Life Goes On C37

Chapter 37
“I don’t care! I’m not some cursed fate, and I want to be on the Hukou! Third Aunt’s house has so many children and they’re all on the Hukou. Eldest Aunt’s daughters all have Hukou too. I’m the only undocumented one!”
“You’re comparing yourself to Third Aunt’s family? Fine, let’s compare. Go look at how obedient Third Aunt’s daughters are, and then look at yourself. Last time I went to your Eldest Aunt’s house to see you and your younger sister, what did you do? You stayed outside all day and refused to come back. You think I don’t know what you were thinking?”
Chang Fang felt a sting in her heart.
“Now you’re saying you have a good fate just to say we’ve wronged you. Think about it yourself, we raised you this big, how exactly have we wronged you?”
The more Chang Fang’s mother spoke, the more aggrieved and upset she felt: “When you were born, your father and grandmother saw you were a girl and wouldn’t even cook for me. I couldn’t even get out of bed. I had to breastfeed you on an empty stomach. Your grandmother found a Bazi Master to read your fortune, and he said your fate would curse any younger brothers. Your grandmother wanted to give you away right then. If I hadn’t stopped her, you would have been taken away long ago.”
If this had been before, Chang Fang would have been devastated. This wasn’t the first time she had heard this story, and every time she heard it in the past, she felt terribly sad, feeling as though she owed her mother.
“I know, you blame me for sending you to your Eldest Aunt’s house. But at that time, what choice did I have? If you didn’t leave, how could I have given birth to your younger brother?”
Chang Fang’s mother grew more indignant as she spoke, feeling that her daughter was ungrateful and that she had suffered so much for her over the years, only for Chang Fang to cause her more trouble.
Before coming here, Chang Fang had imagined what her mother and father would say, and what her grandmother would say.
But she hadn’t expected that they wouldn’t even look at the paper in her hand, nor would they care about her having a good fate.
That familiar feeling of misery was about to surge up, but in just a few moments, she looked at the paper and thought of her own destiny again.
The concept of having a “good fate” seemed to possess an incredibly powerful force. This power was injected into her precisely because the adults had constantly brainwashed her with the idea of having a “bad fate” in the past.
Even though her fate had changed, everyone still didn’t take her seriously. Chang Fang instinctively refused to dwell on their reactions.
She clung desperately to the fact that her fate was good. She had come into this world, and heaven had arranged a life for her.
As long as she thought this way, all the pain was blocked out, and her heart would fill with joy and anger.
The joy was because her fate was good and she hadn’t cursed anyone.
The anger was at everyone’s attitude. With such a good fate, they still treated her poorly.
Chang Fang looked at her mother. Her mother seemed to attribute all her unhappiness to the fact that Chang Fang was a daughter.
But Chang Fang felt this was wrong.
It was clearly everyone else’s fault! If they hadn’t gotten her fate wrong from the start, if they hadn’t hated her just because she was a girl, but instead knew she had a good fate and would grow up to be wealthy and successful, they would have loved her.
Then no one would be sad!
Grandmother was sighing now because she didn’t have a grandson, but that was Grandmother’s own problem. Who told her not to like her own granddaughter? If she just changed and liked her granddaughters, she had so many that it would be enough to keep her happy for a long time.
Mother cried every day, but that was simply because she didn’t like her. If she changed herself, she wouldn’t have to cry all the time.
Father had a bad temper every day, looking like he had never been happy in his life. It was the same for him!
And she… Chang Fang’s mind felt like it was being hit by an electric current at that moment, gaining a brand new understanding of everything.
In the past, she always felt so miserable she wanted to kill herself because she didn’t like herself!
Her mother and the others wouldn’t change, so she would change herself.
The first step was the Hukou!
In the past, whenever Chang Fang’s mother spoke of the circumstances of her birth, Chang Fang would become obedient.
But not today.
Today, Chang Fang was going to make things difficult for them, just as she had been made to feel difficult all these years.
“You’re sad because you don’t like me. As long as you like me, all the problems will vanish.” Therefore, this was all their own problem and had nothing to do with her.
