    Chapter 60: ?? World (4)

“Friend, do you know what I’ve discovered?”

Upon returning to class for a physics lesson, the system provided a narration: “Because of his restless heart, Lin Yuetian couldn’t focus on class.” Taking this as a kind of special pardon, Lin Yuetian began speaking gently—though one-sidedly—to the system.

“Lin Yuetian muttered to himself in his mind,” the system narrated.

“First, your narrations aren’t fixed but are actually generated based on the original character’s persona. This means you’re not personally trying to mess with me—it’s just the rules of the interview process,” Lin Yuetian reasoned. “So, if I can come up with an explanation for my actions that aligns with my character setting, you’ll start parroting my reasoning and justifying my behavior.”

“Lin Yuetian muttered to himself in his mind again,” the system repeated.

“Second, when I used the hacking skills I bought from the system shop to crack Su Huaiyu’s phone password, your narration described it as some kind of mysterious talent of mine,” Lin Yuetian continued analyzing. “This proves that even though I currently can’t access the shop, all the tools and skills I previously purchased are still available for use—they just get rationalized when I use them. Obviously, the original character wouldn’t be proficient in hacking, so you had to explain it away as a mysterious talent. This actually confirms that my purchased items and skills can be used outside of my character’s limitations—I don’t have to be overly constrained.”

“Lin Yuetian muttered to himself in his mind once more,” the system droned.

“In short, I now have a complete plan,” Lin Yuetian declared decisively.

“Lin Yuetian still muttered to himself in his mind,” the system added.

“Okay, I get that you weren’t originally trying to mess with me, but now you’re just being petty, aren’t you?”

“Lin Yuetian persistently muttered to himself in his mind.”

Lin Yuetian shrugged, pretending he didn’t hear the system’s passive-aggressive commentary. He spent the rest of the school day slacking off and was surprised to find that this school didn’t have evening self-study sessions, further solidifying his suspicion that this game was probably made in Japan. The system didn’t respond to his speculation, only using its narration to urge him to get moving.

After school, Lin Yuetian got into Wang Yunzhi’s car.

Wang Yunzhi was a year older than Lin Yuetian and already an adult. Technically, he was eligible for a driver’s license, but Lin Yuetian was still curious about how old Wang Yunzhi had been before he was reborn—he didn’t exactly trust a high school graduate’s driving skills…

“When it comes to the finer details of a mission, I still value my life,” Lin Yuetian explained to himself.

Of course, Wang Yunzhi had no idea what was going through Lin Yuetian’s mind. With a complex and serious expression, he drove them to a small motel near the school. Lin Yuetian quickly realized that this was because the original character was still underage, and these small motels didn’t check IDs as strictly.

“Thoughtful of you,” Lin Yuetian commented. “You really go all out when it comes to this kind of thing.”

While Wang Yunzhi was registering at the front desk, Su Huaiyu’s phone rang in Lin Yuetian’s pocket. When he picked up, it was Su Huaiyu’s voice—he’d probably borrowed a parent’s phone to call.

Su Huaiyu asked, “Hello, the phone you have belongs to me. Did you happen to pick it up somewhere by accident? There’s a lot of important information on it—could you return it as soon as possible?”

The system cleared its throat and began narrating:

“Hearing this, Lin Yuetian couldn’t help but feel three parts guilty, three parts self-loathing, and four parts inferior. He resolved to return the phone immediately—”

“Wait a minute,” Lin Yuetian cut in without hesitation, his mind racing with analysis. “Don’t forget, I’m deeply in love with Wang Yunzhi. Right now, I’m literally about to get a room with him. I love him so much—would I really leave him waiting for me? No way, right? But at the same time, I do feel three parts guilty, three parts self-loathing, and four parts inferior, so I do want to return the phone as soon as possible. That means it would make perfect sense for me to ask Su Huaiyu to meet me here to return it, right? However, Su Huaiyu is my romantic rival—would I let him have even the slightest chance of seeing Wang Yunzhi? No way, right?”

    The system: “…”

Lin Yuetian smiled. “So, it’s perfectly reasonable for me to ask Su Huaiyu to come to the motel to retrieve his phone while making sure Wang Yunzhi doesn’t run into him, right?”

