior, some of them were tempted to say something outrageous—they weren’t even sure other countries had reached this level of tech…
One senior professor asked excitedly, “Wait a minute—isn’t this year’s top scorer Shen Xiuyan?”
Director Wang nodded. “That’s him.”
Hiss— “The younger generation is truly formidable. Truly formidable!” The professors began showering him with praise.
Director Wang stood dumbfounded. From the tone of their voices, it seemed they really believed Shen Xiuyan built the computer?
Professor Zhao looked at the confusion in Director Wang’s eyes and sighed. “What were you thinking? What country in their right mind would send us a gift like this?”
Director Wang: “……”
Now that he thought about it… yeah… What was he thinking?
His face hurt.
It was burning hot.
Who was it just now who said even a dog wouldn’t believe it? Oh—right, that was him…
One of the old professors looked at Shen Xiuyan with a mix of sympathy and affection. “I’ve been meaning to ask, young man, why have you been holding your hand up this whole time? Were you exercising after working too hard?”
Shen Xiuyan blinked. “No, the director told me to keep it up and not move. It’s completely numb by now, okay?”
“WHAT!”
“Utter nonsense!”
“Old Wang, you’re a grown man. You can eat whatever you like, but you can’t spout whatever nonsense you want.”
“Exactly! This young man’s hands are priceless! What if something happens—can you afford to pay for it?”
The professors erupted in collective outrage, berating Director Wang harshly.
Knowing he was in the wrong, Director Wang shrank back and didn’t even dare breathe too loudly.
Seeing his pitiful state, the professors quickly lost interest in scolding him and turned back around with beaming smiles, their blatant favoritism written all over their faces.
“Oh dear, young man, hurry and put your hand down.”
“Tired? Want me to give you a little massage?”
“Don’t be shy. If anything were to happen to your hands, that’d be a catastrophe.”
“Yes, yes! Even if Little Wang died ten times, it wouldn’t be enough to make up for it.”
Director Wang: “……”
Small. Humble. Helpless.
Someone save him.
He could see the tenderness in the professors’ eyes—so clear and overflowing it was unstoppable.
It was as if they were thinking, Wow, this young man can even breathe on his own—how impressive!
He was sure that even if Shen Xiuyan pointed at a deer and called it a horse right now, they’d all blindly believe him.
But no one spared the pitiful Director Wang another glance. The professors had already invited Shen Xiuyan to sit down in front of the computer.
Professor Wu spoke up. “Young man, can you demonstrate it for us? Show us how it’s different from the two machines we have at the school.”
Shen Xiuyan laughed to himself. “I was writing a program earlier, but Director Wang interrupted me—so it’s not finished yet.”
The professors looked disappointed.
All because of Old Wang. This guy couldn’t get anything right—just knew how to waste the young man’s precious time.
Didn’t he understand that this young man’s time wasn’t just time—it was pure money?
