Chapter 40: The Interstellar Marshal Who Doesn’t Save the Female Lead

Jiujiu hid inside his dad’s clothes, feeling more and more uneasy the more he thought about it, and carefully poked his head out again.

Shen Yijing noticed his little movement, looked down at him, and asked:

“What’s wrong? Are you hungry? You don’t need to worry about those things. It’s my freedom how I spend the money I earn. I’m happy to give it to you to eat.”

Even if it cost so much money, just to see Jiujiu shake his head contentedly and burp after eating his fill, Shen Yijing felt it was well worth it.

“Not hungry, but Dad, I’ve been hiding something from you, and now I think I should be honest with you.”

“What is it? Tell me about it?”

Although Shen Yijing said that, he didn’t think such a small bird could be hiding anything big from him.

“I wasn’t researched in the Research Institute; I mutated on my own.”

    “Mutated?”

Shen Yijing was previously thinking if this little one might have secretly eaten something or some other small matter, but he didn’t expect it to be this. This could indeed be considered a big deal.

“That’s right, how could those stupid people research such a smart bird like me!”

In this world, Jiujiu had taken over an identity. That bird had already died due to failed research. The various operations of those people made even a “scum-bird” like Jiujiu feel a headache.

    “That’s true.”

After hearing him say that, Shen Yijing inexplicably felt a sense of realism. Given some of the things the research lab had done, it was truly hard to believe they could research anything decent.

Not to mention a bird that could treat Mental Power damage. For such a big matter, if they didn’t report it every minute, they would truly be letting themselves down.

“Dad, you can’t dislike your little one because of this, and you can’t abandon Jiujiu.”

The dad in this world was perfect, so perfect he was like a dummy, without any particularly unique personality.

For most people, getting along with someone with such a personality was easy and pleasant, but Jiujiu only felt scared.

“Okay, I won’t dislike you, and I won’t abandon you.”

Shen Yijing gently stroked his feathers. He had already been disappointed by many things the King had done and had planned to leave after completing all his unfinished missions.

But now, looking at it, even to protect this little Jiujiu, he couldn’t do that.

    “Dad is so good.”

Jiujiu gently pecked his dad, and after he finished, Shen Yijing also lowered his head and kissed his head, making Jiujiu shyly cover his head with his wings.

Shen Yijing recovered very well and left the hospital soon after, returning to his home on Imperial Star.

Before arriving at that place, Shen Yijing turned and instructed Jiujiu not to act too smart there.

    “Why, Dad?”

Jiujiu tilted his head and asked curiously, but secretly he was delighted, thinking, “So Dad really thinks I’m smart!”

“There are surveillance cameras from the King here.”

The King had to rely on every Marshal to protect the peace of all the people in the Empire, and likewise, he deeply feared the Marshals’ power.

Shen Yijing’s ability was very strong, so strong that he noticed something was off when the King first installed the surveillance cameras.

But to reassure the King, he didn’t say anything, though he still had some reservations in his heart.

The King feared his power, which Shen Yijing could understand, but what he couldn’t understand was why the King had to monitor his private life. This only caused Shen Yijing’s extreme disgust.

Every Marshal before him was the same; they were dissatisfied with the King’s actions, but for the sake of more ordinary people, they had no choice but to compromise.

“Oh, Dad, why don’t we rebel?”

Jiujiu said this casually, just like in the previous world, where he just slept, and his dad had already finished rebelling. If his dad hadn’t come to call him, he wouldn’t even have known.

“Not really. I don’t have the ability to govern an empire.”

From childhood, Shen Yijing had only learned how to be a qualified Marshal, but he had never learned how to be a good King.

That thought had not been absent from his mind, but he had forcibly suppressed it himself.

    “Alright then.”

After his dad refused, Jiujiu didn’t bring it up again, but he still felt a bit unhappy. Having such a bad guy as King was worse than having a Little Chubby Bird like him.

Shen Yijing would be leaving soon and was only staying here temporarily. The room looked like a hotel, with no trace of daily life.

Jiujiu searched carefully but couldn’t find any snacks in his dad’s house. He couldn’t help but peck his dad’s finger, hoping his dad would notice his dissatisfaction.

“Good boy, there will be some. I’ll have someone send them over later.”

Shen Yijing sensed his dissatisfaction and immediately contacted his subordinate, asking him to buy some tasty snacks for him.

