by MarineTLChapter 10: The Scumbag CEO’s Pursuit (Part 1)
The sound of running water echoed in her ears as Yu Liuxue opened her eyes, taking in the luxurious hotel room that exuded a nouveau riche aesthetic.
“Host, this time the side character has a rather unique wish.”
Yu Liuxue shifted to a different position, lying on her side with her hand supporting her cheek. Intrigued, she raised an eyebrow, “Oh? How unique? Do tell.”
“The side character hopes you will reject the female lead Lu Wanrong’s divorce request and stand firm in refusing to divorce her.”
This time, Yu Liuxue had taken on the role of scumbag CEO “Fu Yu” in a female-dominant urban novel. The female lead, Lu Wanrong, fell head over heels for Fu Yu at the age of twenty-one when she began an internship at a TV station owned by the Fu family. She remembered Fu Yu that day as dignified and glamorous, surrounded by the admiration of the people at the station, like a high-up princess.
Lu Wanrong came from a poor household. Her mother worked four jobs to pay for her tuition, which left her with various health issues from a young age. Besides that, Lu Wanrong had a troublesome younger sister named Lu Qian, who enjoyed causing trouble and ran with the wrong crowd since middle school. Lu Wanrong had to apologize for her sister’s messes more than once and vowed to break ties with Lu Qian several times, but Lu Qian always ignored her and continued her ways.
Once, Lu Qian angered a local underworld boss, who demanded Lu Wanrong bring ten thousand in cash immediately, or else there would be a blood price for Lu Qian. Back then, Lu Wanrong was a broke intern without savings, and their mother heard about it, rushing to Lu Wanrong’s company in tears, begging Lu Wanrong to save her sister.
Lu Wanrong was distressed. She didn’t even have ten thousand, let alone a hundred.
Their mother wrongly assumed that Lu Wanrong was unwilling to use her savings to save her sister. She made a scene at the company entrance, which caught Fu Yu’s attention. With an aloof demeanor, Fu Yu ordered the security to throw the troublemaker woman out after glancing at the humiliated Lu Wanrong.
Feeling utterly embarrassed, Lu Wanrong quickly apologized to Fu Yu, her voice barely a whisper, “I’m sorry, Miss Fu.”
Fu Yu turned back, raising her delicate brows, “Do you know her?”
A colleague intentionally loud enough for everyone to hear said, “Miss Fu, that’s Lu Wanrong’s mother!”
Lu Wanrong felt her face flush with shame, wishing she could disappear. The surrounding silence made her acutely aware of every heartbeat and the buzzing in her ears, her cheeks burning with embarrassment.
She had never been so mortified in her life.
And it was in front of her crush.
Lu Wanrong expected Fu Yu to look down on her like those at the TV station, to laugh at her, or, worse, avoid her to not catch any bad luck.
Yet, Fu Yu did not do so.
“You urgently need money? I’ll lend it to you.”
Later, a colleague was badmouthing the Wanrong—Fu Yu had given a chilly glance to the colleague, leaving everyone intimidated by her presence. After warning her colleague, Fu Yu had sized up Lu Wanrong with interest, seemingly evaluating something unusual.
After hearing this, the friend curiously asked, “Wanrong, do you and Fu Yu know each other? She’s so aloof and carefree with her attitude, never going out of her way for someone else. If you didn’t know her, why would she defend you like that?”
Wanrong felt confused, “I’ve only met her twice.”
The friend stared, covering her mouth in shock and whispered, “Wanrong, do you think… maybe Fu Yu likes you?!”
What could be more delightful than realizing the person you secretly liked, liked you back? Wanrong’s heart raced as if ready to burst, causing a burst of metaphorical fireworks in her mind as she felt overwhelmed with excitement. She instinctively denied, “Don’t say that, as if it could be true…”
Fu Yu had everything, looks and background, while Wanrong felt inferior, excelling only academically. Her family situation was strained with a sick mother and troublesome sister; they were worlds apart and not even close to the same social level.
Wanrong could never dream of dating the Fu family’s princess.
But Wanrong was the protagonist of a female-dominant urban tale. Her career took off, she became a prominent news anchor, and she married Fu Yu, becoming the envied Mrs. Fu.
Everyone saw Wanrong as living the dream with love and career success, yet only she knew the loneliness of waiting in an empty house every night.
Fu Yu didn’t truly care for her.
Wanrong thought her warmth and understanding could melt Fu Yu’s cold heart over time, but she learned that Fu Yu’s heart was colder and harder than stone. For five long years, Fu Yu garnered headlines with scandals, choosing to stay away instead of returning to the devoted wife awaiting her.
Not even once.
Eventually, both were equals in social standing, Fu Yu a notable CEO, and Wanrong a well-known news anchor. Wanrong believed the situation wasn’t so bad—she still held the title of Fu Yu’s wife, a status no one could strip away.
Then, a few years later, a drunk Fu Yu returned home, barely acknowledging Wanrong before pulling out divorce papers from her bag, expecting Wanrong to sign, “Sign it, and we’re done.”
Perhaps Wanrong once had deep attachments and affection for Fu Yu, but those emotions shattered that night. She didn’t even recall how she shakily signed her name under Fu Yu’s scrutiny. All she knew was how remarkably calm she felt packing to leave the Fu family.
No sadness, no tears. She didn’t shed a single drop.
