Inside the car.
As he drove, Wang Hua greeted them warmly. “Hello, Uncle, Auntie. I’m Teacher Shen’s assistant—my name is Wang Hua. You can just call me Xiao Wang. If you ever need anything, feel free to reach out to me.”
“Hello,” Liu Yanyun replied with a nod, her demeanor noble and aloof.
Su Brigade Leader also responded with calm composure, “Thank you for taking care of our Xiuyan all this time.”
“It’s no trouble at all. It’s my duty,” Wang Hua replied, glancing at the two of them through the rearview mirror.
Both of them wore serious expressions, showing no signs of excitement.
Wang Hua took a deep breath. As expected, anyone worthy of being Teacher Shen’s in-laws was no ordinary person.
Though they were from the countryside, they carried themselves with such poise and confidence—you’d never guess they were new to the big city.
In his heart, Wang Hua gave them a silent thumbs-up.
Seeing the silence stretch on, Su Brigade Leader began quietly inspecting the car.
When no one was looking, he quickly touched the door, then the window, a look of fascination creeping across his face.
No one else seemed to notice, but Liu Yanyun had been watching him like a hawk the entire time.
When she saw the old man’s grin turn lecherous, and even a hint of drool at the corner of his mouth, she reached over and pinched the inside of his thigh.
“Ow—hey!” Su Brigade Leader yelped in pain.
Shen Xiuyan, sitting in the front seat, turned around. “Dad, what happened?”
Su Brigade Leader forced a laugh. “Nothing, nothing. Sat too long—my leg cramped up. I’ll be fine after a short walk.”
Shen Xiuyan didn’t think much of it and turned back around.
Su Brigade Leader gave Liu Yanyun a pitiful look.
She narrowed her long, almond-shaped eyes at him, and he immediately straightened up in his seat, adopting his most dignified posture.
Yes, he couldn’t embarrass Xiuyan.
By the time they arrived safely at the small Western-style house, Liu Yanyun could barely hold it in anymore.
Thankfully, Wang Hua didn’t linger—after dropping them off, he returned to the research institute—so her noble and icy image remained intact.
The moment they stepped inside, Liu Yanyun collapsed onto the sofa without a care for appearances. “Aaaaah, I thought I was going to explode!”
Su Mingyue rushed over to help her catch her breath. She knew it—there was no way her mom could stay that composed for long.
Liu Yanyun finally broke into a grin and grabbed Su Mingyue’s hand excitedly. “Tell me, how did your dad and I do just now? We didn’t embarrass you and Xiuyan, did we?”
Shen Xiuyan leaned over with a smile. “Not at all. You and Dad were amazing. Didn’t you see how imposing you looked just now? Your aura was at least three meters tall. You scared Xiao Wang so much he barely dared to speak!”
Liu Yanyun laughed. “You little rascal, still such a smooth talker.”
Seeing how cozy the conversation had become, Su Brigade Leader cleared his throat and asked the question that had been burning in his mind.
“Ahem, Xiuyan… are we really going to live here from now on?”
Shen Xiuyan shook his head with a smile. “Of course not. This house is just for the two of you. Mingyue and I live a few buildings over, and a bit further down the road is where my parents live. For now, just rest up. Tomorrow I’ll arrange for you to meet them.”
Su Brigade Leader and Liu Yanyun’s eyes widened.
What? This whole Western-style house was just for the two of them? That was way too extravagant.
Unless they were mistaken, their son-in-law was a researcher, not a bank robber…
How on earth did he make so much money?
Su Mingyue noticed the confusion in their eyes and quickly explained, “This house wasn’t bought by Brother Xiuyan—it was provided by the state. So don’t worry and just enjoy it.”
“The state? They give out houses like this?” Su Brigade Leader’s eyes nearly popped out of his head.
Su Mingyue shook her head. “Not to just anyone. It’s because Brother Xiuyan’s current research is really important, so he gets benefits like this.”
That finally put their minds at ease.
As long as their son-in-law hadn’t robbed a bank, it was fine.
That night, Su Mingyue didn’t return to her own place. Instead, she stayed and chatted affectionately with Liu Yanyun about everything that had happened recently.
As for Shen Xiuyan, he had already gone back to the research institute to work.
Su Brigade Leader sighed with emotion. “Never thought I’d live in a house like this one day.”
Liu Yanyun teased, “Right? I bet the Su family ancestors’ graves are practically exploding with joy.”
Su Brigade Leader shot back, “Like the Liu family’s aren’t?”
“Same difference.”
The two of them were practically glowing with pride.
Living in a big house, with their daughter close by—who would’ve dared to dream of such a life back in the day?
And to think it had all come so easily. All thanks to their son-in-law—and their daughter.
Su Brigade Leader said proudly, “Still, our daughter’s amazing, huh? Managed to find such a great husband.”
Liu Yanyun beamed as she stroked her daughter’s soft little hand. “Well, who do you think raised her? Our Mingyue is hardworking and virtuous—you couldn’t find another like her even with a lantern. That’s why Xiuyan dotes on her so much.”
Wait a second… soft?
She opened Su Mingyue’s hand and looked down. The calluses and rough patches from years of farm work were completely gone.
Her hands were now pale, tender, and delicate—just looking at them made you want to pamper her.
At first, when she noticed her daughter had gotten fairer, she didn’t think much of it. She just assumed living in the city had been good for her health.
But now even her rough hands had changed? Liu Yanyun couldn’t help but start thinking a bit deeper.
She carefully chose her words. “Sweetheart, who usually does the chores at home?”
Su Mingyue didn’t understand the question, but still answered honestly, “Brother Xiuyan does!”
Su Brigade Leader looked surprised. “Then you cook?”
Su Mingyue shook her head. “We usually eat at school or the institute. On weekends, either Brother Xiuyan takes me out to eat, or he buys groceries and cooks at home.”
Liu Yanyun and Su Brigade Leader exchanged a glance, suddenly feeling a bit uneasy.
Su Brigade Leader asked, his voice trembling, “Then what do you usually do at home?”
“What do I do?” Su Mingyue looked baffled. “I go to school, of course! And I’m super busy every day!”
Su Brigade Leader: “…”
Liu Yanyun: “…”