Chang Fang’s mother thought she had gone mad and was talking nonsense.
The more Chang Fang thought about it, the more she felt this was the truth. Everyone else was wrong; they had been wrong from the very beginning! And yet she was the one enduring it all.
No! No! She had to get something!
The Hukou! Yes, get on the Hukou!
Thus, when Yun Song arrived, Huanhuan was crying and Chang Fang was demanding her Hukou.
Chang Fang’s mother, heavily pregnant, was shaking with rage. She felt her anger had reached its limit.
If this brat hadn’t been a girl, why would she have had to suffer for so many years! If it wasn’t for that fate of hers, how could the second child have also been a girl!
But then she saw the police, so she said, “You want a Hukou? Go ask your mother for it. I’m not your mother.”
Yun Song and the other two were in perfect sync.
Tong Jin, the most lively and youngest, quickly pulled Chang Fang up. The tall and serious Tang Chao took charge of dispersing the onlookers who had gathered to watch the commotion.
Yun Song, who had the best temper and a medical background, took charge of the agitated pregnant woman.
Yun Song helped her inside to sit down. While supporting her, she checked her pulse and felt relieved to find nothing wrong.
Seeing the police, Chang Fang’s mother felt a mountain of grievances, but for now, she could only say, “To tell you the truth, this child belongs to my eldest sister. Because of some circumstances back then, we couldn’t say she was my sister’s, so we’ve always told the child I was the one who gave birth to her. That’s why she keeps coming to find me now.”
Yun Song looked at her sincere gaze, her helpless yet natural tone, and her heart-to-heart explanation.
Yun Song almost doubted herself. Had she gotten it wrong?
No, that wasn’t right. In this kind of situation, no matter how foolish a child was or how clever the surrounding adults were, it was impossible to truly make a child mistake their own parents.
But the woman simply refused to admit it, and the villagers likely wouldn’t testify against her either.
Chang Fang’s mother had only one thought now: she had to give birth to the child in her belly safely.
Chang Fang was this big now, an adult; the police couldn’t do anything to her. So she wasn’t afraid.
If Jin Hui, Chang Fang’s mother, would have shed tears when mentioning this daughter when she was small, hoping to quickly have a son so she could bring her daughter back, those feelings were gone now. After so many years, and especially after finally getting pregnant again only to have her daughter suddenly return to cause trouble, the last shred of guilt she felt for her daughter’s absence had vanished completely.
Yun Song looked at her; there was no hesitation or sadness on the woman’s face.
Yun Song could not understand it, so she simply said, “Take care of your health. I am going to check on Chang Fang.”
Under Tong Jin’s comfort, the girl’s emotions had finally stabilized.
Tong Jin had calmed her with a single sentence: “Don’t be afraid. I am a police officer, and we will definitely protect you.”
Chang Fang stopped crying instantly. She looked at the officer before her, feeling as though the entire world had become strange and turned upside down.
In the past, she had always believed the police would come to arrest people like her. Now, she was suddenly being told that the police weren’t there to catch her, but to protect her?
Protect her? How would they protect her?
When Yun Song came out, she looked at the two sisters, Chang Fang and Huanhuan. She was pondering the same question.
“Forget it, let’s take the two girls back to town first, then find a solution.” Even for the police, this matter remained difficult to handle. Yun Song decided that the first step was to bring them to town.
Since the three of them were stationed in Tonglin Town long-term, they had been allocated three student dormitory rooms at the school, even though there was no official police station yet.
The one thing a student dormitory never lacked was beds.
Chang Fang’s mother insisted that these two children were not hers, but she was actually eavesdropping from inside. Seeing the police taking them away, she came out and asked, “Officer, where are you taking them?”
Yun Song replied, “Your family refuses to admit these are your children, and both her Eldest Aunt and Second Aunt say they didn’t give birth to them either. Given the situation, we have no choice but to take them to town first and wait for the results of the investigation.”
Yun Song handled it this way because she wanted the Zhang family to calm down and think clearly about what they intended to do.
