No Ulterior Motives C56
by MarineTLChapter 56: The Surprise from Top Entertainment
Haicheng.
2:45 PM.
In the editorial department of Top Entertainment Company.
With the upcoming release of a new single, Liao Liao was so busy that she barely had time to stop moving.
She had just returned from the accounting department when she seemed to remember something. She immediately called out to a girl typing at a desk outside the office: “Xiao Li, revise the press release for Chen Yu.”
“Start by emphasizing the meaning behind the song’s lyrics. Make sure to highlight Chen Yu’s new persona.”
Having said that, as she entered her office, someone quickly followed her inside.
“Liao Liao jie! General Manager Guo has called for an impromptu upper management meeting.”
Upon hearing this, Liao Liao turned around with an annoyed look and glared at Xiao Tuan.
“Those old fogeys, can’t they see my high heels will break from running?!”
“Another meeting!?”
Slightly wronged by the sudden reprimand, Xiao Tuan gave a few hesitant nods, then shrank back, standing awkwardly by the door.
“Liao Liao jie…”
“There are only three minutes left until General Manager Guo’s meeting…”
Hearing the time, Liao Liao, who had just sat down, slammed her palm on the table in frustration.
She let out a muffled grunt.
“Let’s go!”
“I’ll see what those guys are up to this time!”
Three minutes later.
In the meeting room.
Liao Liao sat calmly in a chair, her legs crossed, playing with a black fountain pen in her hand.
Her dexterity made the pen spin so fast it created a blur.
At that moment, the door to the meeting room opened.
Two stylishly dressed middle-aged people walked in.
One was the general manager of Top Entertainment, Guo Xiangyang.
The other was the head of the project department, Dan Fang, who was known as the top talent scout.
The first one was fine. Although Liao Liao was his subordinate, they generally worked well together.
But the latter was different.
They were of the same rank, but their personalities and future plans made their relationship as fiery as water and fire.
Whenever Liao Liao proposed something, Dan Fang would always cause trouble.
Similarly, whenever Dan Fang had an idea, Liao Liao would certainly find a way to disrupt it.
Just like this time.
Liao Liao had worked hard to secure a song for Chen Yu, but Dan Fang had blocked her at every step.
She was constantly accused of wasting money on trivial things, and there were rumors about shady dealings.
This made Liao Liao extremely angry.
And now, with the pre-release for the new song nearly completed, Dan Fang was again trying to stir things up.
Thinking of this, Liao Liao’s face darkened.
As expected.
Before the meeting had even started, Dan Fang threw a folder onto Liao Liao’s desk.
“Liao Liao, you’re something else.”
“You spent 150,000 from the company to buy a song from a minor high school student.”
“Is she Master Lu?”
“Is she really worth that much?”
“Or are you just setting up a scheme with someone to embezzle the company’s money?”
This comment made things serious.
It could be something that might get them taken away by the inspection bureau.
Liao Liao immediately slammed the table and coldly replied:
“Dan Fang, speak with evidence.”
“I’m sure everyone here has heard the quality of the song ‘Passing Through the Mortal World’.”
“If I were involved in any fraudulent activity, why would I use such a high-quality song?”
However, Dan Fang selectively ignored Liao Liao’s explanation and immediately countered:
“Ha! You really have intentions to embezzle from the company!”
“Do you believe I can call the police and have you arrested right now?”
“Go ahead and try!” Liao Liao was not one to back down. She slammed the table and stood up, pointing at Dan Fang’s nose, and shouted:
“Don’t think I don’t know you’ve been using company allowances to support your little man!”
“Staying in hotels while claiming business travel expenses!”
As the conversation grew more heated, Guo Xiangyang slammed the table and coldly ordered:
“Both of you, shut up!”
“This meeting isn’t for airing your dirty laundry!”
Hearing the boss’s command, Liao Liao and Dan Fang reluctantly stopped arguing. After exchanging angry glares, they sat back down.
At this moment, Guo Xiangyang turned his gaze to a middle-aged man sitting at the back of the room.
“Li Qiang, go ahead.”
The middle-aged man nodded and said:
“As everyone knows, we’ve invested considerable resources to promote Chen Yu.”
“But our competitor, Lion King Entertainment, has similarly pushed Zhao Yuanyuan as their competitor.”
“They even made a big investment to buy a famous song to compete with us.”
At this point, Li Qiang paused and said in a deep voice:
“However, according to my informant…”
“Lion King Entertainment’s lead track isn’t the only one. They even bought two more strong tracks from Master Lu.”
Hearing this, the entire meeting room erupted in chatter.
Chen Yu’s song was already less popular than Lion King Entertainment’s main track, but now they found that their competitor had more songs.
If everything followed the normal process from pre-release to launch, and they only had one track while their competitor had three, it would definitely be a failure for Top Entertainment.
When the board of directors came down with questions, no one would be able to avoid the consequences.
For a moment, the senior executives in the meeting room began to panic, speaking up one after another.
Some questioned the reliability of Li Qiang’s information.
Others asked if the warehouse department had any backup music ready.
Some even blamed Liao Liao for the song purchase issue, saying that if they had bought directly from Master Lu, Lion King Entertainment wouldn’t have been able to get the other two songs.
This infuriated Liao Liao, her face burning with anger. She immediately retorted:
“At least I spent 150,000 to get a main song!”
“And what about you!?”
As the meeting room started to feel like a chaotic marketplace, Guo Xiangyang rubbed his temples and tapped the table.
“Enough.”
His first attempt to calm the room failed as his voice was too soft.
Annoyed, he raised his voice and growled:
“Shut the hell up!!”
The room fell silent instantly.
However, at that moment, a phone rang loudly in the quiet room, startling everyone.
Liao Liao, whose phone it was, noticed Guo Xiangyang’s furious glare and sheepishly picked up her phone.
She awkwardly prepared to hang up.
However, when she saw the phone number, her finger froze.
Frowning, she paused for a moment, and then, without thinking, answered the call.
“Xiao Jiang Jiang, what made you think of calling your sister at this time?”
Upon hearing this address, Guo Xiangyang immediately stopped Dan Fang from cursing, signaling everyone in the room to be quiet.
At this moment, Liao Liao put the call on speakerphone and placed the phone on the table.
Everyone in the meeting room wondered what she was doing.
After a brief pause, a clear voice came from the speaker.
“Sorry to interrupt.”
“A classical song, [Hard to Let Go], dedicated to everyone.”
“I hope you all enjoy it.”