Perhaps she’d wept all her tears long before.
After the divorce, Wanrong never remarried. Admirers and suitors, including affluent young heirs, influential officials, and even popular stars, couldn’t sway her; she declined all. People gossiped that she couldn’t let go of her scummy ex-wife, but Wanrong knew her true reasons.
Fu Yu’s idealized love had enchanted Wanrong’s heart, only for Fu Yu to cruelly dismantle those enchanting fantasies entirely.
Wanrong no longer dared trust in love.
Years later, the last time they met was at a hotel door where an out-of-control car barreled towards Fu Yu. Instinctively, Wanrong pushed Fu Yu out of harm’s way, seeing surprise and helplessness in Fu Yu’s eyes as they fell.
Blood bloomed under Wanrong, while the hotel’s lights shone brightly, and the ground felt cold, yet Fu Yu’s embrace was warm.
She recalled how Fu Yu hadn’t hugged her like that since their wedding.
After surviving the accident, Wanrong was reborn. This life, she was determined to sever any ties with Fu Yu, avoid heartbreak and tears for love, and lead a genuinely fulfilling life without her.
Thus, Wanrong resolutely sought divorce upon rebirth, unwilling to let anything change her mind.
Yu Liuxue finished reading the synopsis, wiping tears with a tissue. “Love System, did my last mission not meet expectations? Why is this one so emotionally taxing?”
Wanrong was so tragic, Fu Yu was such a scoundrel, and the story was such a dramatic mix but so damn invigorating.
The system, with no expression: “Assessment determined your last mission rating as: S, very successful.”
“So it wasn’t enough to be SSS.”
System: “…” No comment.
“Host, a friendly reminder that Lu Wanrong’s sister, Lu Qian, also reincarnated. She will be the biggest obstacle for this mission.”
Despite being troublesome, Lu Qian cared about Wanrong’s heart, hurt repeatedly by Fu Yu. Destined to separate them, Lu Qian aimed to find Wanrong a better partner. For a remarkable sister like Wanrong, suitors would line up to the next city; Fu Yu wasn’t even worthy of shining her shoes!
Yu Liuxue lay speechless, slumping into the bed, “Love System, you really view my last mission as lacking.”
Ignoring her theatrics, the system activated do-not-disturb mode, returning to its tasks.
The water sounds next door soon stopped, and a beauty with wet hair and wrapped in a towel boldly walked toward Yu Liuxue. Eyes widening, Yu Liuxue quickly asked the system, “Love System, isn’t this inappropriate?”
The system remained unresponsive.
Ning Jiaojiao noticed something unusual about Fu Miss today. Unsure about the gaze she was receiving, she decided to act. Once she succeeded in climbing into Fu Yu’s bed, scripts and endorsements would fall like manna from heaven, securing her spot in the entertainment industry.
With growing anticipation, Ning Jiaojiao approached softly, “Miss Fu, sorry to keep you waiting.”
Ning Jiaojiao naturally moved to sit on Yu Liuxue’s lap, while Yu Liuxue internally chanted, “I can’t, I shouldn’t!”
Avoiding her gaze, she gingerly pushed Ning Jiaojiao away, “Miss Ning, please have some respect.”
Ning Jiaojiao ignited Lu Wanrong’s misery, causing distress and turmoil. To complete the mission, Yu Liuxue wished to maintain distance from this vixen.
Panicked, Ning Jiaojiao leaned back in, caring little for her exposed chest, her eyes reddening as she clung to Yu Liuxue, “Miss Fu, are you already tired of Jiaojiao?”
“That’s not it.”
Ning Jiaojiao felt pleased, her beauty still as captivating as ever. Fu Yu had eventually succumbed to her charms.
Her happiness, however, didn’t last.
Fu Yu, the epitome of a gentleman, explained, “Wanrong is waiting for me at home for dinner. Miss Ning, rest early, and if you fancy any bags, visit Fu’s building and take your pick using my name.”
Ning Jiaojiao’s smile froze, who wanted some bag?
One Fu Yu outweighed hundreds of bag-sales buildings.
Hearing Wanrong’s name, Ning Jiaojiao dismissed it. The circle said Fu Yu and Wanrong were distant, that their marriage was out of novelty. Wu Yu spending her wedding night drinking at a bar was common knowledge, not worth gossiping about; Ning Jiaojiao wasn’t worried.
Cloying and relentless, Yu Liuxue suffered Ning Jiaojiao’s antics until blessedly, a call interrupted. Excitedly answering by the window, Yu Liuxue gestured silence to Ning Jiaojiao, speaking tenderly into the phone, “Wanrong, I’m sorting out something at the office, and I’ll come home right after.”
Wanrong’s heart felt desolate, bitterly laughing as she heard Fu Yu’s gentle voice she’d dreamt of hearing alive.
Steeling herself, she calmly said, “There’s no need, Miss Fu. I called to discuss our divorce.”
“Divorce?” Yu Liuxue frowned, “I don’t agree.”
Ning Jiaojiao’s eyes sparkled, voicing lightly with delicacy, balancing the act skillfully to mislead Wanrong while pleasing Fu Yu, “Miss Fu, where did you throw my clothes?”
Yu Liuxue: “…!”
You wicked supporting character!
Panicking, she cradled the phone, “Wanrong, that wasn’t me, I didn’t! It’s not what you think, please listen to me!”