The system suddenly had a bad feeling, as if Lin Yuetian was about to pull off another bizarre stunt. It hesitantly narrated:

“For various complex emotions and intricate considerations, Lin Yuetian—just like the frantic inner monologue in his mind—decided to act accordingly. However, in reality, people who constantly talk to themselves in their minds often have psychological issues. Perhaps what Lin Yuetian truly needs is a therapist—after all, he’s still young.”

Lin Yuetian: “Did you just sneak in a personal jab?”

    The system fell silent.

Lin Yuetian hung up without saying another word. He didn’t plan to let Su Huaiyu confirm his identity before they met—doing so might interfere with his plan. Though Su Huaiyu probably didn’t recognize his voice, Lin Yuetian wasn’t willing to take that risk.

Wang Yunzhi returned with a room key—third floor. Lin Yuetian glanced at it, then sent Su Huaiyu a text with the motel’s address, telling him to meet at the third floor. Putting away the phone, he followed Wang Yunzhi up the stairs. (This motel didn’t even have an elevator.)

“Walking into the room and looking at Wang Yunzhi’s face, Lin Yuetian felt both nervous and delighted. He wanted to say a few sweet words to express his feelings.”

Lin Yuetian played along: “You shower first.”

A bit blunt, perhaps, but it still counted as sweet talk—after all, the system didn’t warn him that he was contradicting the narration.

Then, while Wang Yunzhi was in the shower, Lin Yuetian took out a narcotic candle he hadn’t finished using since his time in the Stand-In World. He lit it.

    “???”

The system didn’t say anything, but in his mind, it started playing classic slapstick sound effects from Tom and Jerry to express its sheer fury and confusion.

“The items purchased from the System Mall can’t be identified and will automatically be rationalized, so you don’t have to make up excuses—it’s too tiring. I’m considerate of you. I’ve already made up a cover myself—let’s just say I bought it as an aromatic candle from the supermarket. Anyway, right now, I’m both shy and happy, both nervous and excited, so it’s completely normal for me to light a few scented candles to set the mood, right?” Lin Yuetian said gently.

The system started playing the comedic sound effect from Tom and Jerry when Tom gets owned. Lin Yuetian wasn’t sure what emotion it was trying to convey. He listened carefully for a while but still found it too abstract to decipher.

The anesthetic candle was an unstoppable force in a world that, at least on the surface, was still a normal high school setting. Since he had already lit it, the only thing left to do was wait.

Lin Yuetian timed it carefully. In less than thirty seconds, there was a muffled thud from the bathroom.

Leisurely, Lin Yuetian opened the bathroom door and saw Wang Yunzhi collapsed on the floor. He dramatically shouted in horror, “Yunzhi! What happened to you?”

    Wang Yunzhi groaned in pain. “I don’t know why… I can’t move…”

“Could it be a stroke?” Lin Yuetian asked with concern.

System: “……Seeing his beloved suddenly collapse, Lin Yuetian was anxious beyond words. He hurriedly helped Wang Yunzhi onto the bed and decided to go out and find a doctor to help him fight off the illness.”

Lin Yuetian followed the narration to the letter, as obedient as could be. But he didn’t extinguish the candle. Instead, he casually placed Su Huaiyu’s phone on the nightstand before leaving the room—without even bothering to dress Wang Yunzhi.

He walked out with absolutely no intention of finding a doctor, clearly willing to let Wang Yunzhi be defeated by his ‘illness.’ Standing by a third-floor window, Lin Yuetian gazed down at the front entrance through the glass.

“I was so shocked that I froze on the spot. Just standing here in a daze for a moment out of sheer shock is perfectly reasonable, right?” Lin Yuetian said.

Only when Su Huaiyu finally appeared at the entrance did Lin Yuetian start dashing down the stairs. He deliberately ran as fast as possible and, as expected, crashed hard into Su Huaiyu right at the doorway.

“Who?!—It’s you?” Su Huaiyu stared at Lin Yuetian in surprise. Lin Yuetian appropriately displayed a mix of guilt and shock before turning and bolting without a word.

Once he was out of Su Huaiyu’s line of sight, Lin Yuetian casually patted his pocket and calmly told the system, “I was so anxious that, when I bumped into Su Huaiyu, I accidentally dropped the room keycard. That’s totally normal too, right?”
