No Ulterior Motives C147
by MarineTLChapter 147: Do You Often Struggle with Not Having Enough to Eat?
To her friends, Jin Yueshi was a bottomless pit.
To her relatives, she was a sickly little girl.
But in her own eyes—
She simply had a slightly bigger appetite than most people.
Yet it was this “slightly” that had caused her a lot of trouble ever since she started working after graduation.
Don’t be fooled by her height of just 160 cm and a weight of 95 pounds.
Her appetite—one pound of rice and six burgers per meal—meant her expenses were far higher than the average person’s.
It was Monday.
Jin Yueshi, like always, went to “Shi Ning Ji,” a nearby food joint, to get her midday snack.
She used to buy buns from fast food places.
But those buns were expensive and not filling.
She had to eat over ten of them just to feel full.
Ever since “Shi Ning Ji” opened,
Three burgers for ten yuan.
Two wings for five yuan.
Whether in price or variety, the place gave her a whole new experience compared to the past.
Gradually,
She got used to buying a few burgers and wings there every afternoon.
But today,
When she arrived at the entrance,
She was surprised to see a line forming.
Though the shop had always done good business,
She hadn’t seen a line going out the door since opening day.
That puzzled her.
Did they launch a new combo?
Or maybe something like a McDonald’s promo?
With that curiosity,
Jin Yueshi joined the end of the line.
But after a while,
She realized this line wasn’t for regular orders.
Because she saw a burly man at the front of the line walk past her—holding a hamburger the size of a washbasin.
What?
A super-sized burger combo?
Jin Yueshi froze.
Then her stomach growled in protest.
At that moment,
She saw a familiar server waving.
“Xiao Yang!”
Yang Mingliang, who was cleaning up some leftovers, turned at the call.
He recognized her immediately.
Putting down his work and wiping his hands, he walked over to her.
“Sister Jin, what’s up?”
Jin Yueshi pointed to the line ahead of her and asked with confusion,
“Are you guys doing some kind of promotion?”
“Oh, that.”
Yang Mingliang pulled out a flyer from his pocket and handed it over.
Jin Yueshi took the flyer and looked down.
[Do you often struggle with not having enough to eat?]
[Do you often lie awake at night with hunger pangs?]
[To end your suffering, and help you stop tossing and turning in the night—]
[‘Shi Ning Ji’ is now offering a ¥48 Super Burger Challenge: Eat for Free!]
[Finish it in one go, and you’ll get a full refund.]
[Note: Voucher can only be used at the Shi Ning Ji Times Square branch. Cannot be used again on the same meal combo.]
At that moment,
Jin Yueshi felt like this “Shi Ning Ji” existed just for her.
The food, the staff’s considerate service, and now this event—
Pay ¥48 for a burger, finish it, and get a ¥48 voucher.
She could use the voucher for other meals later.
Even though she couldn’t use it again for the same burger challenge, and it had an expiration date—
For someone with her natural appetite,
This event was practically tailor-made.
So when her turn in line came,
Jin Yueshi could barely contain her excitement.
She paid,
Took a tray from the cashier, which held a medium-sized soda and a beef burger nearly as big as her face.
“Thank you.”
After a polite nod, she found the closest seat and sat down.
Before eating,
She glanced around.
There were quite a few others taking on the Super Burger Challenge.
But it didn’t look like anyone had managed to finish.
Seeing that,
Jin Yueshi showed a rare sneer of contempt.
Then she lowered her head—
And dug in.
One bite, two bites, three bites.
She wasn’t eating a burger—she was consuming fulfillment.
For the first time, she could eat freely.
And for the first time, she stuffed her stomach to the brim.
By the time she finished the last bit of bun on her tray,
Before she could even sigh—
A round of applause rang out beside her.
Jin Yueshi looked up,
Confused by the group of staff clapping in front of her.
Before she could figure it out,
That same staffer, Yang, handed her a card and some vouchers.
“Dear Miss Jin,”
“Congratulations on becoming the first Super Burger Champion of our shop!”
“To honor that, we’re giving you a VIP card.”
“With this card, you’ll enjoy a 34% discount at all ‘Shi Ning Ji’ locations.”
“Thirty-four percent?” Jin Yueshi took the card in shock.
Looking down,
The gold-embossed card not only had the “Shi Ning Ji” logo but also a piglet mascot and the number 00000165.
As Jin Yueshi accepted her VIP card, numbered 165,
A certain Miss Jiang was slipping a card numbered 002 into Qi Wen’s hand during free time in PE class.
“What’s this?”
“A ‘Shi Ning Ji’ VIP card! You get discounts!”
“‘Shi Ning Ji’? That fried chicken place?” Qi Wen clearly had heard of it.
“How’d you get a VIP card from them?”
“Don’t worry about it.” Jiang raised her chin proudly.
“Well? Aren’t you going to praise me?”
“Amazing,” Qi Wen gave a light compliment.
But the next second, she looked troubled:
“But I don’t eat fried chicken…”
“My mom says fried food messes with your figure…”
That may be true—
But Jiang was still a little disappointed.
Noticing this,
Little Miss Qi giggled and slipped the card into her pocket.
“I won’t eat it, but I can buy it for a certain pig to eat.”
At that,
Old Man Jiang’s brows shot up.
“Who are you calling a pig?”
“Whoever responds is the pig!”
“You brat, looks like your butt’s itchy!”
With that, Jiang Ning rolled up her sleeves, ready to pounce.
But just then,
Sun Qian suddenly ran over and waved to the squabbling pair:
“Come quick!”
“Mr. Wu is looking for the Big Black Guy!”
Huh?!
In a flash,
Whether it was the bickering Jiang and Qi Wen, or Zhu Hui who was sketching on the grass nearby, or Luo Shanshan who was napping on her homework—
They all jumped in shock.
Their eyes widened as they stared at Sun Qian.
“Seriously?”
“Of course I’m serious!”
“Wanna go see?”
“Let’s go!”
One word.
The girls all scrambled up from the grass and followed Sun Qian toward the equipment room behind the track.
The equipment room—
A.k.a. the PE teacher’s office.
The school had four PE teachers, each with their own office.
Big Black Guy’s office was right at the front of the basketball equipment room behind the track.
Though it wasn’t their first time there,
The girls still pinched their noses as they neared.
The smell was intense.
No wonder the PE teachers were always “getting sick.”
They were probably smoked into it.
Just as the girls approached the office,
They heard bits of an ongoing argument coming from inside.
“You don’t see what those kids are spreading right now… you and I…”
“Teacher Tang… I think it’s necessary…”
“Old Wu… it’s not necessary… my conduct is upright…”
As they listened, the girls suddenly realized that Wu Xiaobai’s tone had begun to show emotion.
His voice rose several decibels.
“Teacher Tang!”
“I advise you not to be so muddleheaded…”
But before he could finish, they heard Black Tall Guy speak in a voice full of disgust:
“Don’t lump me together with…!”
“I’m starting to suspect that you…”
“Don’t be disgusting…”
The more they heard, the more off it felt. The girls instinctively exchanged glances.
In each other’s eyes, they saw the flames of gossip burning.
But just as they tried to listen more closely and took a few steps forward—
A crisp slapping sound rang out.