The subordinate was a bit confused when he received this message from the Marshal. The Marshal, at first glance, didn’t seem like someone who would enjoy such snacks.

But then he thought about it and remembered that little chubby bird. To raise it so round, it must have taken a lot of effort.

A large bag of snacks was delivered to the door. Jiujiu, upon seeing them, wished he could just dive in and not come out. After rolling around, he was picked up by his dad.

“Will eating too much have any impact on your health?”

    “No, Dad, I’m mutated!”

Jiujiu flapped his wings and patted his chest. There were some things he couldn’t tell the dad in this world, but he was very skilled at fabricating a very reliable excuse.

“Are you sure there’s really no problem?”

    “Really no problem!”

Shen Yijing opened a bag of potato chips. Snacks made from natural plant ingredients like these were usually very expensive. Jiujiu stuck his head in as soon as he tore it open.

Later, it seemed like eating that way wasn’t very convenient, so he kicked his little paws, and his whole body burrowed inside, sitting there and eating frantically.

The subordinate, who hadn’t left yet, saw this scene and couldn’t help but sigh inwardly, “Indeed, I wasn’t wrong back then. A bird this round must be a big eater!”

“Expected to return the day after tomorrow. You can pack and prepare yourself.”

“Okay, Marshal. Are you taking this bird with you? There’s no Natural Food there.”

Shen Yijing hadn’t thought about this problem before. Now, after being reminded by his subordinate, he realized that this was indeed a bit difficult. He couldn’t let such a small little one suffer by his side.

“I want to follow Dad, even if it means drinking nasty nutrient fluid!”

Compared to food, Jiujiu felt that following his dad was the most important thing. If he really craved something, he still had the small space given to him by Star Lord. Star Lord would regularly put food in it, so he would definitely not starve.

    “It’s fine.”

Shen Yijing was not used to living under surveillance and only stayed for a short time before leaving. When he returned to the place he was guarding, many comrades came to greet him.

    “Captain, you’re finally back.”

Those who were closer still habitually called him Captain. They had been on missions together for many years and immediately noticed the little bird perched on the Captain’s shoulder.

“Captain, is this the new species researched by the Research Institute? It certainly looks a bit unusual.”

Jiujiu covered his head with his wings, not really wanting to talk to them. He didn’t know if these people had something special on them, but he always felt a headache when they got close.

Shen Yijing noticed Jiujiu’s discomfort and found an excuse to return to the dormitory. This place clearly looked like someone lived there.

    “What’s wrong? Don’t you like them, or…?”

“Dad, they’re all so strange. They feel off. My head feels heavy when I’m near them.”

Jiujiu lay there feeling uncomfortable. After rubbing his head with his wings, he skillfully burrowed into the pocket of his dad’s shirt.

“Hmm? Heavy head? I’ll hold it for you for a bit.”

“Dad, stop messing around. Is there something wrong with their bodies?”

Shen Yijing was about to tease him, but his expression instantly became serious after hearing that. Those who went on missions with him had basically been to very dangerous places, causing irreversible damage to their bodies.

The last time they gathered, they even said they didn’t know how much longer they could stay in this place.

After Jiujiu spoke, he became even more convinced in his heart that there must be something wrong, otherwise he wouldn’t feel so uncomfortable.

In this world, to make Jiujiu’s life easier and to prevent him from attracting too much attention, Star Lord had enhanced his talent for healing Mental Power injuries.

Jiujiu himself was completely unaware of this. He was certain that Star Lord would never harm him. Even if Star Lord held a knife to his neck, he would believe that Star Lord was just trying to tickle him.

“Yes, there is. They, like me, also have Mental Power damage and have been taking medication to suppress the effects of the pain.”

It was only suppression, not a cure. Until suitable new recruits were found, they couldn’t leave unless they completely lost their combat ability.

Suppression would only worsen their injuries, and they knew this but had no other choice.

Shen Yijing wondered if it was because he had been healed, but he always felt that he had become much stronger than before.

Every time he thought about this, his mind would subconsciously recall the blood that appeared on Jiujiu’s wings in the restaurant that day.

“Dad, are you on good terms with them?”

As a generous little bird, Jiujiu didn’t mind working a bit harder, provided that those people had a good relationship with his dad.

Even if he let himself be lazy to death here, he would absolutely not help people his dad disliked.
